If its that cheap, why not spend a lil bit more till you reach the 1000mark? You could squeeze in a quadcore (if your mobo allows that), or why not get the Nvidia G280 video card? Otherwise, looks pretty good.

All looks pretty good.

Quad cores are totally wasted in gaming atm, so if you're building a gaming machine, stick to the dual core, and get ram with a higher bus speed. OR as Ravioli said, get a better GFX card. Keep in mind the power requirements of bigger cards though. It'd be nice to have 650 in with a GTX260, 700 with a HD4870 or 750 for either GTX280 or HD4870 X2 (both fantastic cards, depending on which camp you want to sit in, either the insane bandwidth, or crazy power camps)

The P5Q is a pretty decent overclocker as well, which you'll have to do if you even want to reach the 1066 (or higher) of that ram.

But as a base system. That's awesome. Just for expandabilities sake (say you wanna stick in crossfire later) I'd go with a bigger PSU now, so I don't waste a 600 later.

i thought about a 280, but i decided to go with one 4850 now and go crossfire with another 4850 in the future. trying to keep it cheap while giving it as much bang for the buck as possible.

so the P5Q cant reach the 1066 on the ram? in the specs it says that the memory standard is ddr2 1200, or am i not getting something?

I ensure you that you don't need an additional fan with the Antec 900. I have it and it keeps everything quiet and is silent. Also your DVD/CD bays are combo which is normal.

I don't know about totally wasted, but they really are getting used more and more now.

I would spend a little extra cash and upgrade to a Quad Core.

You can get a quad core for a nominal price increase from what you have now (like $20).

Then use that extra cash and upgrade to 4GB RAM, and then you'll have one kick-ass rig that will scale very well over the coming years, so your machine will last definitely a lot longer with the two above tweaks than what you have right now.

It's a little pricier now, but that just means you can wait a little while longer to upgrade in the future.

I have to concur with Darkwolf. While quad cores are not *totally* wasted on games, you will get much better performance out of a higher clocked dual core than a lower clocked quad core. If you're trying to build on the cheap, it's probably best to avoid quad core right now.

updated case and RAM. price went down quite a bit. that's going to be the final setup unless something big happens. :bounce:

i've thought long and hard about the dual core vs quad core thing and right now its going towards the e8400. i do very light multitasking and no video editing or rendering of any sort. i don't think that warrants a quad core.

Good choice, the 4850s are great cards for their price, just make sure you always have them in a case with good airflow, cause they are mighty hot.

No, the P5Q can run 1200MHz ram as it says, but the speed at which ram runs is proportional to the bus speed that your CPU is running at. RAM which is rated at 1200MHz won't run at 1200MHz when running with a CPU running at 333MHz (the bus speed of all E8XXX processors) It'll run at something like 667 off the top of my head. But the point of having higher rated ram, is that when/if you overclock your CPU, the ram speed will increase with CPU speed. If you had lower rated ram, it'd affect how high you can take your CPU as over it's rated spec it'd likely become unstable.

Personally, being an overclocker, I'd go with higher rated ram cause it's not that much more expensive. But if you don't intend to overclock it, the 1066 is fine.

Unless you're installing a 64-bit operating system, windows is only going to use 2.35GB of that 4GB of ram. OR you could get the 4GB now and then it's there for later.

The other problem I have with Core 2 Quads (not the i7s ;D) is that they have a lower bus speed than the Core 2 Duos, and they run at the same temperature, so the raw power can never be as high. Once games start coming out that'd take advantage of a quad core, it'd be simple enough for bam to just change the chip over (cause at that point i'm guessing core 2s prices will be dropping as it's going to be phased out)

ok all good, called the bank and they fixed it up. while my order was delayed a g.skill 2x2gb set of ddr2 1000 ram popped up for $45 and i promptly canceled previous order and made a new order with those sticks. jumped on it.

delays rule.
