I think we can all agree that the new smoke grenades in CS:S really kick a$$. Imagine the type of gameplay that the source engine is going to allow using not only the new physics system, but also the particle system.

Imagine setting fire to car tires and having the air fill with thick, acrid, black smoke. Now imagine chucking that flaming tire into a hallway or other confined area and have it just enveloped in thick, black smoke.

There are so many possibilities like this that are going to change the way we play games when mod developers start to use the Source engine to build new games. Since HL1 was built on a modified Quake 2 engine, i'm really looking forward to see what Source can bring to the table.

We, as gamers, are just going to benefit by Valvue putting out a great engine. Raising the bar indeed.

4 days til we find out how great HL2 really is. I'm really curious to see how it turned out after 6 years of development.

I was messing with hammer this morning and made a physicly simulated door with wooden boards nailed to the other side, that the player could force open by repeatedly running at it, and using there momentum to smash it open, it was pretty awsome, the engine is like this awsome box of forces and physical items, to create any crazy contraption.

If half-life 2 itself doesnt push the full power of source, then we are gonna be seeing some awsome and varied mods.

There's plenty of burning tyres in Palestine right now.

That's actually what made me think of it. I was watching the news last night and obviously have too much HL2 on the brain.

Heh, I can only imagine what that would be like...

Just as long as the comercial's Theme song wasn't the background music. I think I would Vomit.

Not to want to be pedantic, but wasn't HL on the Quake 1 engine?

Found this quote:

"It is fundamentally just a heavily modified Quake 1 engine. There are about 50 lines of code from the Quake 2 engine, mostly bugs fixes to hard problems that Carmack found and fixed before we ran into them."

Here's the complete article explaining the details of the HL1 engine:

It's built on the Quake engine, and HL2 is (physics wise) built on a Havok engine.

They just modified it.

my theory: they made their engine and put havoc in it, then modified the whole bunch and added stuff.

I don't think havoc will be the botom brick, its not THAT improtant.

i could be wrong tho

This will not be possible, it's the same as the water. You can't put some water in a barrel and shoot the barrel so that the water flows out. The physics engine is damn good, but they weren't able to simulate that without making all computers unable to run it in a game like HL2.

I think he was talking more about like... being able to move a smoke grenade, and the trail following it. Just applying the effect to a tire.

Unless I'm Mistaken...

No, I think it would be possible. Just have the particles stop when they hit a confining space, like a wall. I think that's how smoke grenades work in source (though I haven't bothered to play it since the beta, since source is rubbish).

Yeah - i was referring to how the smoke grenades act in CS:S.

Eon - i'm kinda confused by your "source is rubbish" comment. Were you being sarcastic? (sorry, can't smell sarcasm on the Internet).
