this is starting to piss me off i cant make up my fecking mind on if i should buy a 6800 GT or x800 pro, ive read so many benchmarks and the GT seems to beat the x800 pro at everything ( low res,AA & AF off) except when AA and AF are turned on then the x800 pro beats the GT by a few frames. But then x800 pro doesnt have shader model 3, and there with the new drivers the GT seems to be doing even better
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/print/cs-source.html
but then which one will perform better for HL2 ? such a ****ing painful deciision so maybe any suggestions, arguements, comments and even vote would help :naughty:

This should be in the hardware section, but:

It's all about price. Although I love the ATI cards, I think the 6800 is more future proof (with PS 3.0 technology). However, games that take full advantage of this won't be out for at least another year, and by then the cost of the card will have come down considerabley.

I'd wait. Besides, both of the aforementioned cards are as rare as rocking horse shit - unless you have a PCI Express slot.

apparently ATi is better with hl2 or something...well god damn it, should have chosen nvidia, i bone them lol.

btw....GT has 16 pipelines...so can easily be o/c to ultra speeds.. OWNAGE!

yes but what ive read is that the GT did not overclock as well as the x800 pro according to this http://www.thetechlounge.com/review.php?directory=xfx_geforce_6800_gt_256&page=13
and the shader model 3.0 does not really make a big difference as of yet because shader model 2.0 supports 512 instructions, whereas shader model 3.0 supports like was it 65000 or something instructions but current games are only using up to 50 instructions.
Im just wondering if the new catalyst drivers released have raised X800pro over GTs overall performace?

It all depend on the tech the games you want to mainly play.

If it's opengl get the nvidia
if its DX get the ATI.

If your clocking it, I highly recommend the GT. Most will clock to past the Ultra's speed with ease.

Have a scout over to the forums at overclockers.co.uk. On the Graphics forum. Good resource for gfx info.

I know Valve/Halflife2 reccomend ATI cards and I know UT2004 and other UT games reccomend Nvidia cards. I myself think they are about the same, but I LOVE ATI cards like crazy, I would never use a Nvidia, but that is just my preferance

I'd say the GeForce is better overall.

i agree. all fanboy bs aside, it comes down to simple stats, 16 pixel pipelines for the gt, 12 for the pro, the best chipset on the market (right now) for the money with the gt, second best for the ati. both cards really do rock, the gt is just the most bang for the buck right now. i own one from pny and can run farcry and doom 3 @ 1600x1200 with highest settings (accept for ultra on doom 3) and have no problems at all, if youre looking for some performance examples co the sites already mentioned above and hardocp.com, they helped me out enormously in my decision.

Radeon for HL2. Valve developed the game with the Radeon cards in mind. Tomshardware.com have also shown a massive image quality difference between the Ati and Nvidia, favouring the Ati. The Ati also takes more advantage of the DX9 features.

The 6800GT is the far superior card to the X800Pro
The way I see it:

X800XT PE > X800XT > 6800 Ultra > 6800GT > X800 Pro

"decissions" is that the UK way to spell decisions?

I own a 9800XT and it has not impressed me from day one. The drivers are horrible too. If I could go back to my ti4600 and nVidia based drivers while getting back my $400 I would. Avoid ATI it is no competition for nVidia.

GT on the fact that pretty much all of them overclock straight to Ultra and beyond and have 16 pipes working.

Although if you can try and get an XT (non PE) and then you get the best of both worlds

HL2 was made on the 9800, so, if they test it out on the x800, they'll probably make it compatible to that, because of the people who wasted their time buying one.

No the english spell things correctly (color????? colour!!!).

After moving from ATI (9800 Pro) to a 6800 GT, I have to agree with the drivers statement. The ATI ones were horrible (but did get better). Graphics would be glitchy in loads of games (and opengl games were painful). Plus I found I'd have to download loads of third party apps to complement the drivers (for real profile driver settings etc). The Forcewares don't require that.

The only thing I don't like about the forcewares is the new folder button in save dialogs has stopped working (have to context menu add new folders).

im an ati man myself, but i recomend the nvidia, as it just out performs the ati rival

Umm ok I am not following. So you think I was being sarcastic and you are lashing back... or are you saying the British don't spell things correctly?
:upstare:

ATI always seems to get the higher FPS, so i'd go with them.

Thought it was pretty obvious what I mean't.

But looking at it again, we apparently can't put commas in the correct place.

No, the english spell things correctly.

what about nVidia and doom3? what do you have to say there, hot shot?

LOL I still have no clue what you mean.. putting the exact same words in bold does not clarify anything.

Anyway. My vote is for the 6800 :)

It does if you actually take the time to read and digest the words in bold.

Never mind. I'm not here to get into a slagging match.

okay, we start a DM forum. we get a referee and we start flaming on crap, first one to 20 frags, wins.... a cookie!! *may have anthrax on it, user consumption is pointless. see rules and liscencing for further details.*

Definitely get the 6800 GT. It surprisingly beats the X800 Pro in Counter-Strike: Source, is faster in Doom 3 and Far Cry, has Shader Model 3.0 support, and is all around just a better card. I have one, and I run CS: S at 1600x1200, maxed out, with 4xAS and 4xAA, and my FPS is between 60-70. I've never seen it drop below 60.
