In one of my college classes we had to do a project involving public opinion. One of my classmates did a project on the best video games of all time and their influences on peoples lives. In his survey of 120 people, final fantasy 7 had the most votes with a total of 42 (half-life 1 was 3rd with 21 votes). Someone else in the class brought it up that gamespot did a huge poll on this subject and ff7 won that aswell.

I have never played this game. I was wondering is the game that good where it would be worth dealing with the crappy graphics and and playing it now?

The Final Fantasy games are indeed teh pwn. Just like the original Command & Conquer.
/me pinks away nostalgia tear ;(

FF7 is amazing, easily the best RPG ever IMO, but not the best game. That honor goes to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

FF7 was the only... ONLY... RPG I have ever played and beat in one sitting.

God, It was so absorbing... You really felt for the characters.

It was great at the time, so was 8. The graphics shouldn't be too bad since the backgrounds a pre-rendered. Go with 8+ if you're looking for nicer graphics.

The only game that really had a real influence on me and my way of thinking is mgs and especially mgs2.

The one game that truly touched me and made me feel really immersed the most was Beyond Good & Evil. And then you've HL2.

Impossible to say with any certainty. Way too many that have had a profound effect on gaming and life in general.

Same, I loved the philosophies and stuff from them.

Man, Metal GEar SOlid was soooo emotional.

Fallout 2, replayed it to death. Next would be Deus Ex, one of the best FPS/RPG I've ever played.

Ocarina of Time, easily.

2nd best game ever? that would be harder to choose for me.

Grim Fandango? System Shock 2? Operation Flashpoint? Deus Ex? Half-Life?

Hard choice.

Original DOOM is the best game everw. NOW CLOSE THIS THREAD.

next to that is DOOM 2

Lol I think I chose the wrong title for this thread. Seems most of you took it as I was asking you what the best game ever was. I was simply asking if FF7 was that good where it warranted dealing with the crummy graphics.

Most PS1 games will have crappy graphics, but the game's story and characters is where it shines.

Good god, Why are you still here?
Go and buy the damned game!

A friend gave me their pc version of the game. They were getting rid of alot of old games and some consoles to save space.

Ill start playing it tonite, thanks for the input.

As far as the best game ever goes, my favorite is MGS 1. However, its purely opinionated and theres no way one game should get such an award. It would be like trying to figure out what the best movie of all time is.

System Shock 2.
Very close behind that is Deus Ex and Half-Life.
Then Far Cry and HL2.

I've watched my friend play it near the end, looked very boring and it was annoying him as well. Best game ever=Half-Life2+Mods

Half-Life is the best game I've ever played.

I can't stand the final fantasy games. I don't like the gameplay or stories, only played 7 and 8 though.

If I had to pick, it would be Ocarina of Time. I still find it fun to play every now and then. The only other game I have played that much is morrowind and I think this is due more to the sheer size of it.

No games I can think of have had an effect on my thinking or emotionally however, the ocean hotel in vampire bloodlines did scare the crap out of me. Something about creepy little girls in places they shouldn't be gets me every time :(

Counter-Strike? If we can combined that and source since source was pretty much a gfx patch...then

that's a game i've been playing constantly for 8 years.

Yeah that level was really well done. But i thought what i played of The Shalebridge Cradle in Thief 3 was far scarier, if not the scariest level in gaming history. Flickering lights ftl :o  ;( :x

The Body level in SS2 though..........f*ck.......That was terrifying

For me it's Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, hell I'd even say it's the greatest series of all time as well.

Hell, even the critics agree....http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/simpleratings.asp?rankings=y

EDIT: Wow Metroid Prime is on there as well, then again Metroid Prime > Halo (my point is...Metroid and Samus pwnzors)

Meh, I still believe that Ocarina of Time is way too overrated.
Majora's Mask doesn't get the recognition it deserves. :|

Whilst Final Fantasy VII has probably the best story for a piece of electronic software, to call it a "game" is an absolute insult to public intelligence. I get the exact same tense menu-selection action from browsing my start menu.

The Final Fantasy cultural phenomenon is a strange one, perhaps even a dangerous one. It's reflective of a culture in which reading a book is simply too square (no pun intended). Instead people pick up a Final Fantasy game and honestly believe that it is something more than a mediocre fantasy tale about a S&M maniac and his schizophrenic sex-slave. Or a wet-sponge of a guy who's inwardly tormented by the fact that his dad is a f***ing whale.

Dr. Thorpe: But now people who were raised on nothing but Nintendo think the Final Fantasy games had objectively great plots and great music because they're never actually read a book or bought a record.

Zack: If someone tells me how moving the opera music was in Final Fantasy VI then I pretty much instantly discount their opinion on everything. It's like finding out a guy secretly believes the holocaust was a lie. Their horrible judgment in one area taints everything else they say and do.

Dr. Thorpe: Yeah, and the people who cry when Final Fantasy characters die? Imagine sitting them down in front of a Keats poem or something, it would probably kill them.

Zack: Only if it was being read by a girl with giant hair and they had to push the X button at the end of each stanza.
Too true, too true :)

My opinion: Half-Life 2 is "teh best game evar". Sure, it's an unispired choice considering the forum, but it is simply far more fun than i've ever had with any game before. You play the game, the game doesn't play you. Close second is System Shock II.
