I just borrowed this game off a friend and must admit I have no idea what to do as I have never played a game like this in the past.

So, before I get lost and immediately dismiss the game can anyone give me a rough idea of what to do and how to play? I don't just want to dive in, head-first.

He also lent me the expansion if that helps.

To avoid it being a pointless thread, also discuss things here. Yes. /me nods

You run around and click on monsters for hours. That's it. Terrible game.

I seem to be lost after about 3 minutes. It's all green fields however far I walk. :|

Although I do agree to some extent, the game was great fun the first time I played it.
Crisp graphics, great storyline, awesome voicework, excellent music.

It's really a self explanatory game, you get told what to do when you start a new game I think.
Actually, read the manual... it helps.

edit : Tab brings up the map. ;)

I didn't get a manual. D: And when I started, there was nothing self-explanatory. It didn't explain why I was in this random village and I got no missions or anything. I got so confused.

Talk to the people in the ville to get missions. I do admit though, I never clocked up many hours on that game and didnt bother with anything past the first or second stage type thing.

just played some a minute ago.

The game is awesome, first of, play MULTIPLAYER, dont ever play singelplayer, trust me, you will understand later when you will need help!

First of, talk to the towns folk and get quests, press TAB to see the map, simply go out and find your target of the quest. Kill monsters, lvl up, choose skill points, sell items, buy items. Self-explainatory.

The first Act is pretty booring, same desing everywhere, but you will be rewarded once you complete it with new awesome graphics and environments in Act 2,3,4,5

What Char are you playing as?

If you get confused by the story just taking place in nowhere just like that, it will explain to you as you complete quests. Its also important to play Diablo1 to understand the story.

To sum it up, in diablo1, you are in a town called Tristam, you go deep underneith the town and kill diablo, however, he possesses your body. He is then called "the wanderer" and travels East, and in Diablo2, you follow in his wake, fixing everything he has ruind in his path, so in Act 1, the towns folk you meet are being pushed out from the Monastary, the whole place has been wrecked by Diablo "the wanderer", so they ask for your help to clear it up. When you do so, you kill Andariel, one of Diablos minions. After that you go to the next place Lut Golem or something like that, the next place The Wanderer passed. So on and so on, each act you get closer till you finally meet him ;)

It is pretty fun the first time through, online or offline.

Online is pretty fun running around with friends and such; dueling is no thing for newbies though. People are pretty mean on bnet. If you can get good and make a few friends with connections to good items, etc; you will have your revenge on thoes meanies.

Heres some tips for multiplayer:

If your playing Hardcore, don't duel at all; your character might get killed and you'll have to start all over.

Don't duel unless you dont care about losing your gold, trust me it will be gone by the time you get to your body.

Be VERY cautious when trading, period. There ARE "hacks" and glitches, etc.

If you ever want help online just PM me, I'll reinstall it and teach you the ropes. :D

Good Luck, it's hell out there. (For the most part) :D

D2 MP is getting rush through Normal/Nightmare then farming Meph and Baal until you get some sweet uniques. Rinse, repeat. GL finding a normal game.

i told my dad to throw the game away. i basically spent over 400 hours of my summer playing the game that i couldn stop. such an addictive game...

this game is really good when u play online, cuz ppl can rush u and give u items that are essential for the quests.

The only time I think it's worth playing is when you have a group of friends to go through it with or your first time in singleplayer.

Diablo's are very addicitive. The story behind them...is infact.....a very good one even though you may not realize it.

The Great Conflict
Since the Beginning, the forces of Light and Darkness have engaged in an eternal war: the Great Conflict, whose victor will rise from the apocalyptic ashes to hold sway over all creation. To this end, the Angels of the High Heavens adhere to strict militaristic disciplines. Seraphim warriors strike at the enemies of Light with swords imbued with righteous wrath and justice. The Angels believe that only absolute discipline can properly restore order to the myriad realms, while the demonic denizens of the Burning Hells hold that absolute chaos is the true nature of all things.

