Download speeds

Something I dont understand. Steam usually downloads things like updates and media over 250 kb/s for me, but I have never reached this speed downlaoding something from the internet. (Tops about 80-100 kb/s)

Why is this?

Because Steam lets you download more before capping your download speed?

I don't think steam is very accurate on download speeds sometimes. I used to get speed of like 600kb for a minute or two when I only had a 768kbps connection.

It doesn't measure download speeds in kb/s, it measures them in kbits

But that wouldnt really make sense though. If I dload a large update at like 400-500kb/s, surely It cant be bits, if Im getting the dload done in the matter of minutes.

Don't trust Steam with anything downloading related.

Anyone know what Steam is so slow? I'm downloading EP1 right now and i download at around 400KB/s on a 100mbit pipe... which is ridiculous. Same thing when I had 8mbit.. nowhere near the limit. Steam got sooo much bandwidth to spare... why not use it?

I remember when you'd download at 1.2 mb/s..people were flipping, then they found it it was bits not bytes...yeah..

i have 2mb connection, but never get close to limit. 100kb per second is pretty good for me - sometimes i reach 150/200 but that only happended when downloading from Steam.

and people with there connections. I've come to just automatically assume that when I have a 4 mb connection, 400kbps is my max download speed. I've never been able to understand that stuff. devide by 8 to get the right number..8 bits in a byte? iunno.

If you have a 2mbit pipe you do:

2000/8 = 250 kilobyte/s

Well, then I should be downloading at 500KB/s since I hvae 4 meg down. But I cap out at like 300ish. \= Damn

I've got a 4meg and cap at about 450.

I'm on 4 Mbit/s ADSL (4.17 according to TPTEST5) and my average download speed (once the transfer speed is stable) is somewhere between 250 kb/s and 300 kb/s. There's a wicked fast server that I download big files from when I want to test my max download speed, and that gives me 500+ kb/s once the download is stable. To be perfectly honest I don't care if I'm on 0.25, 4 or 24 Mbit/s, as long as get what I'm paying for. Otherwise I get cranky.

You are not garanted 4mbit, its "up to" 4mbit. I had like 6.7Mbit when i was on "8" mbit. I havent done a TPtest now, but when I'm downloading at ~8megabyte/s uTorrent starts to give me "Harddrive Overload 100%" errors

I never get over 90 kb. I hate DSL.
