Essay Help...

Hey all. I have a rough draft of an essay due for English class in a couple days. Here is the basic idea of the assignment:

Your goal is to write a semiotic analysis of a song. How does it mean?

Write a 3-4 page paper in which you analyze a specific pop song. Analyze the way that specific song uses language. How and why does the language function the way it does with that song? How does the style, word choice, and rhythm reflect the time period in which it appeared? Pay particular attention to specific linguistic conventions within the song lyrics in order to explain its relation to culture. What did the performer(s) accomplish by those conventions? Give specific examples of words and phrases and analyze what they mean using proper MLA format for quotes.

Then, analyze the music behind the lyrics. What message does the music convey?

I'm fine with writing the essay, that's not a big deal (although suggestions are welcome). However, I want to make sure I choose a song that can be analyzed deeply enough to address these points. If you guys have any suggestions for songs that would make writing this essay a little easier, please post them.

I'm busy with a lot of college stuff right now, so I don't have a lot of time to go looking for deep songs.

American Pie by Don McLean is a sureshot, if not a little cliche.

Anything by Bob Dylan should be good as well.

It doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a "pop" song, just a song in popular culture that your average person has heard.
