I just bought a used version of Half Life 2. I never played Half Life 1. I just installed it and am ready to play but was curious if I have to install Steam to use it? I just want to play HL2 on my computer but not online. Is there any way to do this without installed Steam?

Thanks

AF1

...no you must have steam installed and running to play HL2. You will need to be conncted to the net when you start steam and register HL2, and after that you can play in offline mode I think...

did you buy an account with that? I think you might run into problems if the game has already been registered...

Okay let me try again:

1. u need steam to play. u can't play hl2 without steam. steam steam steam.
2. I don't know enough about your situation to help you further, like how did you "install" HL2 if you didn't use a cd/dvd drive? You must have installed it illegally or by downloading it with steam. If the former then gtfo. If the later then do this:

1. Connect to the net and start steam
2. After updates are finished automatically downloading, start up HL2
3. Exit HL2 and close steam
5. Disconnect from the net
6. Start steam, it should ask you if you want to start in offline mode.
7. You should be able to play HL2 in offline mode now.

The fact that he implies that he has installed HL2, but not Steam says it all.

Let me get this right...you dont have a DVD drive which means that you dont have a fysical verison of the game...which means that you downloaded it somehow and cant use it because you need steam.

Well, good luck, you just blowed your cover......guys...load the AKs, give me that MG42...lock and load!

PIRATE IN SIGHT.....FIIIIIRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Even if it was legal he'd still be screwed because it was used :P

You say you bought a used version that didn't come with steam, and you didn't need a DVD to install it? Either you're telling the truth, which means you bought someone else's downloaded copy of HL2 on a bunch of burned CDs, or you've just downloaded it and used the lamest cover story in the history of the net.
Either way, you're a moron.

*watching in great exitement and fear as the BAN HAMMERZOR slays AF1 while im saying "..oooooooooooooooo...aaaaaa.ooooooo" *

No..I did this legally. I paid $$ for the game --- honestly. If I didn't, I would tell you. The reason I ask this is because I freaking hate having to go through a third party. Sierra f'd up like that.

Neither can i, your the one that f****** mentioned it !

lol dammit airforceone I give up, just go buy the damn game brand new and not used, and follow the instructions on the box/manual to install it!

Well there's one thing you're right about...

Strogg? Cool name. Reminds me of when I wipe my ass and I find stroggs left behind.

this is too funny...

I especially enjoyed the part were he confuses my sig for a reply(thanks to whoever solved this mystery, for a moment there I thought this guy was completely retarded) then continues to **** about with this misinformation and completely failing to realise what everybody is telling him(proving that he is indeed a complete ****ing retard)

I also like where he points out that Steam is a 3rd party program...lol

You've owned yourself, you've been owned by the forum, and you've been owned by pirates on ebay. You seem to be consistently failing at life

You bought a used version so the key is tied to an account (email/pw) already. Do you have the account info? Link

Steam isn't 3rd party. It is not like gamespy included with other games. It is a valve product but instead of being built into HL2 (invisible to the end user) it is used with all their games to download and manage. To play the game steam needs to be installed and the game needs to connect online for the first time to be validated. After that it is possible to run in offline mode. I think you truely have to be disconncted from the net though.

Well this has got a tad out of hand. airforceone is now banned from the forums.
