Chirldren in City 17...???

I don't know what happened to the last post, but has anyone wondered why there are no children in city 17, strictly adults. Maybe it is just a game limitation i.e. time or maybe it has something to do with the story. Time for SPECULATION...

We've seen a handful of buildings in city17, how do you know that there's no children in the game?
The only reason we havent seen them is that they're indoors out of the way.
A magazine review mentioned that a guy turned to Gordon and said "I was the last person to play on that swing". If that was true then people have grown up in the city so children have to be somewhere.

usually, children are a no-no in games (why you dont see them in the GTA series for example), as you dont want to put a player into a position where he can kill a child...

To be honest, if we're allowed the freedom to 'kill' an adult in a game, I dont see how much worse 'killing' a child is. The fact is, its not real has no impact on real life. If you're willing to kill an adult, thats just as bad as killing a child in my opinion.

now, in both cases, they knew what they were doing (by age 11 most children know everything about sex nowadays), but why is the second one a crime?

In videogames i'm alright with seeing kids die, adults die, cats and dogs die. It's not real. It doesn't truely affect me emotionally.

Sex and death are two very different things.

Kiddies just aren't developed for sex. Adults are. You say a 30yr old and a 14yr old. it doesn't bother me, aslong as the 14year old is aware of what she is doing, if she's knowledgeable of the world. If she isn't then I pity the 30yo for being so pathetic.

But thinking if this 14 year old girl was my daughter... ...well knowing my daughter was having sex with anyone would still be disturbing for me. Thinking of someone touching my daughter in any kind of sexual way makes my blood boil even now! and i dont even have a daughter! So that's n/a.

Innocence? What determines 'innocence'? imo, it will be the amount that you know. The amount that you know and the consequences of certain actions. But then how would you define this 'amount'?!

Sex with a 14 year old is a crime, to deterr the weak from praying on the easiest of targets. A man who have sex with a girl or boy who isn't mentally and/or physically mature to make that kind of decision should be punished for taking advantage.

People view sex with youngsters as a crime because the 'innocent' are immature physically and mentally.

People develop differently, but we can't make a law for every single person can we. So we just find an average age that people are mentally mature at and put a border around any ages before them. Anyone within this border shouldn't have sex with a person of any age because they probably aren't mentally matured for it.

So yeah, am all for kiddie blastin in HL2. It'll add another dimension to the game.

i'd like to add that even though the statement RoguePsi made is true to me, killing anyone under the age of 12 still angers me more than killing anyone above it. That can't be helped. More about protecting those who can't protect themselves than ages.

I know you're not, but at 14 yeah most girls are almost fully physically developed, but mentallly i wouldn't say they are. They're idiots! Still thinking that their princecharming is waiting. And when they're getting ****ed by some horny 14yo or older, they're thinking that they're making love! Idiots. Trying to act bigger than they really are.

They have no source of income. Where will this baby's food come from after breat feeding? In these modern times we cant live off the land. We buy our food from shops. If you got no money, you got no food. So for anyone under the age of employment to potentially bring another life into the world is bad for economy cos she'll be spunging off the government wouldn't she.

It depends on the shagger's age aswell. For like a 20yo to **** a 16yo old is looked upon strangely cos it's like the 16yo is pray. Like the 20yo seeked out her as an easy target.

If they do, you will probably be weaponless or something. As a few people said earlier, fraggable children in a game = a big fat NO. But yeah, they will appear somewhere in the game, most likely.

First, if you're more upset by killing children in games than adults...don't do it. Second, it probably upsets you more because you're not used to it. Just like my grandma couldn't stand the sight Soul Reaver and the likes, and just like you're not used to seeing naked people all the time. Taboo.

On the other hand, if there's gonna be a serious amount of children (i.e. nut just 1 plot-element-kid), there will probably have to be more women as well (they weren't exactly abundant in the media released so far, not counting alyx). You might as well put in other minorities, handicapped people for example. More people in wheelchairs!

Anyway, instead of talking about blasting their heads off you should consider the situation where a kid is being bullied by combine or otherwise in danger, and you can save him/her. It says more about you than the developers if you keep blasting kids heads off (though it may just be the stress of everyday life getting to you ). Oh, and as an added challenge, imagine combine having children as a shield from you, or children being in the background and you don't want to shoot em, but it's difficult to hit the combine, etc? You didn't have to kill the scientists in HL1 either...hell, you probably shouldn't...

nb: What's more disturbing? A 30 year old having sex against her own will ("raped") or a 14 year old who's been seeing a 22 year old for 2 years and they're in love and all having sex?
I'm personnally more disturbed by a 50+year old having sex under any circumstances.

I'm gonna speculate that since City 17 has a communist/totalitarian government, and HL2 occurs in the future, the government of City 17 has found ways to control people through technology, and also control the birthrate as well.

Perhaps its like "A Brave New World" where most people are born (or made) sterile?

However, that may limit the chances of Alyx having Gordon's children ;(

Yeah, lets not go down the under-age sex route. Not very relevant to HL2 as I doubt you can just press the 'use' button and start humping something!!

I think children will be present but whether you'll be able to harm them, I don't know. For the sake of realism, it should be perhaps left to the discretion of the player. If we are to see children but Valve control our actions around them, we'll likely to have no weapon at the time or they're out of our reach (behind bullet proof glass for instance).

I am starting to think children are being used for something by the combine. Perhaps in some sort of lab being tested on or something. Or grown in labs? I see something disturbing along the way tho.

And I don't see birthcontrol fitting into this environment, especially not with specially crafted technology for it. That's just wacked. This is a war, remember? Walking tanks or regular tanks, it's still a war. You don't hinder those who you're trying to protect...somewhat...at least not by murdering children or prohibiting reproduction, 2 things that hinder your war effort as he is trying to convince city 17 he's a good guy and they're safe...
