Copying Steam files

look im in a hurry because im about to reformat my hardrive and want to know how to save my steam downloads. do i just copy all the folders in the steam folder and then just copy them bakc in when im finished reinstalling everything?

Please i need help fast....

You just need to copy the .gcf files in the steamapps folder, and put them back after you have reinstalled steam (remember to log off before you put the files back in the folder)
