Ok, I've been to several forums and I'm hoping you guys can help me. When I play Counter-Strike Source no matter what map or anytime may it be 3 minutes or 4 hours it will automaticly close and a pop up will show up titled 'Engine Error' and below it says "failed to lock vertex buffer in CMeshDX8::LockVertexBuffer" and it's starting to really annoy me! so if any of you have had this problem or can help me please do! :)

DX8? As in DirectX 8? Do you have DirectX 8 installed? If so, I'd try updating do DirectX 9. I thought you needed DX9 to play the game though... DX8 probably stands for something completley different, and i'm probably just dumb.

No, you're right :p
He probably has a Geforce 5600FX, which often doesn't work because of that error. In general it means his graphics card doesn't support shaders and he should upgrade. You can play HL2 in DX8 mode too, and it will do so automatically if his graphics card doesn't support DX9.

Actualy i have an ATI Radeon X700pro and it supports direct x9 i just thought i had it already, thanks tho so ill dl it, thanks again

ALSO I have a new error! >:( and iunno what to do, its "HL2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close, we are sorry for the inconvenince" and i can send the error report or dont send and iunno how to fix it

ALRIGHT!! UPDATE... I downloaded directX 9.0c and I am STILL having this retarded problem so now I have to errors showing up! the Engine error AND HL2.exe has encountered ect. I am within a inch of throwing my tower out of my window which I do not want to do. So is there any other reason why I am having this problem? do I have to set directX 9.0c as a defualt or something cuz if so I do not know how cuz all i have done is downloaded it and saved it into my ATI folder since DirectX is a graphics thing. someone help!:(

ARGH! K, I DLed 6.2 catalyst thing err latest driver and tryed to play so it got to sending client info and both the errors poped up again :'(:(

Harr... Well, being an AMD fan, i'd blame it on your proc... JK.
Man, I dunno. What OS do you have, and how long has it been installed? I know it sounds silly, but I theorize that microshaft OSs have a tendency to break themselves after a while. The fact that the progs are giving illegal operations, and shutting down leads me to believe software problem. But, you just replaced DX and your display drivers, so I think the problem resides elsewhere in your software. The only way to really know for sure is to wipe, reinstall, and try again. But, as I said in a previous post, I do so compulsively, so i may have a biased view...

If you had an nVidia card before your current card, make sure you've deleted the drivers for it.

OS? and no I havn't had an nVidia, I recently bought my computer just after Christmas, I did have to disable my onboard graphics card and put in my ATI because it couldn't handle it, if you guys need to know I am using a Gateway computer if that helps but I havn't modified my pc in anyway other then the graphics card. I went into my ATI folder where I stored DirectX 9.0c and it was there along with DirextX 7.0 and 8.0 iunno if I can delete them somehow or if there still in use and i have to activate 9.0 or anything

You have to RUN the DirectX setup file, not just put it in a folder. If you just downloaded it and saved it into a folder without running it, it isn't even installed.

I'm not sure if I installed it lol wow im dumb, ill see if i did tho...ok when I download it where should I save it to??
