Can You Tell a Fake Smile From a Real One?

12/20. I found that the fake smilers have dead dead eyes, and there cheeks pull too much.
 
What the hell is wrong with the third guy? AND number 13. WTF?

There's also usually a kind of jerk in the neck when the person has a real smile.

Yeah but in real life it's different. You're not having people in the same backdrop smiling and then stopping. Things are more dynamic and in motion. Lots of sounds, lots of images going on in your peripheral. You may not be studying their face to determine if it's a fake smile or not.

To be a true test, these elements need to be introduced and the test done in an environment that mimics social interactions more realistically.
 
I was rubbish at this. I just started guessing. I rely on eye contact more than what the eyes themselves look like :/

It's mostly the eyes and the giggle afterwards. A laugh or smile usually doesn't end right away, it more "winds down" if you will.

I blame this on the fact that after the first vote, I would pick "fake" or "genuine" without actually reading the button labels, and after the sixth video I think I forgot which side each option was on and voted anyway. Whoops! :D
 
17 for me. It was pretty easy if you look at the way the rest of their body moves, and their eyes. Some of them were even laughing and their shoulders moved up and down which is a give away.

sinkoman, if you read what everyone else got, that statement is obviously proven untrue. Yeah, "most people are surprisingly bad at spotting fake smiles"... that's why nearly everyone here got above 15 out of 20. Unless the people that go to helplife2.net are somehow special? Maybe we are a new breed, and will soon kill off the weaker, less intelligent beings.
 
Generally I find that this forum attracts people who are more intelligent than the average person. So it follows that a lot of us would score above average in this sort of thing.

Because whenever I went to hit the play button, it glitched out, and didn't play anything, and I couldn't ACTUALLY play it. The funny thing, all of the ones I missed did that. O_o

By using EMG and setting up conditions in which a subject makes a real smile and then a fake one, yes, you can tell the difference.
