Ok, i've just watched the episode 2 ening again, and that emotional impact is still there, even after you do it over 3-4 times. And I was wondering, is Half Life 2 Episode 2's ending the greatest and strongest (emotionally) you have seen in a video game to date... DISCUSS!!!

I gota add though, even though I went for 'Yes, very powerful' i was actually on the edge of tears, especially when they turned the screen black with the sad 'trailer music' on...

Sry, just thought it was a different subject, and might make people miss the big DISCUSS at the end...
EDIT: But what do you think...

lets see......someone dying at the finale of the second part of a trilogy. completely unexpected ?_?

not the best, not the worst.

Its been a long time since a video game made me feel true emotion. I still have shivers down my spine from that scene.

Yes, very powerful.

I wouldn't say it was the greatest but it was handled pretty well. I can imagine liking it alot more if I hadn't spoiled it for myself already. :P

That said, one of the things I didn't like as much about Ep. 2 compared to the others is how often you lose control of Gordon. Most of the time I didn't mind it too much, but why was he still just lying there watching at the end when Alyx seemed perfectly fine to stand and walk? In a series that always tries it's hardest to never take you out of the action, these bits weren't far off feeling like glorified cut-scenes.

Good ones, though. :)

I prefer HL2's ending. I will always remember the joy of destroying the reactor, Alyx jumping down, pointing at the reactor, me turning to see it explode and "Time, Dr. Freeman?...".

But EP2's is the most emoitionally powerful in a video game that I've seen.

HL2's ending was good in retrospect, but at the time it was pretty sudden and over fast. I couldn't help but be a little dissapointed.

Ep 2 had an awesome, gut-wrenching ending. Alyx's last words are haunting, a plea most desperate. You can feel things slipping away for her... first her mother, now her father, and she is truly alone in the world.

Another video game ending that stood out, for me, was the ending to Wing Commander 4. WC4 was less game and more movie, admittedly, with its extensive FMV sequences.. but the ending debate with Tolwyn was amazing.

I really enjoyed the voice acting and the pure immersion of the ending. When Eli tells Alyx he loves her and she blurts back a garbled "I love you" or "I know you do" (cant really tell) it just seems so realistic, like shes really freaking out.

The first time i watched i thought Eli said "You hear that shit?" when his mind was getting invaded before he nailed it with the pipe. Really he said something along the lines of destroy that ship, but I kind of liked my line better :)

By far the most powerful ending I've seen in a video game, and perhaps in a movie as well.

I voted for not the best not the worst.

But, I have reasons.

1. I am not so easily effected by computer games emotionally then say a good movie. I am usually too busy playing. Regardless of why or how, games just aren't so good at plucking at my heart strings like other media. I think its because I am generally always aware on a level that its just a game, these people aren't real. If I had the chance to play this when I was younger and more easily immersed in a game, I would probably have felt something.

2. My game started stuttering at the end and I couldn't hear any audio. A stuttering screen and lack of audio kind of ruins it.

3. I already knew he was going to die, as such, it wasn't a shock or surprise. Though to redeem myself I did feel the pit stomach feeling of knowing something is going to happen and you can't really do anything about it, you just gotta go and be an unwilling witness. On that note the whole elation of the super-portal closing was ruined a bit for me as well, watching Alyx and Eli hug as they watched, I actually pretty much ignored the portal and just looked at them, and fir the first time really hated my inability to speak. If I had true free will then, I would have told Eli not to go in.

Yes the ending was a blast to my head, I didn't read any spoilers so I didn't know this would happen.

I know what you saying when you say 'These characters arent real' but its like a film, the characters arent real, but the actors are and you can just feel the emotion in their voices, and even though I knew, if anyone, it would be him to die but I had thought we all been horribly miss led about a death when I heard about Alyx and the hunter attack. Like we had been told of a death but without the 'near to' bit on it, so extreme impact

Although it was a brilliant ending, I have to say i've seen more emotional. At the end of Bioshock, the good ending. It is truly heart warming and yet saddening that its all over at the same time.

Yes, very powerful. I didn't cry at all, but I was shaken up.

In the end I had a "What in Ron Burgandy's name just happened?!" in a good way. :P

Powerful. I think I prefered HL2's though, that felt more epic. But then, this is the second of a trilogy...

I almost teared up. It was an awesome ending.

Of course people liked the HL2 ending more. Big ass bomb going off is always cool. (Yes it was a darkmatter core, but they also make big explosions.)

I didnt mind not being able to get up when the advisors were gone.

I could easily imagine Gordon with eyes wide-open, and telling himself "Oh Shit."

There was nothing else to do anyway. Strafe around like an idiot or shoot barrels and crates while alyx is crying over elis body? Nahhhh.

Thinking about this is making me realize that Valve will undoubtedly stress the Gordon/Alyx love connection wayyyy too strongly. So much so, it will probably ruin EP3 for me a little. If the ending to EP3 shows little half-asian kids with goatees running around, I'm gonna be pissed.:frown:

I cried like a baby. :(

Also, perhaps because I am female, I totally embrace the Alyx/Gordon love thang. Of course, I'm insanely in love with Alyx, myself, so...

Wait, what? D:

I don't think the ending will have 'ruined' episode 3, just changed our view of how the hl2 series will end, which is what we want, isnt it?

EDIT: And I heard Bio-shocks ending was a load of bulls***, doesnt it have something to do with the guy saving one the those stupid crazy girls, sounds sad to me....TO YOUTUBE!!!

EDIT again 3mins later: WTF, that was a stupid ending, a big guy who looks like the silver surfer, gets stabbed by some crazy little girls while one shouts run....Then he saves them and allows em to grow up, I'm sorry but wtf is going on in that ending....

Firstly, wtf has bioshock got to do with this?
Second, they may be members of this forum who haven't finished bioshock, in which case you may have just spoilt the ending for them. But they proboaly can't discern any sense from your edits anyway.

not really
CoD 3 had a pretty epic ending
then again,CoD always have epic endings

Why did D0G have to chase some crows? Why couldn't he had stayed with Alyx, and then owned the Advisors? ;(

I haven't seen it, because my darn computer freezes the moment the advisor bursts through the wall. (I have seen the youtube video, and it was good, but not great.
