I don't think anyone mentioned this before, but in the new US edition of PCGamer, they decribe you used the manipulator to throw sawblades at zombies, thus chooping off their heads. My question is, will the zombie just be replaced by 2 models, or will one gib? Will the split dynamically? If they are separated into 2 models, will the body ragdoll? (i assume it will.) Will the headcrab stay on until the head hits the ground, then go for oyur face?

Thoughts please. If I broke rules lock the thread. (?) heh heh

I believe it was mentioned after last year's E3 when the zombies got cut in half that models can have "break points," and you can set the points so it'll break into two seperate models

I'd imagine they just extended that for more body parts

Yea, there are gibs in the more traditional sense like in HL1, but with more detail.

But sometimes the upper torso comes off in one piece and crawls towards u...

Yes, that's a very good assumption.
And it will work like that I'm sure.

And about gibbing, when you "blow up" a monster into gibs, I hope it will be like in Painkiller where the gibs are little ragdoll themselves, like a leg or arm.

I remembered seeing a combine soldier falling about 10 meters and when he landed he did not gib.
I'm not sure how a real human being lands after falling 10 meters, but will they gib at all when falling?

Yeah, painkiller has some nasty gibbing, especially when you kill a ton of guys and you have to jump over the bodies : /

In any case, it'd be hard to do ragdoll and gibbing to the extent of SOF2, which i didn't think was that great, but had some great character gibbing. kinda sick.

Then again there have been questions to valve that imply that models can turn into ragdoll, but how to make the ragdoll gib as one piece. . .

No he would not "gib" into many pieces that leave little blood splats when they hit a surface of the level.

Now if we are talking 100 meters...

The zombie is hardcoded to split. The zombie torso is just another separate enemy.

even in games with excessive gibbing, i don't think i've ever seen an enemy gib from a fall... if i remember the disturbing videos i've seen of people hitting the ground really hard, they did indeed bounce, just like in that video. I think we will have gibbing in HL2, but only every now and then.

if you can throw saw blades at zombie dudes and they cut up, i wonder if you can do the same with combine dudes. Someone whould email Gabe and ask (im too lazy)

Yes, how can you ask such a question? All ememies will have cutpoints apperently, Valve knows what they are doing and won't make just zombies cut-able (?) That would make no sense, and it should't even be very hard considering the body parts won't be seperate monsters that move, like the upper halp of the zombie, or with these new cutpoints, a zombie without a left leg, or right arm. If it gets as far as that, I will be a happy man. :)

After thinking about this game I'm more excited about the physics system than about any graphic immprovements over other engines. Throwing sawblades at something than having to factor in things like density of the target (armor), masses of objects, speeds of objects, and the like could make for some really interesting types of gameplay. Hypothetically if you could propell any object at a high enough velocity you should be able to knock anyone's block off.

I'm more interested in the fact that if that can be done....can we propel say...sign poles? etc make some pretty gruesome deaths. impaleing people on em and whatnot. it'll look like in painkiller when you shot people with the stake gun....if its in hl2 that is.

Valve said that people can get impaled, just like in the strider video.

When that happens they go into ragdoll, for bonus effect.

OMG OMG OMG!!!! so EXCITED!!! Must have hl2.... must have hl2.... MUST HAVE!!! AHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Im having a nervous break down!!!!! HL2 NOW!!! NOW PLEASE!!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
...sorry about that, had to get it out of my system.

Yeah, it would be really awesome if you could just remove a combines arm or something.

"It's just a flesh wound...come back you snivelling b*****d!!"

Somehow I have a feeling that combine will be too 'armoured' to cut up but I hope I'm wrong.

I always kinda hated the fact that people died when they lost a hand or foot in other games. I hope that people can live without their hands, at least for a few seconds before they bleed to death.

[offtopic]VALVE. MAKE. DEMO. NOW!!![/offtopic]

That's a tad macabre, but i won't deny i didn't enjoy watching soldiers lose limbs in SOF2 or hacking the head off corpses...

If enemies lose limbs, they're dead. Apart from the zombie torso which is a hard-coded exception, you won't have mono-legged combine running about.

Yeah, I think Valve have stated that HL2 won't have a Soldier of Fortune type damage system.
