Now you have no excuse for being unsure about whether or whether or not to buy Darwinia - if the low price can't persuade you then maybe this new playable demo can. Reactions range from bored indifference to screaming from the rooftops at the sheer awesome of it all - and the latter appears to be far more common. Set in a stylised, computerised world, Darwinia combines RTS elements, action shooter elements and god knows what else (more than a whiff of cannon fodder) to create a unique and near-hallucinogenic gaming experience. Even if it looks like it's not for you, at least try it. Because if you don't, you forfeit your right to complain about unoriginality in games ever again.
"Darwinia, developed by Introversion, has been nominated for numerous Best Independent and Best Strategy Game of the Year Awards for 2005. This demo showcases the innovative gameplay that has got the judges taking notice."
Download the demo here or by clicking on the picture below, and preorder the game here.

Chop chop on the news posting! ;)

Great game, buying it as soon as i get credit card (to lazy to get one) or it comes out retail.

Is this the same demo that was doing the rounds several months back?

I found that demo pretty hard to get into - ie "wtf is going on??!" - but I gave it a second chance, and found it very compelling and addictive

I might download this one too if it's got different stuff in it :D

Darwinia had a retail release March 5th 2005.

It was out in retail in March - except there hasn't been a US distributor. So, you'll either have to buy it mail-order or over Steam. Or get one of us enlightened British persons to send you a copy - assuming we want to see one of the glorious GREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN boxes leave our shores... ;-)

This would have been posted far earlier, by the way - but my college computers refuse to access the news posting system.

Hmm, i suppose i may aswell download the demo before judging it, then actually make a decision on buying it.

The demo was pretty impressive, surprised I just got around to checking it out. I wish more games of its ilk played similarly; damn, those grenades are good spammy fun.

This is a new demo. The one I played months ago was a little confusing, this one has a great tutorial and lets you in on everything...

Bloody amazing game, played the demo weeks ago.

I have bought the full game, I been looking forward to playing it for weeks, but guess what Valve hasnt ****ing released it yet, its 4pm!!!!! here wtf!

I doon;t undertsand that sentencr.

Just got the demo and will check it out later. Does it include instructions or should I start looking for an online manual?

This game is pretty addictive but oh man I messed with some of the sound options and it crashed.... now I think I have to start all over from the beginning. :(

Just played the demo... wow, waaaay better than I was expecting. I might yet buy it.

I think he wants to know the sales figures. He wants to know how well it sold over steam.

Its a standalone game, not made by Valve, and not using source

See, I told ya'll it was awesome (and so did PC Gamer, a long time before I got it working on my PC).

Yeah, but how the hell are we going to find that out? He said 'count it' and it's like...what, is someone going to IP-trace every steam user on the interweb, go to their house and see if they've preordered Darwinia? :p

Precisely.

Moderators should be able to ban for idiocy.

Did you take lessons to become this dense?

Valve don't publish Steam sales figures. There's no way of "counting" the number of people that bought Darwinia short of starting a survey and praying that people give you truthful and accurate data.

Your second statement is just childish and asinine. Frankly, I'm getting tired of your continued puerile behaviour.

Its a game on its own, Valve is only acting as online publisher trough steam.
And its the 1st of of many non Valve/Source games that will be distributed over steam.

This game is bloody brilliant! :)

I'll definately buy the full version... as soon as Steam starts accepting debit cards... :(

isn't it the second non Valve/Source game? (think about Rag Doll Kung Fu)

By the way, i just finished the DEMO, and i like that whole game. I dont't know why, but i like it. Nice idea. Good game.

I love it! In other RTS games I dont care if one of my units die, I replace it with another one and send it to war, but in darwinia I feel bad when one of the Darwinians die. I have the feeling that they really need me and thats great!

hold up someones knocking at my door........

Well I tried it and didnt really like it..thanks for the demo though valve to confirm my decision

Is this the demo where you have to help the Darwinians activate the giant rocket? I played it several weeks ago. Great game.

i take back my post..I tried it again (the demo) and I liked it a lot this time (wtf??). I guess I didnt really give it much of a chance earlier. Oh well i just preordered anyway

Lol i love it as well. Will probably buy it as well. I also feel bad for the darwinians when they die :D

Im definatly buying it, its also cool to see the story and help them explore space, really interesting

That was good. A few problems, but good.

For example: If a new leader comes through a portal, as soon as he gets there, all Darwinians abandon the leader they're currently following, and go to the one that has just come through (assuming that both of those leaders have the magical attraction thing applied). In the middle of a battle... kind of annoying. The leader gets left to die, and the spawn point I just captured gets taken back because there's no one there anymore.

could this be anymore overhyped?

i poop on it!

I poop on you!

Darwinia is not hyped, its just good! Let me tell you that they had big problem before they desided to release on steam. Darwinia didnt sell, but now that they get some deserved attention because of the steam release, gamers see that its not about the graphics(btw I like the graphics) but about the gameplay.
Darwinia is original and fun!.. overhyped is bullshit (on you)

I just decided to preorder it (for teh whopping 2dwollah pricereduction! :p ). The demo is ok (some aspects of the game could and should have been much better) and I <3 VALVe, steam, and indipendant productions, so I did it partly to support those three.

I also bought rdkf, but was hugely disappointed. While I wouldn't say I'm sorry I own it I feel that the hype made it into something it really wasn't (a full game, for starters). It certainly made me vary about buying games without testing a demo first.

.bog.
