Hi,
I have almost convinced a friend to buy a legit copy of HL2 through steam (we live in the mainland of Argentina). The question i want to ask is, can i give him a backup DVD with the HL2 data files, wich he can install after buying HL2 through STEAM? Its a pain in the ass to download 4 gb, and that may discourage him. Please, answer as quickly as you can. Thank you

Why can't he just buy the retail version in a store? And yeah that'd probably work. Copy all the Half-Life 2 related GCF files to a DVD.

He said he was in Argentina, maybe there are NO retail copies of HL2 there.

i can upload them to filefront, or is that illegal? cuz file front downloads so much faster then steam... but would it be illegal considering you'd have to a have a steam account with that CD code regestered to it to use the files... hum... i wonder...

Pal, Argentina is not like alabama or guantanamo bay. If you travel to the capital (Buenos Aires) you can find ANYTHING. Its south america's Hong Kong.
BUT, i live 1800 km away from it, and piracy runs very deep here. I got HL in 1999 for only 1,5 U$!!!
Of course, i bought HL2 through STEAM because of that. I downloaded 4 gb (plus CS and DoD) with a 128 kb connection.

Just because it's South America it does not mean it's the jungle. You can find a retail copy of HL2 almost anywhere on Earth.

I bet you'd be able to copy the files over. It shouldn't need a fast internet conneciton if your stuff is up to date. Just make sure to get the folders right (under his account/email). I havn't done that sort of thing myself though.

To actually answer your question.

Yes you can. If you go into your steam folder then SteamApps and copy all your GCF files onto a DVD then have him install steam and paste them in his Steam -> SteamApps directory.

cant forget the halflife2 folder itself. also the post about filefront. i dont think they would allow that big of an upload and considering you have a 128kbs connection as you say then thats like 10kbs upload speed mabye less then that and it will take days until its completed.

Well that is mostly just user-accounted related information(Key settings, launch attributes) and it's saved under your account folder. So if he copied that, it would just take up space on his friends.

Just copy over the GCF thats all you need. Then you will need to update everything.

Oops. Don't think me ignorant, but I've heard South America is still third-world. HEARD, mind. Maybe I was thinking of Peru and places like that. Wonder why?

Its like this: many of the south american countries are third world: Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, atc. Argentina is one, but its not like africa. The whole country looks like east Denver, but i cant really explain it. You have to see it for yourself. Still, Buenos Aires IS the greatest tourist attraction that exists in that region. If you can, visit it. The city is beatiful, but there are many slums, and the lowest class in argentina is also the most dangerous.

Yeah, we still have lots of issues to solve.

All you need are the GCFs, copy those over and enjoyl.
