DC Universe Online Writeup 1.0: Launch day(s) and levelin' up.

What the hell SOE? You made a good game since the first EQ? Must have been the layoffs. Time to take some time off your day to pull up your tights, spandex and skin tight muscle shirts - the chafing is well worth it after you forget you had to pee an hour ago because you wanted to beat the snot out of some goons for flash but entered a large scale PVP battle on the way with players being hurled into sky scrapers and launching semi-trucks about like dodge balls.

Well, a couple days ago an MMO that wasn't WoW came out for PS3 and PC that actually doesn't blow ass. Combat is real time and comparable to moderate and eventually difficult HNS games like Devil May Cry, etc. Leveling up is well narrated and follows the comic book series it's based on. PVP (esp on a pvp server) is full fledged. That means arenas, contested zones and free-world PVP on pvp servers (which is amazing and ganktastic / high risk / high reward by the way. Love my pvp server and it's grudge matches. ****in' Villain naturalists vine'ing and CC'ing my poor healer ass off buildings and snaring me until I turn into plant-like goo. I'm in a league but it's disorganized so we rarely meet to gain sweet, sweet revenge.

Here's a screenie of some epeening and world PvP meetups from beta. Good times. Massive scale physics based real time MMO combat, special moves that actually require skills and multiple button presses/holds and awareness other than moving from fires? Oh, I guess it's not impossible "due to overhead server stress", Mr. Generic XYZ MMO dev

---

I could give two-shits about actual comics, superhero stuff or DC altogether - but then this had to go ahead and be a good game (despite some console type blunders like the stiff as drywall dysfunctional chat system that pretty much forces players who with to properly organize to use the (thankfully fantastic)voice chat system, fortunately MMOs are always improved over time). Let's just hope it doesn't suffer from post-release PC neglect syndrome. Character creation even lets you pick a damn mentor - good dudes get to decide between Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and villains get Joker, Lex and some other ****er.

So yeah, was worth the money even for the trial, the leveling experience has given me hours and hours of fun, I feel spoiled by games between the brief (but amazing) Medal of Honor campaign and DCUO. If you've got cash laying around for some winter hole-up under blanket fun, snatch this up.

Even if the end game sucks, the core gameplay mechanics are more solid than WoWs were upon launch - and they even managed to keep the tanking/dps/heal mechanics in real time and remain fun, something nobody has done until now in an AAA mmo (I'm looking at you, Conan group PVE).

So, yeah, It's fun (for now) and I'd like to know if anyone else has given it a whirl. Fortunately it has a good sense of humor about itself and UE3 runs great, looks good and the stylization keeps it from looking dated.

I should note, you can climb up buildings like ****ing Ezio with the acrobat method of travel (you pick between Parkour, Fast Running (like flash) or Flying (akin to Superman but not that OP, obviously). I can't believe they even have the beginnings of an MMO with actual fun combat, and it's ****ing SOE. How did SOE make a decent game? I guess the world actually will blow up in 2012.

I have really big boobs that should make it easier to heal you guys, if any of you actually play aspie games that aren't military sim gun porn. join the ArmY - imo, but I'm afraid the RL one doesn't have people screaming the same monotone phrases at you in unbearable schoolboy sounding Czech accent with no emphasis whatsoever.

Alright fellow aspies, I've :V'd enough, let's have some hot chocolate and no-poop MMO fun.

--- Almost forgot! You must play with my sexy heal spec Sorceress.

I play Hero side on the realm Death & Glory (U.S server), character name is Womperella. I'm flexible about starting a villain or playing a different server, let me know.
Let me know if you're up for a little clicky clicky in the biggol Gotham city. ;)

Speaking of which I have been listening to the latest PCGAMER podcast, and the guy who is in the middle of reviewing is praising it. It might be something that I look at later on.

I haven't - I shall give it a listen, thanks for the heads up death.

Good write up, thanks. If I had space (or money) in my life for another MMO I would probably give it some hearty hmms and hahs.

apparently it's pretty obvious it's a console port to pc. did you get this impression babyheadcrab? is it instanced? how large are the instances? how detailed are the cities in comparison to to say GTA4? can you fly pretty much anywhere? does flying have any strategic advantage over running or parkour? how is solo play? someone was saying it takes no time to level that in a few hours they managed to get to lvl 13 out of 30. what about crafting? do you think it'll sustain your interest for very long?

