GameSpy Interviews Doug Lombardi

Nothing new again. It focuses on console versions in which I have no interest. I wonder when will Valve release new Ep2&Portal stuff.

Thanks for the link though!

Nice interview , so a UK EA team is working on the PS3 conversions.

Im getting a 360 this christmas so Ill probably just get EP2 etc for that since I just dont have the money anymore to keep upgrading my computer, the costs are getting ridiculous

Interesting stuff about Half-life. I'd love to see Valve pretty Half-life up.

lol i feel sorry for ps3 owners because if ea is doing it then if ea next gen sports games are anything to go by then hl2 ps3 will have 3/4's the levels, nicer graphics, less weapons, maybe 1 or 2 characters missing, and probably be a little buggy too.
Of course you all know im kidding here because we all know valve (the best company in the world) are overseeing it......i was just thinking of the scenario of if it was just an ea game.......

Yeah, the same problem i have. I just can't keep up with 3d cards industry. And I don't want to buy a console because most of the games i like are usually PC only. If only I could trust Valve and Blizzard will make console versions of thier games...nah... still i hate playing FPSs in consoles and can't imagine to play Starcraft 2 in PS3. :)

The one thing that i just realized. Which is bothering me is, Portal is going to be on consoles as well. and if they don't heavily modify it the console people wont be able to pull crazy moves and tricks. Like momentum fast movement etc. I hope they dont dumb it down for the consoles. I dont think Valve will make that big mistake, it just worries me.

Someone should try sending them a email about this.

some how asuka i think valve have already thought of that, i mean its quite an obvious thing really.
They have pretty much finished with portal, so between now and then playtesting will be taking place to finetune it to make it the best it can be, and not just a port that looks the same but plays crap and is buggy and got things missing.....hell if it was ea's game the actual portal gun would probably be missing......this is valve......it isnt ea

cuthbert the whole the costs are getting ridiculus is a common misconception of pc's
if you bought a pc for 400-500 quid now you would have a very good pc that rivals the xbox and ps3....all you have to do is go on somewhere like tomshardware to ask for someone who knows to pick out a gaming pc for your budget
a console lasts 5 years, and by the time the 5 years are up the consoles graphics look crap compared to the current best pc titles.
a pc bought now is exactly the same you will be able to run all the latest games at ps3/xbox 360 level ie with all the eye candy on....but in 5 years time it wont look too good
However most developers on pc's know that alot of people have minimum system requirements and make their games very scalable.....just look at hl2 episode 1 at minimum and maximum there is no difference what so ever (obviously there is but my point is that the difference is very small jaggies here and there and detail is less but it looks basically the same)

Also pc games are far cheaper than ps3/xbox 360 games 25-30 for pc 40-50 for console....so over time you pay alot more for console than you do a pc

so your argument is a moot point

If Valve re-make HL Black Mesa will be owned.

^Hell yeah. Honestly, I would rather Valve give Half-Life a complete revamp in the way of better textures/ shadowing/higher quality sounds/ Improved AI (even though it was and still is superb) better character animation/skins/ more than work on any upcoming episode. But that could just be nostalgia clouding my judgement.

I would also like to see more story/ side-characters. More "real" characters, instead of the clones (which were amusing) of Sec guards and scientists that you encounter along the way. This would be my most anticipated game if it were ever announced, providing Valve did all of the above.

Id love to see it on 360, I got 360 last christmas. Since my computer sucks and I would love a newer one.. that can play BF2... (dream) my gay laptop has more HD space than my computer... and consoles dont lag up unless they are really old or you hurt them or raped them... so you see? consoles are better in terms of graphics and playability. But the WASD keys will never fail us. never.

Oh yuck, hell no.

Why? Most FPS's are much easier to control on PC....

What exactly about that was disgusting? Too much change? Or was it the fact that I said I would rather them work on that than the upcoming episodes? Perhaps that comment was a little hasty.

The thing is I hate when I know there is more to see if I had a better PC. And there is no way you can buy a very good pc that rivals the xbox and ps3 for 400-500 quid!

"a console lasts 5 years, and by the time the 5 years are up the consoles graphics look crap compared to the current best pc titles." Yes, and the current best pc titles will require a current PC to not look crap.

Still, I will stick to PC gaming, upgrading when possible.

Yeah, if they go back to remake old prodjects then they'd never get anything new done. I just dislike BM :P

The idea of them working on a Source re-vamped Half-life instead of upcoming episodes. Half-life 1 was an awesome game, but it really isn't as good as what's on the menu at the moment.

cuthbert i have an amd 4400, gig of low latency ram, 240 gig harddrive, asus premium xfire mobo, and a x1900gt ati graphics card all for the price of 800 quid

Now when i bought them they were all very new, however now you could pick up similar components for around 500 quid. Ok maybe it wont be like for liek but it will be pretty close to that setup, and nething close to that setup will max out any game at 1280x1024.
My pc easily is as good as an xbox 360 or ps3
so yes you can rival the ps3 or xbox with a pc

just dont buy your pc from pc world because you will get a shit computer for 1000 quid which will probably have intergrated graphics and 2 gig of high latency ram

Agreed

after black mesa source comes out i dont think there will be any more demand for a revamp of hl1 i mean bms looks awesome and by the sounds of it will be just as good as if valve did it
why bother going back and wasting time on old episodes when they could be working on hl3 :-)

I'm not that interested in BMS. It does look good, but I'm not pumped. We'll see how it turns out. But I'd definately rather see Valve do it...but with that said, I'm not bothered. I don't want them to go out of their way to do it and I'd never expect them to.

