Anyway, all was going swimmingly until i arrived at white forest. A lot of Dr Vance's dialogue simply failed to play. It seemed random and didn't affect anyone else, except when Alex gave him the message from G-man. I got the gist of the dialogue in these scenes but not it all. Can anyone give me a brief rundown of what happens, what Alex says and what Eli's responses are?

SHE IS T3H SUC!" Again, like it or gtfo. Most players enjoy having her around, and she's more of a help than a drag if you actually pay attention.

To answer your question, you can find the scenes on YouTube. I'm too lazy to look, but search for "White Forest" and you should find it. I know there's video of the G-Man and the ending (and of the rocket launch), I think there's a video of the tea time scene.

Magnusson was the new character. You did play HL2/Episode 1, right?

His post was well-worded. Also, don't say moar, it degrades... pretty much everything. Alyx is a weird spelling, and it's pronounced the same, it doesn't bother me when people call her Alyx (as long as they don't call Gordon "Gordan"...).

There's a fairly common bug- sorry for not mentioning this earlier, I just remembered it- where people are missing some/all of their voice samples. IIRC, it can be solved by switching the language of the game to something else, restarting the game, switching back to English, and then restarting again, but I'm not 100% on that. Don't say pls, or kthx. And don't accuse people of pirating games with no basis.

Is kind of weird that it's just the one character, but I could see Steam skipping a few files when downloading the game. It wouldn't be that implausible.

If Alyx actually was a human, she'd still piss me off after a while. This isn't even an issue of writing anymore, it's an issue of "oh my god shut up PLEASE I AM TRYING TO SHOOT THINGS."

I don't think it's as bad as some people make it out to be, but it gets kind of grating when she congratulates you about everything.

I too believe that Alyx was "realistic" and life-like.

Well, fair enough But that does touch on my point, though - there's so much Alyx dialogue, after every fight, after every discovery, that I find myself wishing she wasn't there, that I could accomplish things on my own. It's not that she isn't a believable character, or an annoyance AI-wise, because she really is the best AI sidekick in any videogame, ever.

If anything, it would be less 'epic' because you're just running the hell away, not trying to do damage.

Without Alyx, you'd still be travelling to the same location, with the exposition needed to get you there delivered differently.
