I have been playing deathmatch HL2 for quite a while and am interested in getting some good movement & skill pointers. I consider myself good and am blown away with some of the things people can do. Any ideas as to where I can find some good pointers? Thanks!

Learning how to bunny-hop is a must too. I'm not so good at it, but I'm improving. A short sprint burst is all you need to get going, then by bunny-hopping you can maintain the speed without using any more sprint power.

I thought they took out the ability to do that... I must learn. Is it the same as HL1 style bunnyhopping?

No, bunnyhopping means getting increased speeds past sprint-jumping for hl2, which is impossible.

The other version of "bunnyhopping" as people like to call it, just means that you stay at sprint speed and slowly deteriorate unless you keep on getting perfect timing.

Basically, W + A or W + D sprint jump, hold duck, let go of W, and just keep on bouncing around just using A or D.

This is true. HL1/AG/Op4 style bunnyhopping is gone ;(

The Steam forums have an Advanced Techniques thread that contains descriptions and demos of a lot of movement techniques. It's the best compilation of tips I've seen.

You can move faster than sprint speed in HL2DM by strafe-jumping (SJ). If you set cl_showpos 1 in the console, then your speed will show up on your screen, which is a big help when you are trying to learn the moves. Normal sprint speed is 320. People who are good at SJ can maintain 360-380. People who are really good can maintain 400 (or so I've been told, I can't personally, but I can get a jump now and then that tops 400, so it seems possible).

if somone is plasma orb whoring- next time you see them chances are they will fire an orb before shooting anything else, have your grav gun up and ready

if someone is using the magnum- stay at close range and move fast, your best counter is the pulse rifle, shotty, melee, or spamming smg nades

if someone is using the rocket launcher- your best counter is the magnum, the crossbow, or getting up at point blank range so that they can't fire without suiciding

switch from slow power weapons to spam weapons to finish people off and save ammo- If someone survives a crossbow hit, hit them with machinegun fire to finish them

slams are your friend- place them as low as you can or at eyebrow level. it makes them harder to see.

never run around with an exploding barrel- you are asking to get wasted like that, any skilled dmer will blast it before you even see him.

in lockdown, whenever you hear the female intercom voice, it means someone is trying to get the rocket launcher in the fan room. plug in the fan's power cord to make them pay.

never stand at a charging station for more than 3 seconds without looking around, and if at all possible at least move a bit while charging to avoid magnum headshots.

the pistol is more effective at long range than the smg

learn to grav grenade, it can make a differance.

if someone is on the roof of overwatch, feel free to spam smg nades at an 89 degree angle up there, or even better, toss a slam, grav gun it up there, then detonate it before it hits the roof.

if someone is chasing you, dropping nades as you run is a good deterrent

can't think of anything else

Bring on Quake 4! :D
Well, there is no bunnyhopping in Q4 or Q3 for that matter. Just strafejumping. Not the same thing. And strafejumping is in HL2DM as well.

So in Quake 4, there will be no way to keep your speed?

Yes it will. Like in Q3, you will use strafejumping. It's just in HL2DM you need to use sprint for it to work.

Yeah, makes sence. I have only played about ten minutes of Quake 3: Arena.

It's quite easy to keep your speed above 400, just do perfect strafe jumps all the time.

Of course there is bunnyhopping in Q3, it's also way easier than strafejumping. bunnyhoping = maintaining your current speed. simply push the jump button before/when hitting the ground. strafejumping = accelerate. you should play defrag to see what I mean.

Listen to ComradeBadger, he is the HL2DM god. He would be able to stand 30 seconds against Short Recoil before dying in HL2DM.

God that's so EXTREME

AFAIK, bunnyhopping is not using the forward button and just turn and strafe while jumping.

Like here: Bunnyhopping Made Easy.

In Q3, that doesn't work. Only strafejumping and circlejumps. If you mean otherwise, show me a demo. And I've played DeFRaG a lot before, but got boring. I prefer tricking on maps played in matches, but that's just preference, not saying DeFRaG is bad. It's very good actually.

Well bunnyhopping for me is just jumping at the right time, thus maintaining the speed you gaind for example by strafejumping. I'm talking Q3 there, never tried it in HL. Maybe that isn't the real bunnyhop, but all my friends refer to this "technique" (not really hard to hit the jump-button at the right time) as bunnyhopping.

duh, one day I'll make a short video showing what bunnyhopping is so people will stop using it in the wrong way for god's sake :).

jeez, I hope that wasn't me, was it? I know people use the term bj in cs all the time for people who just press jump a few times in a row, and it annoys the hell out of me, but against the cs crowd, there simply is no way of winning :)

Indeed... I've done a few bunnyhopping demos for people in op4.. one day I shall make a frag movie for op4 :)

oops, sorry, wanted to edit this post, actually I wanted to delete it...oh well

Nice job showing that you don't have a clue ;)...it's quakeworld.

Ah, the good old days. I actually played a couple of clanwars when bh still worked in cs (espl - now esl - allowed bh), and it gave you a hugh advantage. Was a lot of fun, especially when your opponents didn't suspect it and you surprised them running with their knifes :). Most servers had sv_airaccelerate 3 though, so even before valve removed it most servers wouldn't allow it. too bad, it made cs barely playable ;)

Quake Wars is actually Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. It's a NEW game coming in not a too distant future I hope :) BF kind of game in the Quake II/4 universe where the story is that the Strogg forces are fighting the Earth Defence Forces on earth, it's before the Q2 storyline.

Yeah, with bh like that it could be fun playing CS :) But I guess the closes thing for that is Action Quake 2 or Reaction Quake 3 (the port of AQ2 to the Q3 engine) which are pretty fun also :)