You do realize that I'm a genius voice of a generation visionary who's going to be the most well known and successful, powerful and respected leader and entertainer the universe and multiverse(s) have and will ever know?

@Cpt. Stern: Cities are populated with side quests, time trial races, sky scrapers and various NPCs and more common world PVP zones (unless you play PVE, then it's only designated areas). Civilians aren't overly common, but they're around - usually for quest scenarios.

yeah, leveling up is relatively easy but I don't have a lot of time right now and 1-10 has taken me 8 hrs+ (I do a lot of exploration and tend to read every little thing though). By level 30 it will already be worth the money as a great leveling game that plays like a fun SP hero aRPG. The flying vs. running vs. "parkour" which is called acrobatics in game I think doesn't make a difference, they're balanced well and each is faster depending. They each get you to your destination at about the same pace, and all can scale buildings. Cities are large and fit the atmosphere of the comic universe from wide open beautiful parks with detailed plants sculptures and homes to gritty cities with flickering street lamps, newspapers littering the ground and people scrambling through the streets. The solo/quest play, which I've spent most of my time on is better than any MMO I've played, with cutscenes and dialog occurring all the time, and varying objectives.

Another neat thing is you encounter smaller crimes like hostage scenarios on high rise roof and robberies / jumpings and villains can boot the hostage off the building, help baddies escape with cash or stolen goods and later you can get a cut, similarly certain side missions have uniquely positive fiscal rewards - quite humorous.

I'll do another writeup when I get another couple hours and try to dig deeper and see if the game is actually as captivating in the mid/end as it is in the beginning. PVP is fun which end games rarely hurt and the first wave of what WoW would call purples is trickling in from the poop-sockers.

It's all going to count on post-launch support to see if gamers take to it, I would think. The chat interface and interface in general is shit and console style... it's hardly worth chatting much - you can't even move the box or any other interface items. I never read or participate any sort of (even useful) chat because I can't stand panning my eyes to the left on a widescreen monitor to see gray brown colored text on a damn black interface. Hell, you can't even reply to tells with one key nor can you talk in any other channel without either A) typing /l for league /shout to... shout /w whisper - the only way to swap things around is to create an entirely new chat tab to cosistently talk in your league, pvp, combat log etc.

In other words, it's a port - but not a shoddy one in terms of functionality and gameplay/graphics - it's a much prettier game because it can do more UE3 bells/whistles.

So, yeah - if there's no major PC improvements during the trial period I'll cancel, but they'll tweak some things, I'm sure. The PC base has to be bigger than the PS3 one... I'd think. and they would have to be completely ****tarded to sink another MMO but not listening to their core database (lol @ combat upgrade killing the only people still playing)

So, yeah, like any MMO I can hardly give it an adequate review yet, nor can any publication. What I do know is that it was a great gift for me, and I thought it would be a hokey piece of shit. Worth it already for the time I've put in.

They didn't skimp out on much - but then again, almost nobody who has seen the end has written about it (because they're probably finally allowing themselves to sleep) haha.

thanks for the info :) considering getting this but I'll wait awhile

I want to know how ping is sorted for those who don't live in the states. PS3 MMO's are terrible when it comes to outside server support.
Demon's souls PVP is frustrating, and considering DC Universe is going to be even more of a cluster ****, can't imagine how much more hair I'll lose.

I know there's EU servers but not sure on Oceanic. Might check out the website Q & A or read forums if they don't exist at all to see if high pings work out without unbearable lag.

Let's start putting bets on how long this lasts until people stop caring about it.

I give it three weeks.

From my elitist pov, I see this as a typical trash casual mmo :p

I was about ready to hop on board with you until you started insulting ArmA.

I was joking, ArmA just isn't my type of game, I have mad respect for people that can actually get the hang of simulators - takes a lot of patience and team work, patience that I lack, perhaps I'm compensating? :O.

Loosen up Sir Cowman :p. Only reason not to buy it, in reality, is because the PC version has a shit chat system (though devs claim it's being fixed).

Man, what? You're stupid.

I'll wait and check out the next Everquest. I liked Everquest Online Adventures. The Monk, Bard, and Shadowknight were really fun. They don't even have those classes in WoW, as far as I know.

I hate monthly fees though, never mind **** that shit. Feels like leeches and vampires.

