OK, maybe this is just my opinion, but Eli's death scene felt, for lack of a better term, taped onto the end of the game, as if Valve had forgotten to include it and the release date was approaching. It seems almost as if it's an isolated unit; I felt a distinct continuity break, and the whole thing came across as killing a main character for the sake of it without regard for how it fits in.

I'm not a designer or programmer for Valve, so I won't be proposing exact alternatives, but I'm certain Eli's death could have been worked into the end of the strider battle somehow.

i thought it worked fine. i think your just sad that he's really gone. my guess is that gman can bring him back somehow once the whole time travel thing works and the Borealis turns out to be worthwhile. Also google the Philadelphia Experiment for similar context

They put it in the most dramatic and unexpected scene in the game. It's perfect where it is.

Actually that death scene was planned far before release. As in one of the early interviews they said that a major character would die.

They did that to show that the characters are not invulnerable and to reinforce the danger. As your bound in a war like this to lose some important people. This now is a huge lose for Alyx and the resistance and will be very interesting to see how they cope with his loss.
I believe they got it spot on where it is. It's allows the player to relax after the Strider battle and gives you a high of succeeding on launching the rocker only to get a gut punch at the end.

interesting point. also has anyone tried playing HL1-episode 2 yet?? I feel like trying it all over again before Episode 3 comes out

Eli warns you about 'our mutual friend' during the episode, referring to Gman. He also tells you he has so much to tell you about him but never gets the chance. There is also the 'prepare for unforeseen circumstances' when the Gman talks through him, probably referring to Eli's death.

A little bit of speculation now. Due to the vortigaunts taking Gordon away from his stasis from the end of HL2 / Start of Episode 1, Gman is pretty pissed. He essentially acts as an agent who 'works for the highest bidder' which could be the resistance...it could be the combine. After the resistance have allowed the vortigaunts to forcefully take Gordon out of the hands of Gman he needs to get his message across he's not to be messed with. ALL of this is a pretense and build up to the death of Eli. Whereby he is probably located by Gman acting revenge on the resistance by telling the Combine where Eli can be found. So I do believe it fits in.

Working the death into the Strider fight would have been far less emotional or sensitive. That fight is chaotic and energetic. A sad and potent moment such as Eli's death really would have been watered down and lost in the scale of that fight.

We've not seen the G-Man travel backwards in time.

I'd argue that time can only move one way. It can be slowed down, speed up, and even stopped (the end of HL2) but it never moves backwards.

So Eli is gone. Cry if you must but he'll never come back.
Einstein would back me up if he were here.

No he wouldn't. Einstein came up with the theory that if you travel faster than the speed of light, you can travel back in time. Just thought I'd throw that out there, but I don't think they'll bring Eli back.

yes i did actually. i played on hard and i beat Hl1 in 11hours, Hl2 in 10hrs, ep1 in 5hrs, and ep2 in 5.3 hrs according to the steam play time recorder. so if you want to do this... id suggest waiting until the release is alot closer

No, if you traveled faster than the speed of light you could see the 'past', going backwards.

yeah i will, its been a goal of mine because i haven't touched hl1 in a long time

You ever get that feeling when you see an opinion thats just too false to argue against... thats kinda how i feel about this... no disrespect homie, i respect your opinion

then again, knowing me ill probably come up with a retort later on...

I do agree with him. I enjoyed the ending, but felt that it was sort of "OhyeahPSEli'sdeadkthxbye"

"If it were possible to travel faster than light, light itself would do so. As we know the speed of light is constant no matter at what speed it departs. The headlight of a train at 60mph is not lightspeed+60mph but still only lightspeed. Nothing I repeat nothing moves faster and time being a function of motion only moves in one direction, forward. To move backwards in what people think is time you would have to reverse the position of every particle in the universe to the point where it was at the desired date in history. How does moving faster than light accomplish that? At lightspeeds time for the traveler is affected not time in the universe. Getting the universe to move faster than light would be better yet just as impossible."

Rather then write my own rant I stole my buddies from a similar argument.

"According to relativity, you can only move through time in one direction."

Einstein might have thought about moving backwards in time but he could not prove it.

Wormholes are another story I guess... provided you can survive them... (which u can't)

Oh right, this is about Eli... ummm

BOO HOO! I MISS HIM!

ok, suppose I were to travel to our nearest galaxy Andromeda in an instant. and also suppose i have the power to make all the stars i wanted go supernova to spell out my full name, the day, the month, the year and where i came from...but you could only see this from the perspective of Earth. wham! i poof back onto Earth and I tell everyone about it. Guess what?? it hasn't happened been witnessed yet here on Earth but it all ready happened in the Andromeda Galaxy. Is that technically going back in time?? no but to some it may appear that way

No.

That's teleportation and traveling light

not time travel
But you might be able to impress your friends by fooling them into thinking you did.

So we might as well stop talking about it... no going back in time. Never. Moving on.

Eli's death was rough and will likely set the stage for the next episode. One thing I can say against it is that I totally saw it coming. Not that he'd get his head caved in by an Advisor proboscis, but that he'd be dying. He was about to reveal more then Valve has planned. God damn teases.

The one thing Gordon never gets is answers.