The battles of the Great Conflict rage across both time and space, often infringing upon the very fabric of reality itself. From the Crystal Arch at the very heart of the High Heavens to the arcane Hellforge of the Underworld, the warriors of these eternal realms journey to wherever their timeless conflict carries them. The legendary deeds of the heroes of the realms beyond elicit both veneration and insight.

The greatest of these heroes was Izual, lieutenant to the Arch-Angel Tyrael and bearer of the Angelic Runeblade Azurewrath. He once led a fierce attack upon the Hellforge as the creation of the dark demonblade Shadowfang was nearing completion. His quest was to destroy both wielder and weapon - a charge that he was destined never to complete. Izual was overcome by the legions of chaos and, tragically, was lost to the Darkness. His fate stands as testament to the fact that Angels and Demons alike shall fearlessly enter into any domain - so long as their hated enemies dwell within.

Although the Great Conflict burned hotter and brighter than any of the stars in the sky, neither side could gain dominion over the other force for long. Both factions sought some way to turn the tides of the war to their favor. With the ascension of Man and his mortal realm, the Great Conflict ground to a mysterious halt. Both armies paused in a breathless stalemate, waiting to see to whose side Man would eventually turn.

Mortals had the unique ability to choose between Darkness and Light, and it was held that this would be the deciding factor in the outcome of the Great Conflict. Thus, agents of the nether-realms descended to the mortal realm to vie for the favor of Man...

The Sin War
The coming of the Great Conflict to the mortal realm is known as the Sin War. Angels and Demons, disguising themselves while traveling amongst men, attempted to secretly lure mortals to their respective causes. Over time, the forces of Darkness discovered that mortals responded much more to brute force than to subtle coercion, and so began to terrorize Man into submission. The Angels fought to defend humanity against this demonic oppression, but all too often their austere methods and severe punishments succeeded only in alienating those whom they sought to protect.

The violent battles of the Sin War occurred very often, but they were seldom witnessed by the prying eyes of Man. Only a few "enlightened" souls were aware of the supernatural beings that walked amongst the huddled masses of humanity. Powerful mortals arose and accepted the challenge of the Sin War, allying themselves with both sides in the Great Conflict. The legendary deeds of these great mortal warriors served to earn both the respect and hatred of the netherworlds. Although the lesser demons kneeled before those possessing power and strength, they also cursed the very existence of mortal man. Many of these fiends believed that the deadlock brought about by the emergence of Man was a perverse offense to their "higher" role in the great scheme of things.

This jealousy of Man led to harsh, atrocious acts of violence by the demons against the mortal realm. Some men learned of this deep hatred and used it against the denizens of the Underworld. One such mortal, Horazon the Summoner, delighted in summoning demons and then breaking them to his will. Horazon, along with his brother Bartuc, were members of the Eastern mage-clan known as the Vizjerei. This mystic clan studied the ways of demons and had catalogued their lore for generations. Empowered by this knowledge, Horazon was able to take the work of the Vizjerei and pervert it for his demented purposes. The denizens of Hell sought revenge against this bold mortal, but Horazon managed to keep himself well protected within his arcane sanctuary.

Bartuc, the brother of Horazon, was eventually lured to the side of Darkness. He was granted exceptional strength and longevity, and fought alongside the legions of Hell against the cursed Vizjerei, and eventually his own brother during the Sin War. Although Bartuc was renowned amongst the warriors of many realms, his dominance in battle came with a terrible price. An insatiable lust for mortal blood pervaded his every thought and deed. Bartuc soon became as fond of bathing in the blood of his enemies as he did of shedding it, and in time he came to be known only as the Warlord of Blood.

