I forgot to post this earlier in the day (well, earlier in my day) but:

Have you ever not been able to get to sleep at night? It's a horrible feeling. You're lying there, tossing and turning, and you can't go to sleep. My eyes fealt like lead, they hurt if you close them and they hurt if you opened them. Every light source - no matter how minor - was like a solar flare, burning at the inside of my eyelids. My bed seemed too warm, then too cold, then too warm again. Possibly the worst part was trying to stop thinking about things. I'd think about school. Then about Vampire: the Masquerade (any little bit of info I dredged up, which is not really conductive to a good sleeping environment). Then about people I knew. Eventually i started counting, but that morphed into Vampire again somehow. Eventually I fell asleep at around 3am and woke up at 10am. Oh wells, 7 hours sleep is better than nothing

So.

Don't you hate it when you can't sleep?

Usually takes me 30 minutes on a good night. About a third of the time though, I can't sleep for like 2-3 hours and yea, it's horrible :x

Lately though I've been able to get to sleep really fast, I just have to stay up until 3AM-4AM on the computer and I'm good :P

Yep, takes me about 30minutes on a good night to go to sleep.

I hate it when you can't, it is like you describe, you just think about so many things.

I hate those nights where you have like 10 dreams that all link to each other in some random way, their funny dreams but when you wake up you just can't stop thinking about them of figure out the meaning. All dreams have a meaning, right?

"All dreams have a meaning, right?"

No.

Copious amounts of cannabis seems to do the trick when you can't sleep but be warned. If you start levitating in your dreams this may transfer it's self into real life. At first you will be able to levitate a few mil off the ground and as time goes on you will be able to levitate higher and higher untill you lose control and float off into space.

*Disclaimer*

Smoking is bad....k?

Wow, in my own bed it rarely takes me longer than 5 mins to fall asleep.
The only time I take a while to sleep, is in the middle of summer when it is really hot and uncomfortable.
When it gets cold I fall asleep even quicker, dont know why.

About half of the time it takes me 2 to 3 hrs to get to sleep and it's very irritating. The same thing happens to me too, I start thinking about different stuff and lately my eyes hurt when I try to shut my eye lids. You slept for 7 hrs eh? Well, the worst I've ever donw is just 2 hrs and you can imagen how refreshed I felt the next day:sleep: .

Well then I guess I should've been killed by a The Thing like creature by now:P .

I've fallen off alot of cliffs and trees, wake up before I hit the ground and my legs kick up in the air.

So the meaning is, stay away from trees and cliffs. :|

I used to have problems getting to sleep but it is no longer a problem.

I dunno what happened but I find it much easier to just drift off...

My advice is to listen to some slow tunes.

Helps me alot.

Mmmm. The problem has escalated since I broke my CD Player.

I've had trouble getting to sleep for years.

Playing video games immediately before going to sleep can be a bad idea - or anything that gets your mind racing. Try chilling out for 30 mins before bed time, or having a hot bath - it makes the world of difference. Coffee/tea is an obvious no no.

There's one other trick that works quite well - try watching episode 1, series 1 of BSG - the one where the Cylons are attacking every 37 mins and everyone has been up for days. They all look so exhausted it makes me feel tired thinking about it (this has worked 2 or 3 times)

That was the case when I started smoking. 15 years later and a joint would keep me up all night ... this was one of the reasons I packed it in.

Its been too hot to get to sleep the last few days. I need to re-position my fan closer. Also, the time I do start getting tired is when the birds come out and it starts getting light outside.

Don't fight it. I usually use the time before sleep to think about stuff. If I don't fall asleep then I get more thinking time, win win either way

Just try to not think. I know it sounds impossible, but just relax and think of nothing.

I had insomnia for a year which wasn't pleasant. Then one day it just went away. *shrug*

Not sleeping is hell though.

Well I guess if it takes you less then 15 minutes to fall asleep your not getting enough sleep each night. BUt in your case Id say its the complete oposite, but your still not getting 8 hours a night hmmm weird.

I have mild insomnia, to an extent. The secret is to stay up reeeally late, until you're dead tired, and then just collapse into bed. This only works when it's summer and you're unemployed, though.

It used to take me 3 hours to fall asleep and this was one of the few things that worked (counting jumping sheep never worked..). Unfortunately I sometimes got to the point where I would start thinking about sleeping, and how you lose consciousness, and then I'd start wondering how your mind knows when to wake itself up, and get this paranoia that I"d never wake up again. Not a good way to fall asleep.

