Lately I have been getting disconnected(internet halts for about 30 seconds, which is enough to disconnect me from game servers). I always thought it was something goofy with my router until tonight I heard from 3 other people in the area who use comcast that they have been getting disconnected as well. I live in Minneapolis, MN...has anyone else inn the area or not been getting this from comcast, or heck any other ISP?

heard it was a rat eating some wires. but that could have been another company

Had the same problem.

Check for unnecessary splitters where the cable enters your home, or anywhere leading to your modem. They cause that annoying interruption. I had to deal with it for like two years until I found out the reason why.

Could you explain a bit more?

Also, the internet disconects about twice an hour and it is making Battlefield 2 unplayable.

The problem is it is also happening to multiple people in the area, I havent gone around interviewing, but I am sure it is happening to tons of people.

There are devices known as line splitters built into most installations that allow multiple lengths of coax to be installed from one main line. Sometimes the installations are modified and the splitters are not removed (or terminated).

Non terminated connections cause noise to enter the line, degrading the signal. They also allow a faster rate of corrosion and signal reflection.

All you need to do is find the point of presence for the cable at your house and trace it all the way to the wall plate that the modem is connected to.

There wont be splitters inside wall crawlspaces, but they may be found in roof voids, depending on installation.
The most likely place will be at the point of connection to your house.

EDIT:
Important.

Don't try and fix it yourself though, call out a tech who will whack a line tester on and figure out what the problem is.

If you have access to your modem (192.168.100.1 or something) then post the signal to noise ratio (decibels) and up/downstream power levels (probably in dB too)

Hmm, I can't find that in the router page. However, I don't think that is the problem. It seems to be happening to everyone with a comcast connection in the area.

It won't be in your router, it will be in your Modem. Its on a different IP to your router.
If you tell me the model number/brand and your router's internal IP 192.168.*.* I can find your modem IP so you can check. (if you like)

I meant the brand/model of your Cable Modem; eg Nortel, Motorola... you gave me your router model.

Hmm, sounds like people all over are having similar issues. They say they are losing sync every 5 mins...pretty much what I got. Guess I will call them tomorrow and complain until they fix it.

If its a network problem, theres no way you'll be able to fix it till comcast makes a move.
I would still call them though.

:\

Go in and replace your modem with a newer one, most likely an SB5100 hundred or 5200. Ask them for something that works with xbox live, thats how you will get the best type, or at least thats what i had to do.

What might be happening is that they are upgrading or changing their lines and your modem (and many others modems) arent able to deal with the new frequency being sent to them.

Ahh...yeah guess its time to complain...if they say no ill ask for a manager and thats when you can get the sweet deals.
