Ok the GM heads have decided to offer employee discount prices for GM vehicles which includes Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, Saab, Hummer, Cadillac, GMC, Oldsmobile, and Saturn. Ok this is cool for the consumer, but what about the employees themselves? I mean, they have to be thinking, "Wtf? The only reason I joined this company was to get the car discount." right? It's like, I would argue, ALL retail clothing companies hire people who want the employee discount. well, give that to everyone and how do you hire people there? ok, i'm done. It's something odd i noticed. I guess this didn't really need its own thread, but hey, whatever.

Yeah I saw the ad on yahoo.com when I went there to look at the alleged Mitsubishi Eclipse ad that I never found.

You forgot Jeeps.

(I own a Jeep)

They get an employee discount on the discounted cars!

Maybe if they bought a car every month but I doubt they're very pissed or anything. This = more sales = more commission.

i highly dout anyone is working at a dealership for the discounts

Well employee discount is an employee privilege and once everyone has it, it is no longer a privilege any more. I'm sure the mods will not be happy if everyone has mod privileges, because even though they themselves don't lose anything, the priveleges they once had are no longer privileges.

I think you hire people who can do the job best, not the ones who want the discount the most :)

ok, you guys are right, but i know that many young kids wouldn't work at clothing stores if they could have gotten a discount another way. One of my friends in Pensacola was trying to work at a clothing store to afford the expensive jeans she wanted.

I work for a GM dealership, I could get the discount, I don't care that the public can.

u should tho, shouldn't u?
its one of the perks of working for the corporation...

last i heard GM's cutting jobs, so, if giving out the empoloyee discount can raise sales, and therefore mean they can hire people back and keep more people off the unemployment line, then there's no real reason to gripe about it
i mean really - losing a privilege or your job, which is more important?

i sincerely doubt that this is going to prevent the 25,000 jobs they have planned to cut in the next couple of years.

It doesn't matter, it's not permanent.

From what I saw on CBS the employee discount seems laughably small imo, atlest compared to the discount percentages I get in the field I work in.

Well...let's say the average retail discount is 15%. 15% off a shirt is a little different than 15% off a car.

All I know is that $55,000 GMC Yukon Denalis we have are marked down to around $43,000

Yeah, I work for T-Mobile and I don't care that often the consumer gets a better deal on a cell phone than I do. I usually pop on Ebay for something new and generally unavailable, and that makes everything okay.

If you think you get the actual employee prices on any of these vehicles theres a Gullible under your desk, catch it before it gets away....

saturn is doing this as well, I haven't seen it by GM though, Chev and pontiac are doing the get 20 cents off each litre of gas for a year but yeah saturn has the employee discount to the public thing goin on but who really wants a saturn?

GM owns all those companies, dude.

I bet the supposed "employee discount" the consumer recieves is higher than the discount the workers over at GM are getting. So pretty much the consumer is still getting screwed over and paying more than the ones that work at GM are.

No, that would be fraudulent advertising and GM don't need that kind of trouble.

People are just better off paying more for a good car that will last a really long time like a Nissan or Honda oppose to a chev or pontiac that will die in like 5-10 years but meh

Well, some cars are better than others for certain things. I would never buy a Japanese truck for hauling purposes.
