I have had my first piece of work published somewhere other than fansites/blogs/uni papers!

I have started working for 411 Mania in their Games section and I have reviewed Viva Pinata (PC) :D

You can read the review here

:D

p.s new blog see sig :p

Hey congratz! And, I lol'd at the comment about candy popping out of their heads!

Way more impressive than my first published piece... a poem in Yankee Magazine (not sure who all knows what that even is)... and.. I was 9. It wasn't a good poem. At all.

You're chris evans?

Not a bad review, though there's a surprising number of grammatical errors in there for a published work. :p

Was there :O

The editor of the games section said it was fine :O

And yes i've heard all the Chris Evans jokes before :D

A lot of them. Commas instead of semicolons, incorrect placement of apostrophes in plurals and possessives... very simple, elementary stuff. It is easy to miss, though; I'm guilty of completely butchering the language in some of my articles, though in all instances I've gone back and fixed them all.

Ah that kinda stuff...yeah I often make errors with that stuff =/

Need English lessons again :p

It's for PC too, I'm so not reading a article that's wrong that early on.

Then how did you ever get a job as a writer? :p
Jealousy is a horrible thing!

Well done Chris, not a game I would buy I'm afraid, but your review goes some way to trying to convince me. Best of luck your work over there :)

Hey, good for you Evo! Query: did you get paid for this?

That wasn't my choice, something about the setup they have on 411 meant it had to say that at the top, but the review itself is on the PC version

Cheers Glenn :)

Nah, I wish! That is a goal of mine, to get paid for doing an article or something :D

Jeez. Why the hate in this thread? D:

Congratz Evo! One has to be very brave to go into the world of journalism and reviewing things so I respect you greatly.

I once got a picture I drew when I was 5 put into the local paper and I won a T shirt and a pen. It was awesome.

Thats great man.

But be honest did you actually like having to play the game? I always read about the amount of shit games reviewers have to play for reviews.

Well done! I'd hug you, but I don't really know you, and since June last year I'm not allowed to touch strangers... D:

you don't get paid so it doesnt count. :) j/k man, congrats! hope you have fun. some critique: bad grammar and writing. reviews is the only area where i value really good writing. it was abit all over the place, it felt completely impersonal and uninteresting. read up on the grammar, good writing (google), make it your own. a good review is a personal, interesting and visual review. just keep it up, you'll improve in no time mate. cheers :)

I got an article published in some Norwegian psychology journal

The journal is Psykologisk Tidsskrift, 02, 2007. I'm gonna go look for an e-journal version.

Good work, keep it up.

If I was to critique I'd say the writing doesn't have enough flare. You need to personalize it and you need me to enjoy reading it. It's currently pretty stale; too much “There is this, there is that; game does this good, games does that bad. I enjoyed this, I enjoyed that”. It needs to be more personal and cohesive, and most importantly floooow. Then you're onto a winner.

Well in this gig I am just reviewing what I want, the main part of my job is going to be a weekly PC focused news roundup article

Good work, keep it up.

Yeah I generally do try and get some more flair and flow into it, but for a first review for a new site to work on I thought i'd just go for a simple review without going wayyyy overboard. And as they like everything to be broken down in Gameplay/Graphics/Fun etc. it ain't that easy to flow it all together =/

Just to note - I don't consider myself a games journalist or anything, at the moment I am just a normal guy doing some writings. I won't consider myself anything like a games journalist unless I get a job/career out of this.

Congratulations! That's awesome. I'd love to be published one day.

Sah-weet. The article could be improved as others noted, but still dude, I'm pretty happy for you. Despite the fact that I don't know you.

Ignore the haters; there will always be people jealous of your success. Success requires no apologies, failure permits no alibis.

I'm on my way to my first major "publication" myself; took 7 years, but it defies what nearly every single competitor has ever told me.

According to Alexander Pope:

't is hard to say, if greater want of skill
Appear in writing or in judging ill;
But, of the two, less dang'rous is th'offence.
To tire our patience, than to mislead our sense.

Basically he's laying the 17th century smackdown on reviewers.