Man, what? You're stupid.

Read the post above you, dude. Also, yes, I am stupid. And the butthurt ArmA fanboys begin to roll in, totally not able to understand my dry and, admittedly jackass-like humor that they should be used to by now. Love ya'll.

I wasn't rolling in this thread because of the ArmA quote, it was because I like the idea of superhero MMORPGS. I loved city of heroes, but I got burned pretty badly on champions online. I also had no hope at all and expected DC Universe to be shitty, so until I can be proven it's not shitty I won't touch it, but part of me wants to touch it, and touch it in a completely DC unapproved way.

I need super awesome amazing cool spectacular customization options and good fluid gameplay and travel dynamics. City of Heroes had awesome travel dynamics with the super jump which I loved, but CHampions Online was severely lacking in almost every department. I was only able to make like one character that appealed to me.

I called this game as bad a long time ago. I will consider it in maybe... a month or two... or three... I don't jump on board many MMOs at launch.

Might give it a go when a Steam sale for it comes around.

that's because I am a raging, socially incapable aspie with plans for world domination

The reason why this game sounds so appealing to me is because of the the dynamic combat and fact that you DO feel like a Superhero from the get go according to those who have played it. However, my biggest concern would be the lack of grouping. I don't want to solo a frickin MMO. There's no fun in that for me. Does this game encourage it at all? Are there any incentives for it at all? As in, better rewards, xp etc.? Also, can you share quests and are they instanced like City of Heroes? I hear that the chat system sucks at the moment hence my concern.

I am a City of Heroes vet but the game is starting to lose its appeal for me even though Going Rogue just recently came out. I have tried Champions Online during its beta and shortly after it came out but it got stale pretty quick. They nerfed the crap out of the game and grouping's a rarity in that game. I felt more like a gimped henchman in tights than an a Superhero.

I bit the bullet and bought it. I can't say that i am disappointed. It runs and plays great. However, i am concerned with the lack of customizable controls and the current chat system. There's no sense of community at the moment. If they don't address this any time soon, the game is going to die very quickly regardless of the fun gameplay. Didn't they scrap their cross platform plans, anyway? Why do PC gamers have to suffer because of the PS3 limited capabilities then?

The next content patch is adding a slew of fixes to the social/chat system, thankfully - or I'd cancel my sub pretty quickly.

I'm really really thinking about buying it right now, but I have concerns about the social system as was mentioned.

Give me some feedback boys!

Ahhh **** it, I'm just going to buy it and if I get burned again, I get burned again. Oh ****ing well.

EDIT: I actually immediately regret the purchase. Haven't played it or anything, but I just regret it. What am I doing getting into another MMORPG? GOD DAMMIT.

F*cking lol, Raz. I hope you end up enjoying it.

Why'd you pick a hero babyheadcrab you scum!

EDIT: Wow I shouldn't have bought this. I don't like the character creator at all.

WHY CANT I HAVE ****ING ASYMMETRY LIKE CHAMPIONS ONLINE?

Jesus ****ing christ I regret this purchase. This character creator is worse than both city of heroes and champions online.

No pauldrons or anything else like that? Ugh.

EDIT:

You know... I really don't even want to ****ing launch the actual game. I am so ****ing disappointed in the character creation that i wish I could get my money back as a refund. It's abysmal how horrible and limited this character creator is. If I can't enjoy the character creator to build a character I enjoy, I won't enjoy the game... simple as that. This style of game is all about the characters you create.

With the huge wealth of amazing costume designs and inspiration they have to draw from with the DC universe, it's surprising that they have the most limited and bland selections out of all the three major superhero MMORPGs.

I kind of understand why they decided to be so stupid and limited with it... they don't want characters to appear cooler than the heroes that operate in the DC universe. Either that or their idea of what gamers really want for customization sucks ****ing testicles.

**** this game... ****ing waste of $50 on an impulse buy. I cancelled my subscription. Too bad i'm still $50 down though.

"I can't look cool so **** this game!"

"I can't look cool so **** this game!"

Did you ever even play a super hero MMORPG? Character customization takes a front seat and is way more important than nearly any other type of MMO out there.

Compared to City of Heroes an even Champions Online the character creation and customization options are absolutely atrocious and do not even begin to compare.

A $50 IMPULSE buy?
And you completely write it off because of limited customization?

