I would call Memory Replacement Brainwashing.

I say altered because there's nothing that really suggests they aren't, and I tend towards the idea that the Combine go through roughly the same process for creating CP, Overwatch and Elites, but the thoroughness of the process varies.

I say genetically *and* mechanically altered because, well... I don't really know. I think what the Combine does to creatures is not just bionic implants, nor is it genetic mutation, but a kind of mixture of the two to try and introduce mechanical forms into a creature's evolution (as with the synth). So I reckon their method is a mix of the 2. I say the Elites are probably the most advanced version so far of the human-synth idea, but each step below the elites is another rung on the ladder.

I reckon compared to Overwatch and Elites, CP have had way less done to them, but that they're still part of the same rough model, and so have at least some modification.

Thinking back to about 30 seconds ago, why shouldn't I have picked "just people" *and* "brainwashed" and "mind-controlled"? The fact that Barney is a CP proves that they do indeed let normal, un-brainwashed people work for them. Maybe "memory replacement" being the first step towards rank privelages means that there's more to it? And the more you're willing to do, the higher the rank they'll give you? Perhaps they just call it "memory replacement" when really it's a whole host of things, since they're replacing your memory they could have you do whatever they see fit, and do whatever they wanted to you as well.

The way I see it, they haven't noticed that he doesn't. I reckon that Barney is just bluffing his way as a CP by using a disguise, not that he legitimately signed up as a CP. The Combine would have to be incredibly lax to let someone into Civil Protection with no implants, no brainwashing, and no form of control whatsoever. If that were the case, then any angry citizen could sign up and try to bring down the CP from inside, but they appear to be a pretty solid and unified force.

Barney is not a fully signed up CP IMO, he just found his way in somehow.

I mean if you listened to all of Breens propaganda on the tvs, and you started to believe what he was saying, so you joined the CP, you'd be brainwashed. You see the Combine have discovered that the supression field does not work on everyone and some have become frequent offenders of "illegal reporduction". So Barney has been forced to become a eunuch though he doesn't mind since he can still feel everything and the chicks don't mind because it makes them reach the Big O more frequently.

Yeah man! I heard him chuckle for the first time the other day and I bugged out!

I've played/seen people play through that first part at least 20 times with my old PC that had a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card, and never heard it until I got my new PC.