Eventually, Bartuc was slain by a allied force of Vizjerei led by the Mage Sarnakyle. Sarnakyle would later assist the warrior Siggard in defeating the great archdemon Assur in the year 302. Eight hundred years later (during the time of Diablo), the legends of this epic battle were still told in Sanctuary.*

Theres more but I will skim over it. There are 7 evils in hell:
The 3 prime evels:
Baal
Mephisto
Diablo

The 4 lesser evils:
Andariel
Duriel
Belial
Azmodan

The lesser evils began to suspect the prime evils were having doubts about the war. Belial and Azmodan turned there forces and launched a civil war in hell. They overthrew the prime evils and then sentenced them to the mortal world. They figured that if the prime evils were in the mortal world heaven would rush to aid. They were right. Heaven was left basically defenseless and it was Hells chance to win. Sadly for Hell, Azmodan and Belial got into a conflict over power and they created a civil war. No one knows what happened, if they are still alive....

Also some of the people that have played Diablo 2 may know some of the characters above. Blizzard has a story for the Diablo's. Diablo 1 and 2 are designed around a very descriptive past. The story behind Diablo's are actually quite nice and often overlooked by the simplistic but addictive gameplay.

The full story can be found here:
http://www.blizzarduniverse.net/diablo.php?pid=1

Diablo is simply one of the most simplistic addicitive games in the world.

I spent hundreds of hours playing this game and just had to stop. Now if I try and play it I get bored out of my mind, which is good. :P

DEFINATELY beat it on SP first. It's good to know the quests and storyline, especially when people online use abbreviations and such to describe them such as "Trist", "Forge", "Pindle", or "Ancients". Trust me, it helps. The storyline is also a great one, and the cutscenes are enjoyable too.

Online play is really nothing like the game is intended to be. It is abused in almost every way. People just continually create character after character and go through the game, leveling up. You'll start off doing the Den of Evil and maybe some other small quests like Blood Raven, then the running starts. Tristram runs over and over until around level 12-15. Then you move on and beat Andariel to go to Act II.

I don't want to spoil too much of the game for you but once you beat it you'll have a better understanding and ready to go online. I really advise beating it alone first, and do EVERY quest. Makes the game very enjoyable because you'll find many people skip any useless quest they can online and just do the required ones to move on and do endless Baal runs on Hell difficulty. You'll get your character to maybe level 90 or so doing that then get bored of how long it takes to get to 99 and then start another character. Plenty of sites on the internet with tips and hints on character builds and such.

Yeah I basicly played it untill I got every last drop of fun out of it. Great fun each time, but it needs a cool down period after you play so much of it. After a while, the only thing online to do is trade, and try and get the best items in the game. It may just be time to give it another go, I think its had enough down time. :D I'll have to see if my old buddies have any of my stuff left over; I hope so, it was a fortune. D:

Well if you haven't played in the last 3 months then your account is gone. Or were they holding it for you? Damn that reminds me...I had a ton of stuff too. Gone! Corpsemourne, some other stuff, don't remember the names. :P

idk it sounds like a nice idea for me TC.

idk if you've played since teh 1.10\1.11 patches. No more hexed crap, no really cheap items like those white rings. Not to many b.net hacks. Its nice.

Yep, Ive played since 07 off and on, and was recently playing when 1.1 turned into 1.11. Fun stuff. If your thinking about installing, PM me. I wouldn't mind playing again, too many fond memories on that game. And unfortunately some bad ones, in 07 where my ENIGMA wowow (the most over rated drooled over item by noobs in the game) got scammed. :flame: And more recently where my torch got scammed :flame: :flame: :flame: :flame: :flame: :flame: :flame: :flame: :flame: :flame: :flame: But I've learned all of the ropes from a good buddy, hopefully he can hook me up with all of my previous items + his stuff, since I don't think he playes regularly anymore. (He was supposed to hold my stuff and refresh my chars every so often)

Corpsemourn psh... :D

415% botd
4/5 griffons
high rezist high defence exile
08 gaze
coh

To name a few, tbh I cant even remember a fraction of the things I had that were worth alot.

lol yeah I haven't played in a year in a half so I'm rusty. Those things ring a bell to me. Breath of the Dying, Aldur's Stony Gaze, other trash. The always coveted Eth Botd Zerker. God I wasted so much of my life on that game.

yeah 415% ebotdz was all mine :D :D although it was named.. damn

vampire gaze from 08 patch, cant remember but there was somthing better abou t it

vortex exile was pretty nice for pally

I had a few different torches at few different times, eventualy the one I had got scammed , bummer.

