Dumbing down AI

Any pointers for dumbing down the enemy ai. for example, being the extreem, a combine soldier not realising that you are behind him from only a few feet away.

There are so many files on ai in the server and I cant make much sense of any of them. I presume there is some variable that defines the distance that you must be for the enemey to hear you and also for his FOV.

Any ideas?
 
I'd say the function "OnListened()" in the CAI_BASENPC class would be a start, track it from there :)