Now I fall asleep almost instantly, but that's because I'm constantly running on less than 6 hours of sleep (sometimes 4). Then I'll sleep til 2 pm on weekends, and if it gets really bad, I'll start randomly falling asleep during the day (and I usually never take naps).

And then there's the crappy dreams. I have this recurring nightmare where I get stuck in a furniture store. There's no monsters, it's well-lit, there's usually normal people walking around outside the store, but I just keep walking around the chairs and couches and there's no way out! And it's scary! I also had a dream where I ate Oreos with raspberry cream (and possibly a layer of mint cream) and now I keep wanting to make one. I hate my stupid dreams. :(

Sometimes it happens to me. Your mind gets caught in a loop, you keep thinking about the exact same thing until it drives you a little crazy. I usually end up getting out of bed and pacing the room for a while. I also hate it in the summer waking up early because I have hay fever. So I'll wake up at about 5-6 O' Clock thirsty as hell, with a blocked nose and a sore throat.

Damn neighbours started the vacuum cleaner at 9am this morning, the only day of the week when I get a lie in D:

If you're living in a house or flat with other people, its even more horrible. You know you're awake, and you're the only one. Its creepy. You just wanna go in and wake everyone else up y'know?
Speaking of sleep, i'm off...

I'm sorry but lol.

It usually takes me 1-3 hours each night to fall asleep. Four if it's real bad.

That's exaclty what I was going to post, every word of it.

dood, its fooking hot in here. two fans facing me and yet I can't close my eyes and relax.

Im like that sometimes, usually if its just too damn hot in my room. Or if i'm in someone elses room. All you can do is try empty your mind, turn your pillows over, and focus on slow deep breathing. Usually works.

put this on, if you can't sleep with music on at low levels, listen to it for at least half an hour before you hit the sack.. best way i know of to get sedated.

when you want to go to sleep you can't just listen to slow calm music, you have to listen to ****ing ethereal beatless mindnumbing music. :D

Sometimes it takes me 1-2 hours, even 3-4 hours in some cases. A good night is when I fail a sleep in less than an hour or when I'm truely nakered.

I find that the times I can't sleep is because I'm worried about something or something that I can't get out of my head. It's usually stuff like "Oh shit, I have to do that tomorrow", like an exam I'm worried about. The feeling of not falling asleep frustates me. I hate being tired and have had to put up with having only 2-5 hours sleep some nights. I've done quite a few days where I've been up for over 24 hours.

Trying to get to sleep never works, it just comes naturally. Trying to get to sleep means thinking and thinking means staying awake. :|

I need about 8 hours sleep to feel good the next day. I've known some people who can cope with a lot less. Something like 1-2 hours sleep a night and then being able to stay up for 2-3 days.

When I can't get to sleep, I go into this state where I have no sense of anything, sorta delusional, and I go to this site www.animutation.com , and I get all tripped out, and lay down watching tv for literally 43 seconds. then its dreams that are sooo crazy, its crazy with a K and backwards R.

Dunno if that helps anyone. But this rarely happens to me....

I get this same thing almost every night. One thing that helps is this: If you can't sleep, and you know you won't fall asleep for another hour or three, don't just lie there. Get up, read a book (but not in your bed), organize you paper monsters, do anything besides tossing in turning in bed. Then try sleeping again when you feel more tired.

Bah, the worst bits are a) I don't have a CD Player or an mp3 player anymore so I can't play music at myself until I fall asleep, b) Keep thinking about vampire. Gah. c) Sort of tiny buzzing noise.

Yeah, it takes me about one and a half to three hours to fall asleep every night. Mainly because I think about stuff too much. I should also move a big fan into my room.

"I have trouble sleeping at night. I keep thinking of the men I've killed."

But anyway, I'd advise you to study. Yes, study. Study until you fall asleep in your desk. Works for me.

Instead of thinking about vampires, why not BE a vampire! Then you don't have to sleep at night, you sleep in the day!

Reading is best I think, coz it tires your eyes, so if you read a really good page-turner book, you can read until your eyes get all heavy..and fall asleep.

How ironic, I was just browsing this site when I couldn't go to sleep.

Yeah, this happens to me almost every night. It seems like I'm the only one who can't go to sleep in my family.

I tried to go to sleep at 1 AM, but now I can't go to sleep and it's been two hours and a half.

Ugh, is there anyway to listen to this while sleeping? I just can't fall a sleep in front of my computer listening to this...

Read until you fall asleep - it usually works.

I lost sleep once when I thought I had lost my Birth Certificate! That kept me awake for 40 hours straight, before I found it under my bed(!).
