I really don't want to become adicted to anything, want to do more than just pass the time (ie, is the art/story/characters/immersion great or is it just to smash goblin faces in with a warhammar?), and is it worth while still playing casually (ie .5 to 1 hour a day/every other day)?

Can you recommend this given these desires?

Oh yes, and the Oblivion review banner on gamespot, what is the bronze lace guy? Armor or creature?

You can play this game pretty casually, but it really doesn't get "omfg fun" until you get far into the game and you can go around kicking asses, but if you just want some quick stuff to do to pass the time there is a lot of small things to do (arena, delivery/thief quests/ running around in dungeons..etc)

It's got a decent story with many other good side quest stories. Dark Brotherhood quests take a very good twist and the Thieves Guide suprised me at the end. Cool Arena.

You might become addicted, just be sure to have an alarm nearby...this reminds of diablo\starcraft where next thing you know it's 2-3 hours later.

I actually am thinking of getting Psychonauts cause its so cheap and I've heard so much about it (loved the demo, art, humor, gameplay), but this is just so tempting.

I'm just really scared about getting these really hyped games as I recently got RE4 and while the gameplay and graphics were outstanding, it really wasn't a worthwhile experience. I really didn't get scared and the story wasn't anything above average.

this game is easy to pickup whenever you find the time
however, you may find yourself playing for longer than intended :P

And make absolutly sure to read a lot of faqs on character creation. Creating a wrong character at the beginning of teh game will make the game very tedious and unenjoyable. Plus there's no way to change your character setting once you are out of the initial area (exluding cheats of course).

I honestly think this game is perfect for ANYONE. My roommate only plays FPS games, and I'm pretty sure he never played an RPG before in his life before Oblivion. He played it once, and now he's hooked. He plays it at least 4 hours a day.

And yes, this is a game that you can dump hours into. Also, it's a game that you can play very casually. You can play immerse yourself in the amazing RPG world, or you can " just smash goblin faces in with a warhammar." You can pretty much have fun with this game, regardless of how you play.

At least, that's what I think.

I found the game really laid back. Isn't addicting at all. Makes it alot more fun.

Since there is no "competition" like MMORPGs and all.

I've been really busy lately myself, and I've found that I can get work done when I need to, and still have tons of fun playing Oblivion in short spurts. It's fun in a healthy way, not senselessly addicting as would be an MMO.

And yeah, the atmosphere in this game is fantastic. When I don't have time for a big time commitment, I'll sometimes just load it up and wander around in the forest for a few minutes.

So in conclusion, you need this game. Everyone needs this game.

You say you don't want to be addicted, but your avatar is of one of the most addicting games on the planet :O

Same. I never played RPGs before. Never could keep my attention long enough, and to say the least, I am hooked. This is an amazing game.