Are you god damned shitting me?

edit: Also, considering it's a game that takes place in a specific comic book universe... I would think certain limitations are to be expected.

You unlock new costume pieces by playing the game. Looting, questing and you can also purchase some of them at NPC vendors. Yeah, the character creator is limited compared to City of Heroes or Champions Online but it's not as bad as Raziaar makes it out to be.

Here's my main toon, "Beelze Bob", in all three games.

Champions Online *Sorry for the crappy pic. It was taken a while ago.

DC Universe Online

Raz did you even play the actual game at all before you dismissed it as utter shit?

There's still a great deal of character customization compared to say, World of Warcraft. Not to mention the combat is leaps and bounds ahead of anything else out there at the moment. Can't wait for them to fix the chat/social elements for PC version - I'll have to start poop-socking again.

Are you kidding me? It's atrocious. You can buy a few more pieces? Really? Wow. I guess that adds a couple more.

See, a couple of the main damn things that irk me are there are no shoulder pieces. You can't have any form of asymmetry. The mask and helmet selections are incredibly limited and uninspired. Some of them are cool... but guess what if you pick a cool one? You don't get to customize it further like you can with City of Heroes... adding horns, crests or other parts. Therefore every dude who picks the same cool helmet piece has the same looking head. The same goes with the patterns and stuff with the outfits. Atrociously limited. When you're setting out to make a fairly standard superhero much like many of the superheroes in the DC universe it's not that hard to make something, but if you try to go really unique with it there is just no wiggle room.

Sorry, but the gameplay is irrelevant to me until I design a character I can be satisfied with and comfortable enough to declare that he's pretty damn unique. I spent an hour and a half trying all of the pieces and parts trying to build some dude that I could be at all satisfied with and in the end I really had nothing unless I wanted to build a fairly generic run of the mill superhero that doesn't really stand out from anybody else. And even if I could make myself stand out a bit more, the parts that I chose weren't going to be at all distinguished from anybody else with the exact same parts. No extra little flair pieces to add to a helmet for instance, no large list of patterns to stylize my pants or boots or gloves in. No shoulder pieces... COME ON NO SHOULDER PIECES?

Your guy is obviously pissed he doesn't have his pauldrons.

Hypnotoad says "Up yours! I'm getting the **** out of here!"

Edit: Well I'm playing the game and I see some players with some pauldrons, but the game is still miniscule in the inspiration realm as far as what you can create for your characters.

After having trudged through the starter tutorial mission, I'm not really seeing anything that stands out from City of Heroes or Champions online at all. Sounds like a bunch of unsubstantiated hype to me. Granted, I'm only in the early stages, but the start of the game in the early levels is entirely similar to Champions Online... with fewer travel powers, fewer powers in general, and a weaker base costume creation set. And Champions was even weaker than City of Heroes.

I don't see how anyone other than a stranger to superhero MMO's would find this inventive. I've played the hell out of Champions Online and City of Heroes even moreso. The gameplay so faris about on par(at least with Champions Online) and the character creation is far weaker than both.

While i did initially really enjoy the game, the fun factor wore off surprisingly quickly.
You can go through this game's content within a week or two. It's ridiculous how much content it is lacking. You can notice this by the inconsistency in level difficulty. You end up doing lower level content half way through your progression. And what a quick progression it is. It's capped at 30 for a reason. Once you reach it, you're stuck rehashing previous content for pointless gear. Not that i really care but PvP appears to be ridden with exploits. So, grinding for better gear is not even worth it. That is, if you can even get into an instance. They have a queue for every ****ing instance in the game and half of them end up being broken every day.

The chat system is laughable. The user interface, in general, is quite shit. You have to press Enter half a dozen times just to get into the damn chat. The chat system is not only broken, it also has a draconian profanity filter the censors half of the English dictionary. The lazy coders wouldn't even bother to add an option to toggle the profanity filter off. For a social game, the sense of community is absent. They won't even add sub-forums for the servers. I'd continue to play it if SOE actually bothered to communicate with their community and acknowledge that these things have to be addressed soon. SOE, however, are being thick headed as usual.

Also, the fact that they're already offering a discount on their subscription isn't encouraging either. Judging from the negative feedback on the forums, a lot players have chosen not to re-subscribe to the game. I don't blame them.
