Do you guys know if half life 2 is going to sport real time changing terrain like earthquakes and the ground will shift and stuff i know its possible because it was in the e3 2003 trailer

Apparently, it's not in HL2, but is in TF2.

Interesting...

Yes you can deform ground terrain, its setup within the map though, however im hearing rumors of TF2 using this somhow.

The tech demo of HL2 (E3 2003) said, "any model can have its displacement map altered along with its collision model." So if they specify it in-game, yes it will alter.

I think this feature will be used in mods than be seen in HL2.

The Source engine supports such things as described, yet Valve stated hl2 singleplayer will not employ the tech in any of its maps. TF2 was also stated to be using the tech in its maps. Thirdly in hammer making your own maps they have an entity to handle this.

Still, the thought of killing a combine scum and sending him flying into ragdoll death WHILE leaving a bloody crater is very appealing. Modded or not it would make me giggle a lot.

It isnt dynamic in respect everyone is thinking, The terrain will be scripted if every changing, the fact is due to using a bsp format for the engine that means it builds from the center out. Maps for Red faction use a format similar to Unreal where the entire map boundrary is a large brush and the map is carved out of this brush, therefore there is plenty of space to allow terrain destruction.