I wouldn't even want them to.

I want Valve to do it & not a remake, I want a overhaul. Such as the story fixed abit in a way that it connect to HL2. Like said I want to know how Azian Vance died, I want to see Eli lossing his leg in BM, I want to see little Alyx when she was only a slip of a thing. I want to see all of that.

Eli lost his leg to a bullsquid while helping Kleiner climb a city wall. Read it somewhere.

You never see Azian Vance nor little Alyx in Half-life. So why should they magically appear out of no where?

That would be horrible. Rewrite HL story to connect it to HL2! Azian, Alyx! You really don't understand scattershot storytelling do you?

Yeah, that is true. I suppose I just got a little excited :P

I read somewhere that they said Eli did'nt escape Black Mesa unscattered.

If you read my previous post I said I would like them to tweak the orginal HL story so it can be connected or interlocked with Half-Life 2. Like before you go to the test chamber, Eli & Azian along with little Alyx say hi to you(Gordon) before you go into the test chamber.
If they were to redo Hl1 I would like them to change things around...
And not just the sound & graphics...but I would like to see more character interaction. I don't want just a pretty picture. I want it to have a link to Half-life 2, story wise. I want to see something that was never seen but heard about.

Most of you here want just a pretty picture but with the same old feeling from Hl1. When I go around solving puzzles, I dont want to say to myself..."Hmm I've been here before, I know what to do!. Then it loses its replay value? It then become's boring because "Its been there done that." sort of thing. I want some new puzzles thrown in here & there, more character interaction, & more scripted sequences. If its literally the same game but with a better picture it will then become repetitive, Much Like Doom 3.

That would be dumb to leave Hl1 how it is, except haing better graphics, there better things than having better graphics, what about new gameplay elements. Every thing does'nt have to be a pretty picture these days. It can be great story telling, gameplay, & character intereaction.

There was no character interaction in Hl1, just Asking a scientist to come with you or to open a locket door, or a Security Guard to fight along side you......IS NOT CHARACTER INTERACTION!!!!!!! (hence G-man talking to gordon), HL imo had no story.

Half-Life 2 had a story, it had scripted sequences, it had character interaction...where-as the orginal HL did not.

Agree with everything apart from when you said Half-Life didn't have a story. It did, although it wasn't as vast as Half-Life 2. It was a story how the G-Man was manupilating a sort of test for Freeman, to basically, shape him into a one man army for him to use for his businesses. Thats the main, if only, story in Half-Life 1 and Im happy with it. But I agree completely that if they are remaking Half-Life they should include new things to it other than the good graphics, physics and AI. They should tweak well recognisable areas to give it a different atmosphere are flavour, they should definately have more character interaction with the characters occasionally giving more insite into the Half-Life story or basically just giving background information like: A scientist tells you about the Portal Storms on the surface, or someone makes a reference to Dr. Mossman somewhere in the facility, plus I would love to actually see Azian and little Alyx at some point, or at least a reference to them from Eli.

Half-life was a little weak on story....it's there. More so because of what HL2 did - it added several layers to Half-life 1 that weren't actually ingame. I don't want to see Half-life remade though.

Too late, a modding team are remaking it, unless you mean you dont wont Valve to remake it. Personally I do want them to remake it, because even though at the time, Half-Life was an epic game, compared to today's games and the prowless of Half-Life 2, its weak in my opinion, in terms of graphics, AI, physics and storyline. I wont Half-Life be remade with all the up-to-date graphics, physics and AI, along with a new, well developed and established story that really connects well to Half-Life 2. I want to play Half-Life 1 again, but since its outdated for me now, I dont lol.

I concur.

I'm obviously quite aware of the Black Mesa modification. I'm pretty much against any re-making, because I really don't see the point. A bunch of things will be changed, then this will change and that will change and ultimately, it won't be HL1. HL1 is outdated anyway, it's 8 years old, so they are going to have to make a few changes and that would simply spoil it for me. If I want to play HL1 I will go and play the HL1.

There is some talent on the team, but at the end of the day all they are doing is re-making something. And I'm really not keen on some of the stuff they have released...Black Mesa has seemingly been turned into an Airport terminal. Bleh. Not for me.

If anything, I want to see Half-life to be remade on the Nintendo Wii. I know Gabe wants to :cheese:
