I've had HL2 for a long time now and bought HL1 last week to understand the stoyline more.

Still don't understand a lot of things though...

- You mess up an experiment
- Aliens invade by teleportation
- The military turn on you and you fight your way to the core
- You go to Xen and beat up a fat-arsed alien
- G-Man does his usual weird business

- You are in C17
- Earth has surrendered to the aliens (newspapers)
- "1984" has happened (police state)
- Alien Vortigaunts are now your friends
- You end up getting rid of Breen

(Then episode 1 which I'm d/ling now)

So I'm left with the questions... why are Vortigaunts now our friends after all that time killing them in HL1 and what's the deal with the alien story?

- You beat the alien boss
- Somehow the aliens win (earth surrenders) even though you killed the boss
- Aliens aren't actually in control of earth... Breen and the combine are

WTF?! :dozey:

It all makes perfect sense if you listen to what people say.

-You don't mess up the experiment. A number of factors lead to the resonance cascade. The equipment was pushed too hard and someone disabled the dampening locks (this is said in Decay, which is only on the PS2 version of HL1).
-Aliens don't invade. The resonance cascade causes random portal storms between Xen and our universe. Who wanted these to occur (if anyone) is unknown but more than likly disrupted Xen as much as it did Black Mesa.
-The military are part of a clean-up operation. Interestingly their mission was confirmed at least 2 months prior to the resonance cascade occuring (Opposing Force manual)
-Nihilanth is the fat-arse. His position in Xenian hierarchy is still a little foggy but he was basicly in charge of all the vortigaunts and regulated the Xenian's portals, he was probably also their leader. By killing him you basicly decapitated Xenian society (And freed the vortigaunts from slavery)

Betweem HL1 and 2 alot has happened. Portal storms raged between Earth and Xen (presumably sparked, or at least worsened by Nihilanth's death). Xen aliens took over the countrysides, making them uninhabitable. People crouded into cities. The Combine then attacked (according to the stratagy guide they were atracted to Earth by the portal storms) and blew the crap out of everyone. Breen surrendered after 7 hours and the Combine set up a police state. The vortigaunts are now free but are in the same boat as humanity. Because of this, and their hate of slavery, they work with humanity to get rid of the Combine.

The military entered the facility to eliminate anyone involved with the project.

- You beat the alien boss(Nihilanth).
- The aliens teleport to Earth via the Portal Storms(presumably to run away from the Combine) and humans have to "hide" in Urban Centers.
- the Combine attack and Earth had to surrender(Breen "helped").

But to answer your question about the Vortigaunts:
They were always someone's slaves. In the first HL,they were Nihilanth's slaves. You freed the("We remember the Free Man"),they came to Earth and were enslaved by the Combine. They had to work together with humans(they probably would back in Black Mesa,if they weren't controled by Nih). Then you,the Free Man,came, and they thought they had a chance again.

It really doesn't take a genius to piece it all together.

Listen. Observe. Understand.

Your grammar is shocking.

No it doesn't, but being in the army I tend to shoot anything that doesn't sound British... "The Redeemer" nuclear rocket launcher also tends to kill most things :borg:

Thanks to all the others for their help - I'm about to enter the aftermath... see you on the other side.
