beat the game -- wondering if I missed things

i finally beat the game last night, very satisfying when i was tempted at times to use cheat codes. now, i look forward to the cheats and messing with the npc codes, and of course playing deathmatch more.

i have a big question, after seeing all of the screenshots and various videos before the game came out, I'm wondering if I missed anything...either somehow skipped scenes or I was in a trance playing and don't remember.

example online screenshots:
strider breaking through wall in lab?
combines detaining citizens on street?
alien skewering some guy?

were these from demos that never made it to the final version? i'm confused. either way, awesome game.

Sadly, that stuff circa E3 2003 was all just "proof of concept" work. Stuff to show off the features of the game to the industry, and a way of proving that it was all possible to the developer. Those scenes were sometimes reworked into the game (The settings for all of those shots are in there in some form), but the actual action may have changed. The Hydra (Blue tentacle) was cut when it's AI wasn't up to scratch. Moreover, it wasn't particuarly fun to fight against. Cool to look at when it was stabbing other people, but just a blue blob that came towards your screen and caused instant death if you were actually fighting it yourself.
 
none of that was left in the game, you havent missed anything.
 
Striders still skewer people, if you watch them long enough in the first area (after crossing the sky bridge).
 
wasnt there supposed to be an OICW weapon? probably turned into the Pulse rifle or some other weapon, but some of the screenshots iv seen showed one, and www.planethalflife.com showed off an OICW
early screen shots also showed the civilians with MP5Ks, now they are MP7s

I play the game and thinking when all thing I have seen in different screenshots shall come, but they newer come. Wary bad filing when the game was ended. I feel like I was cheated in sum way, like you buy sum sing but you have only the half of what they promise. :(

I added sum more screenshots I have seen. I think that was planning for many more scenes in the game, but never used it.

Demonstraions are not equivilant to actual gameplay shots...

They were dubbed demos for that specific reason.. they were demonstrating the engine they were working on.

Designing a game is an ongoing process, ideas and thigns change as they work out gameplay and storyline.
 
No, you didn't miss anything. Lots of things from early screenshots and videos never made it into the final product.
 
A lot of these are just early versions of levels already in the final game, or ones made specifically for demos.
 
Actualy, alot of the stuff cut from the game still has the logic left behind in the final release. The only things missing are implementation in maps and, ofcourse, the media.
 
Valve pissed me off how they scrapped all that good stuff from E3.
 
Well, if it was stuff like the hydra i dont care. To get a look at what mabye the hydra might have been like make a blank cube map, put a strider in it, in it's 'flags' check "can stomp player" put a playerstart underneath it and an rpg and ammo crate. Play, keep underneath it at all times.

It's that orange level that was shown in a few screenshots before the game was released. Do you think it was supposed to be something cool? I think it's just Nova Prospekt without proper textures

yeah it could be just an unfinished level...
if there would be such level with all that orange it would realy hurt my eyes :afro:
 
But then again, why would Valve have released a screenshot of an unfinished map?

Maybe Nova Prospekt was going to be orange, but they realised that it in fact would hurt everyone's eyes, and changed the colour

THIS IS AN OBVIOUS CONSPIRACY!
 
God, I was so disappointed when I saw those traps in Ravenholm that had been taken out (the swinging log, the falling dumpster thing.) I figured I'd just missed them the first time around, but no, they're gone. Just the car cranes, gas and ignitors, and spinny blades, as I recall. Nothing that required too much thought (again unless I missed something hidden and clever.)

valves new idea of map designing was you make all the solids first, using the orange textures, and THEN you texture your map

have you checked out the orange textures? they real decent. tell you about player height, for doors, ceiling height etc. for vents too. it also has a cut-out view (black on orange) to help with stairs, and tells u proper height units.

remember back in the old days, when we had to go through trial and error on finding min door height and min crouch height for vents? and player width and all.

That map is in the game, like you said, Nova Prospekt. Just untextured.
 
Shame that the Citadel never "eats it's way through the city"... HL2 could have used a sense of danger and urgency...

Erm it did, it pulled down buildings and blocked off routes to the citadel all over the city.

I think in the trailer, people took it for granted.
 
Coul've been a helluva lot cooler than the limited 'blocking' off routes..
 
^i'l give you a reasonm why the citadel walls never crushed buildings, try to make a sequence like this in hammer.
