He built a Dog and he can't get himself a nice cyber-prosthetic leg?!

Well, maybe he just likes to look like a friggin pirate, but come on...

Maybe he just used whatever at the moment was the most handy and such? I dunno, I think the curved metal leg he has is better than a "pegleg" as it wouldn't be as dangerous and such to lean forward, possibly.

Dunno again though, I always thought it looked cool.

I highly doubt it matters. It seems a little insignificant. Still, I prefer the curved metal thang Eli is sporting atm. He sets a trend for all the other scientists around the world who have had the bottom part of their leg removed by a bullsquid. Err...

That kind of leg is THE most high tech shit available for common amputees nowadays.

There was some guy on TV who could run a faster mile than most people, and he had two of those things.

Right, but Dr_crowbar has a very good point. That technology today is pretty neat. Dog is even neater, and if I had the know how to make Dog, I'd be flying around like a frickin' grasshopper on my prosthetic leg. On the other hand, he may have something fun like that, but for milling around the lab (which is where we usually see him), his current leg does the trick.

Lol, this thread delivers.

actually according to alyx, Dog was quite small when her dad made dog, only knee high, but alyx over time built him into a beastly robot.

Finally someone said it. I was wondering how long it'd take until someone corrected the poster :p

If it's not borken, why fix it?
He seems to get around fine with it.

robotic hands and legs just doesn't go with half-life... it just doesn't.
maybe with the terminator, or even inspector gadget, but not with hl.

No, it's not. Various robotic prosthetics have come to the market, although most are still in different states of experimentation. While expensive, however, it is already possible to get a computer-guided leg-prosthetic, that can fully mimic the normal act of walking and climbing stairs, that reduces limping to barely noticeable. You still can't run with one, though.

There are also numerous prosthetics used in Paralympics, that not only replace the original limb, but increase its usability in a particular activity, like pole-jumping.

This is a rag tag resistance were talking about...after getting it ripped off by a Bullsquid, I doubt Eli would be able to just hop along to the nearest hospital...

Point. But he did have enough tools and know-how to build Dog. Admittedly, it would feel strange to have some cyberpunkish implant on him, but technologically speaking, he shouldn't have too much trouble in making a better prosthetic than the one we see him with.

Why would he need one? He's a man of science.

Building D0g took years. All the time adding and adding new parts and materials. Eli probably didn't want to go through the same treatment of reconstructing the artificial leg for himself over the years, so he likely just stayed with his first one.

I would also think that D0g, protection for Alyx and by extension himself, not to mention the teleporter construction, would be far more important than making a fake leg look more presentable.

Eli cares about other people, escaping Combines grip is more of a concern than his own leg, that obviously seems to do its function

That settles it. Dog used to be Eli's robotic leg, but Alyx stole it.

You win. XD

But seriously though, I really don't mind how his leg looks. Personally to me, it maikes sense for him to just have one, since it serves the purpose well enough, and that probably he cares more about teleportation and such than making himself into the 600 million dollar man.

It's like asking why Kleiner doesn't wear contacts. He doesn't want to :P

Eli isn't the kind of guy to selfishly spend time on giving himself a new leg when he could be making some new gun for the resistance or turning Dog into an even more formidable protector of Alyx.

I think hes a little busy focusing on the resistance to care about what the new prostetic leg fashion is.

He is a down to earth personality and is a little too busy focusing on how to kick the combines asses to care about ANYTHING.

And maybe it was painful assembling the leg onto his body perhaps he doesn't want to go through that pain again, lets be honest it look pretty dodgy, from a certain angle it look as iff it a bent metal pole shoved up into the bleeding stump.

No prosthetic works like that, for obvious reasons. Not even the basic peglegs from past did such thing. The leg is attached with a sort of cup around the original stump - it propably has an actual name, but knowing little about prosthetics and none in English, I have no idea what it is.

True but still looks dodgy in my opinion and as I say with my other arguments he is too busy helping the resistance to fit and make a new leg as some have already mentioned it took years to build dog up to what it is today.

Dog was built using some technology gained or borrowed from the Combine.

Combine technology can have a disturbing habit of calling home, or trying to
turn people into Combine. Eli may have trusted the technology (and his modifications)
enough to build a simple guard dog, which Alyx improved on;
but not trusted it enough to want to stick what was left of his leg into it.

Also, in the early days of the resistance he was probably wandering around
in Cities 1 thru 16 trying to recruit members and stay in contact with other
scientists/freedom fighters, places where a highly advanced artificial limb
would have stood out better to identify him than every metro cop having a
copy of his wanted poster in their right hand. Its easier to ignore
"just another citizen who had a bad run in with the wildlife", than somebody
whose appearance screams "scientist".
And as others have pointed out, after a while he was probably too comfortable with the
current leg to want to change (i.e. Judith thinks its sexy).
