I think there are also lots of opportunities between interoperability between our various games so we kind of look at, sort of, crossover DLC ideas 'cus we think there is a lot of overlap in the groups of people who play these and so giving people incentives to move between the different games is something that we are looking at a lot.
...
But we are also, I think from a design perspective, looking at all of our games and trying to think of, are there ways to add value to these collections of games? So if someone has Team Fortress 2 and they have Left 4 Dead 2, you know, what's exciting and interesting to those kinds of customers?

So, more crossover stuff is probably on the way. This interview was done shortly before Bill's Hat was announced and I assume it is the sort of thing Gabe meant. Given the annoyance by some about how Bill's Hat was a preorder-exclusive crossover I'd expect a more general approach in the future.

Since Valve would have access to all the stats regarding who owns what it sounds like I'm hardly the only one who owns 90%+ of all Valve games.

For MP games like L4D2 and TF2, that's fine. They just have to be careful they don't get carried away and start trying to do it within their single-player games. Total immersion killer.

To be honest, who really cares about a hat anyway?

Try saying that to the hundreds of people who idle everyday for hours and hours, hoping to get a hat ;)

Anyways, I agree that there will be a lot more crossovers between specific games, but I believe they will not have a direct effect on the gameplay. As we saw with Bill's Hat, it is but a cosmetic - a special item - and did not alter the experience of Team Fortress 2 at all.

Now, I believe these special items (or "crossover" items) will not have an effect on the gameplay because first of all, players who did a specific thing to acquire an item will have some type of advantage over players who do not have that item. So, there is going to be a huge split in the Team Fortress 2 community, and people will be sending letters or creating groups that despise this idea. VALVe does not want that on their backs, I am sure.

I like the hats for about a day then they get old. I just still love playing TF2 and L4D through, still great games and a great solid community behind both.

Why is this thread here?

If that is the case, then I want access to Gordon's Spectacles in TF2 when I pre-order Ep3

They have already done it , with the EP2 Gnome in L4D2 lol.

Do I foresee a Valve Kart Racing game in the future featuring all characters from Valve games?

I think the reason people care about hats is that when hats first came out, they were hard as shit to get. And now that there're hats for Africa, people haven't really noticed.

Also the TF2 fanbase is rabid and crazy and should all be neutered to prevent any of their genetic material from being passed on.

Which is to say Half-Life and Portal. Valve should really get more productive and make some new SP game.

I haven't played enough TF2 lately, do they still give repeat items?

Priceless digitally cosmetic incentive to purchase Valve games?

Sounds like a Blizzard thing to do.

I got the Halo and the Paper Haloween Bag; I haven't got any of the original hats