Griffons was probably the hardest thing to get along with being the most valuable item I'd ever had. With a good light facet in it.

Oh! I just remembered the most amazing thing of all! Shako!

SHAKO SHAKO SHAKO

Omg Shako!!! 2 to me skills!!! (was it 2?)

At one point of my life everyone around me was playing it, I played it and it was good at first... Then I got tired of it.

At some points, you have to give it a rest for a while.

A hl2.net group could and would be fun on D2.

I play D2 for a few weeks non stop, then i take a pause for about 1 month, then i play non stop for weeks again.

So on and so on. Right now im in that non-stop period

i was /massively/ into d2 & lod but somehow i stopped playing before 1.10 hit, i was ready for the patch too, had a ton of [popular] unid gold items. D:

man, i had everything:

- legit wf (windforce), 8% /w legit 40/15 jewel.
- couple of duped wf's, like 1 or 2 4%, rest were 6 or 8.
- ton of legit occulus', stormshields, gazes (had a few .8s with some jewels i think) and other popular ones.
- hundreds of sojs, even a few legit ones, hah.
- all the popular/good green sets, like tal rasha.
- pretty much every ith there was (bows, axes and so on).
- ton of 'cruel' weapons, heap of bows (hydra and the other popular type i can't remember..), swords and some axes.
- occulus rings and pretty much every other bugged/hacked item.
- ton of runes, some ith, zod and others.. can't really remember all the names now. :/

yeah, sometime i felt like a war profiteer (or something) but compared to hacking in other games, it was just more wide spread and accepted, and i'll dare say, it didn't hugely affect gameplay.. well, not really since soo many people had hacked or whatever items.

how i <3 pk games (sitting outside the entrance spamming guided arrow so it made a wall and killed anyone.. though i didn't do this often) and cow runs with passwords.

i miss d2/lod so much, i want to get back into it, but it's frustrating starting again from nothing (especially when you had everything), i'm totally 'out of it' (don't know what's good, what's worth what and so on) and i'm 'busy,' lol.

to those who still play, is it worth getting back into ? and, are any of you 'on top of it' .. by that i mean, do you have a clue as to the market and have most of the good items and that, basically like i was before i stopped playing. :(

The market is somewhat the same.

All hacked crap is out though. Although they did add in a new ladder system.

You see now there are certain items that people in ladder can only get. Except ladder resets about 6 months to a year..im not sure. So these items can only come into the normal market when ladder resets. Which does make it a bit interesting. It also helps keep ladder fresh. Because when ladder resets...no can rush, give you items, anything cuz everyone has to start all over on there ladder characters. It does help keep the game fresh.

Diablo 2 was a great game. When I was in 9th grade (in 11th now), me and my 2 good friends from school used to play. It was great fun...but we all stopped playing.

one of the greatest games so far...a great value too...but dun play it too much. there was a report where a korean man played it for over 80 hours straight and died... well, only in korea....

i've been on and off diablo II since v1.00. It's just like you play it for a while, then you get everything you want...then there's not much else to do...

currently i am on diablo, my acct is xcellerate if anybody wants to msg me.

Starcraft, Diablo, Diablo 2, and Warcraft 3 and all there expansions have all been....more than worth there value. Infact if Blizzard properly had there games priced they should be around $300. Either that or every other game should be around $8.

Makes me almost forget about Crysis!!!!!

Hey, for a 2D game from 1998 or so, it looks damn good. I still think its art direction is some of the best ever.
