backing up hl2 files if i format

was just wondering .. if i can back up the hl-2 files from steam to format my pc so iv got a nice fresh copy of windows for when hl-2 comes out will it still work ?

Yup. Look for the GFC files in your steam folder and burn these to CD. Also, make a note in notepad of thier locations and add that to your backups. Format your PC and once you have windows running and steam installed, copy all the GFC's into the appropriate location. If steam dosen't pick them up automatically, right click on your games and hit install, should see them then.

Because not everyone has fast internet connections and/or lives in countrys where international (read: american) bandwidth is unlimited/cheap.

So it's much cheaper/faster to download it once and back it up than it is to repeatedly download it.

Yes. Even if you yourself don't particularly mind downloading it again, it does create needless internet traffic (generally not a big deal unless there's a crisis going on) and it can cost Valve extra money in bandwidth usage.

Question: What are the HL2 GCF file names?

I live in New Zealand and I only get 10 gb of international bandwidth per month, and since this game is like 2 gigs, I would rather download it off a national site if I can (get 100 gbs of national/month). I know a file-share place that only allows NZ users, however it's kind of impossible to search for the HL2 GCF files without knowing their names.

Can anyone help me out here?

I may need to redownload the package, MAYBE, once or twice over the next few years. And, as I said, if that is the case I can do it easily overnight.

(and as for creating needless internet traffic, it really is just a drop in the bucket you know. I can download at 400k/s 24/7 and its not going to effect anyone)

Totally. About an 8 gig partition is all you need for XP,. which makes it easy to format and reinstall without losing any of your other data.

A Partition

Might as well explain.

A partition is a part of your hard disk that u create.
You can set it to any amount of space you want, so lets say you have a 40 gig disk, you could set it up to have C: have 20gigs and the second one asuming it would be named D: to 20gigs
So you basicly split your hard disk in 2.

You can then install windows on your c: and keep all gaming and drivers or what ever on your other partition.

If you need to format computer, all you need to format is your C: partition wich has windows on, the D: partition is not formated and left there with all your mp3's hl2 cs:s stuff.
So you dont have to redownload the entire thing again.
