Feminists try to unJapify Japan

The amount of rapists could be due to some completely irrelevant factors.

Most western countries have some sort of "Protect the kiddies" plan in action. In Australia they're talking about mandatory ISP filtering among other crappy policies already in action. Why should people have to opt out of a kid safe Internet? An Internet that isn't even possible in the first place when you think about it. Protecting the kids from the dangers of pronography and other material has to be the biggest scam going around. ****ing power hungry governments.

I'd say the above is one of the main reasons the numbers here are much higher than Japan. The lengths people go to protect the kids actually goes the other way.

Oh please. A lot of crimes anywhere aren't reported due to social stigma. The difference in the rate of reported between JP and the rest of the [developed] world is likely negligible. Given you're not in Japan, its quite easy to take the stereotypes like 'honour' and thus assume the rates must be lower. Sexual crimes/misconduct here are reported a lot, not to mention over the tiniest of infractions. Like say a middle aged man saying 'good morning' to a school girl as they passed each other on the street, true story.

Please don't try to get caught in the trap of 'but its their culture...'. Its a terrible basis for making assumptions, as are all stereotypes.

Yeah, I see plenty of that in Australia too (note: AU is where I'm originally from).

Well excuse me for extrapolating on the basis of the ****ing academic papers I was reading. I realise now that they are worthless, and that anecdotal evidence is the way to go.

(I glean this information from a report about the 80s - 00s social sensation of institutionalised bullying in Japanese schools, but I'm willing to bet money that it would be applicable to sexual assault/other crimes as well)

Well we only have your word on this and no actual source to verify whether or not it's a credible paper/report/study/whatever. Don't get angry at the guy calling bullshit when really that's all we've got.

Most people get raped and never say anything. I know or have met many people that didn't say anything, but I don't know any that have reported it. I think people are more likely to report a rape if it was scary and/or violent.

I don't think it really makes any difference what country you live in, people that are raped want to forget about it; it's a haunting memory for them; they don't want to blow it into some big extravaganza on the news for everyone to know, to go through the whole police report while they examine you and everything; go to court and point the defendant out, and so on.

Maybe Japan is the worst for this, I wouldn't know.

Just my 2 cents.

I was going to bring this up earlier. You're talking about bullying and the like in the school Systems. Having been bullied throughout my entire schooling life till I graduated from High School I can say that reporting incidents never did anything. If I did report an incident I'd usally get punished for doing the right thing, funny that.

Now outside of school (haven't read the thing maybe it touches on this) I'd be more than willing to go to the police if I was assualted in some fashion. Inside school? Fat chance I'd get suspended for being the victim of a fight (even if I didn't throw any punches back). Although there was an incident where I managed to peg someone with a chair from across a drama room, that shit was funny.

Inside and outside of the schooling system are completely different enviroments. Short of beating someone to a bloody pulp there would be no criminal conviction if that person was a member of your school. Anyone else and you can beat your arse the police would be involved. Then you have the discussion at hand which is sexual crimes which I'd hazard a guess as being completly different to bullying in a school system, maybe I'm wrong I don't really care either way. I just think what you think is a relevant source of information isn't.

"“In Japan porn is insipid, finding its way even into the homes of common folk, and there is much depiction of rape in these works. For some years now, this has been a source of concern to overseas human rights groups.”"

Oh noes porn, bloody prudes.

In addition, Article 14 of the Japanese Constitution guarantees equality under the law and states that there shall be no “discrimination in political, economic or social relations because of race, creed, sex, social status or family origin.” Computer games such as RapeLay condone gender-based discriminatory attitudes and stereotypes, which perpetuate violence against women. Rather than allowing them to flourish, the Japanese government should be taking effective measures to overcome these attitudes and practices, which hinder women’s equality.

Discrimination laws having nothing to do with Rapelay which is a game portraying fictional characters. Otherwise the game would be illegal which it isn't even in the US. Maybe you should start by hassling your own goverments before hassling those of other nations hmm?

That's fair enough. If I could access a direct report on sex crime statistics in Japan, I'd certainly cite it. I personally am inclined to think that in Japan the schooling system and the overall cultural system are fairly similar, but I suppose I don't have anything conclusive about that.

On a side note, bullying in Japanese schools occasionally involves sexual assault, so I guess it's still tangentally related.

From: Pornography, Rape and Sex Crimes in Japan (International Journal of Law and Psychiatry 22(1): 1-22. 1999)
Within Japan itself, the dramatic increase in available pornography and sexually explicit materials is apparent to even a casual observer. This is concomitant with a general liberalization of restrictions on other sexual outlets as well. Also readily apparent from the information presented is that, over this period of change, sex crimes in every category, from rape to public indecency, sexual offenses from both ends of the criminal spectrum, significantly decreased in incidence.

Most significantly, despite the wide increase in availability of pornography to children, not only was there a decrease in sex crimes with juveniles as victims but the number of juvenile offenders also decreased significantly.

Interesting read that paper (link here). As for schools, in any country, shit that happens in school tends to stay in school. Harassment, sexual or physical or verbal, is dealt with largely by the school itself and the police are only involved when its absolutely necessary.

Its often even hard or impossible for a parent to have charges pressed against a kid that has beaten the kid senseless, its just 'suspension for 1 week'. Yeah... that will teach the kid to behave.

I think we can all agree that perverts and rapists exist anywhere in the world. Perhaps it can all be explained away with Japanese cultural differences, and taboos. Our society has generally been very conservative in respect to other cultures, and perhaps that's why I frown upon Japan so much, regarding these... matters.

But I still have a natural, pre-born tendency towards bashing Japan, so excuse me. :p

I wasn't aware that racism had been proven to be genetic yet :p

The real issue in it all is that some Feminist group is trying to get a country to stop producing/selling/whatever certain types of media, when their own government still deems it perfectly legal. Honestly, they have little chance in hell in effecting change in the legal system of a country when their own sees no problem (legally) with it. The logical first step should be to try and get them banned domestically, before trying to take on the world.

I would just like to point out that I am a feminist and I really really like rape porn.

It is probably my number two favourite sort of porn there is.

What does that do to your fancy maths, guys?

I'll tell you what it does to my penis.
