Backing up only the steam no-cd updates?

Have done some extensive searching both here and on the greater regions of the internet and haven't found an answer for this...

I want to backup the steam no-cd update by itself, without resorting to burning 5 CD's worth of data.

I'm on 56k and I am planning to wipe my HD soon, and I don't fancy re-downloading steamware for 2 hrs just to get HL2 running again. But I am also too stingy to waste 5 CD's to burn the entire thing (which would make my original HL2 redundant anyway)

So is the steam no-cd update a seperate .gcf file? I've tried looking for it but to no avail.

Thanks for your help (or your flames)
:cat:

btw I am only talking about the legit steam no-cd update. I'm a legit HL2 owner and I'm not interested in any "third party" no-cd patches

you don't need to back up a no-cd update. if you back up all your gcf files you won't need a cd.

i'm not 100% clear on what you want to achieve.

thank you for the quick reply GSW.

I think what I'm trying to do can't be done...

So I'll take your advice :)

Mate, I'll send you the freakin' CDs. At less than 10p a disc, I can't see the harm in burning the whole thing to disc, tbh.

czrsink,

thank you for the kind gesture!

see, i'm a poor uni student :)

my freind and I have recently been busking on the street in order to raise funds for a few CD's for me :D hehe

I really was also asking the question originally just to see if had been or could be done.. thanks anyway for your trouble

I remember reading a while back that it didn't work

it's probably like most other Steam features - it only works every other tuesday and only when that tuesday happens to be a full moon, and only if Steam isn't currently at the end of it's menstrual cycle.
