I will probably get the bronze version (what is the difference between bronze and standard?), possibly silver. Gold is out of the question with all that useless stuff upping the price...
The only reason to get the CE would be the DVD, I wouldn't wear any HL² clothes.. and a DVD isn't worth the extra money.
I was looking forward to some kool little thingy that you could have on your desk maybe... oh well.

What do you think?

Put the T-Shirt on your desk to clean up unsightly spills.

heheh yeah Spiffae indeed its on the money.
one thing tho...and that is this battle between VU and Valve is really giving the shaft to fans if u think of it.

i remember a thread here 2 months ago on whether u would purchase the retail version or the steam version and the main reason for pple choosing the retail version was for the CD/DVD, box and manuels...now factor in the hopes pple had for the CE and u can see why retail was such a popular choice.

it seems us fans/gamers are the ones getting caught in this ugly battle because now we are forced to choose between getting it via retail or via Steam, the latter being most likely no CD/DVDs, no box, no manuels :(

yeah.. the most important pple are getting overlooked ;(

taken from this thread
honestly i am so bitterly disappointed...and i guess from the responses in that other thread.. some pple will not bother to understand my/others disappointment in all this.

we are caught in a middle of an ugly battle and we pay for it like this.. :(

There's no difference between "Bronze" and the standard retail package except they called it bronze to fit into a naming scheme.

Do we even have any idea how much more the Gold will cost?

Well lets see.

Game: $50
Hat: $17
CD (ST) $15
3 Posters (small ? like the BM Returns) $12
Postcad and Stickers $5
All the "Back" catalog (whatever that is) Source for the other games.
Prima Book $25

Im going to guess and say PROBABLY $99. You figure also at ever 5K they give a trip....

Have some empathy, guys. It makes perfect sense that Valve has agreed to offer a much better package than VU, in turn making the majority of sales over Steam. As stated before, Valve gets a much larger amount of money when users buy over Steam, as opposed to a retail copy.

we are caught in a middle of an ugly battle and we pay for it like this..

Now, honest question, how do you see this as you missing out on something? Far as I can tell, Valve's decision is good for everyone. Good for Valve because they'll make much more money (hard earned, well-deserved money, I might add) in the long run. Good for all HL2 fans because it forces VU to release the retail version asap, to maximize their own profit, consequently getting the game into our hands perhaps much sooner than it would have, had Valve offered crappy Steam options.

And if you must, absolutely MUST have a physical disc/manual/box (don't get my wrong here, I'm one of these people), do what I do and buy over Steam initially, wait till the price drops down to 20-30 bucks for the retail version, and buy it in the store at a later date.

Nah... there really isn't any point in getting a package with "stuff" unless you really want to be doing free (actually you have to pay for the "honor" of marketing Valve's name. Twisted? Hell yeah.) advertisment for Valve. No cool things at all. Nah.. It's probably the standard edition for me.

yeah.. in the end, myself personally i will do that.. end up paying double just so i can have my DVD version, my manuel, my box art.. because i am a stupid freak :o :|

You people complain to much..At least the game is going to be out soon and not next year....hell at least the game is out AT ALL!

Anybody else think that VALVe have ruling over what goes into the CE even though Vivendi are selling it?

...and so VALVe took a load of stuff out the CE and put it in steam-gold? :P good on'em if they did.

I think i'm getting steam-silver so i hope they do posters in shops too :)

The CE list IGN pointed out not too long ago had the Prima: RTB book as one of the things included. The only other things were 5 less discs (a DVD) HL:S and a t-shirt. Those are worth $5 more, in my opinion. If this is true and it's now just some stupid sampler, they have ruined it for me. And if it was Valves decision it will have been the first thing they've ever done to piss me off just to entice people to give them more money through Steam.

Ugh. If there is no RTB, then HL:S (and DOD:S) would be fun to have, but they're not getting the money from me. I want my discs.

Sorry, I'm not usually one to complain, but this news has really frustrated me, even if it does hint that HL2 is coming ever closer.

I find it hard to believe that "Raising The Bar" would be included as I've seen that the price of that book would be in the $20-$25 range.
Not something I want anyway.

I don't understand this at all, you can get the version with the hat and all the other crap over steam?

I wont buy bronze, silver or gold version. I like a reaal box. CE for me.

What's so hard to understand? You order over Steam, they ask for your address, and mail the goodies out to you. How else would it work?

No, Bronze, Silver and Gold versions is all of Steam i.e. no box. CE you buy from a store.

i am happy with it tbh, i am going to get the silver package OVER steam! w00t! I hate getting a bucn of cd's. Like Far Cry for example, you have to put in cd... after cd.. after cd to instal it, then when you want to play another game you have to switch cds. Its just a pain in teh ass, getting it over steam means i never have to switch cds or get mixed up with cd keys, i can go to anyones house and login into steam and play hl2 anytime i want. Its usch a better deal and i wish all game companys had this. I would have so many less cds to worry about. STEAM ALL THE WAY!!!!

But if you buy the game at the store, when you go to play Multiplayer, you won't have to put in a CD after you put the key into steam. Same with singleplayer after you put your cdkey into steam.

but what if your computer completly crashes and you loose your hl2 cd's you wont be able to play hl2 anymore. With me, i just login into my account from any computer and all my games are there waiting for me.
and btw "you won't have to put in a CD after you put the key into steam. " what are you talking about with this cd eky mumbo jumbo? when i bouht cz from steam i just payed with my credit card, preloaded on my pc and i instantly could play cz, cz deleted scenes, and cs:s i didnt have to worry about no cd key at all. once it was done preloading i could play all my games instantly.

Lol, you buy it in stores and you can re-download it too! Just open steam and click "register a product i already own" then enter cdkey. I bought CZ from the store and i can download it through steam, I didn't even need to put in the cd, i just put in the cdkey and i could download it. I also bought a version on steam for my other computer too.

I don't see what all the bitching is for, as long as you give me the game and a manual, I'm happy. Why woul'd I want some stikers for ?

It's incredible, first you whine about not having HL2, now because you want goodies ?

Yeah I had a blueshift CD KEY and by registering that I got all the HL games and mods unlocked including CS... Then that will forever be unlocked for you and you can download it whenever you want to.

Well I understand what you´re saying. Getting the package is a part of buying a game in my opinion. Never mind discounted older games, but (for example) Splinter Cell and Max Payne 2 had excelent boxes. You can see that someone had really put time and effort in to making the package a worthy part of the product you put your money on. I just like having something concrete. And by that I don´t mean burned copies of HL2 files off Steam.

Although... the gold edition off Steam looks excelent, and I´m kind of against the idea of porting Half-Life to Source. So that kind of makes the CE look less attractive. And I wouldn´t mind having the full Prima book. Huhm... This is really tricky.

well i dont know, i just like the ease of use with steam, just pay with a credit card and "BOOM" you got what you want.

I was considering the Collector's Edition but the extras simply aren't worth the staggering price tag.

what exactly is the price tag? whats the price tag for the bronze silver and gold packages?

I dont believe anyone knows yet. I took a stab at the "Gold" and said $99. We (i will assume) will find out next week.

$99 seems very expensive... not many buyers then... I'd say $65-$70.

99 bucks doesn´t seem that expensive when you think about everything that´s included.
