A-G
A
Administrator
Breen was the administrator of Black Mesa. At the start of Half-Life it is mentioned that the administrator is very anxious to get the new Xen sample tested. He also ordered the anti-mass spectrometer to be turned up to maximum power, these combined to cause the resonance cascade that initiated the invasion of Earth. Breen must have become a figurehead for Earth because he was able to get in contact with Combine at the end of the 7-hours and surrender Earth.
Advisor
The big slug Breen talks to at the start and end. It may very well be the Combines true form"In designing this character we wanted to suppose that an organism, not unlike humans, began to depend on the technology that was originally created to improve its quality of life. Over the course of its evolution, it became grublike, with limbs no longer able to support its own weight, eyes too feeble to see without aid, a body now incapable of movement, fully dependent on the technology that it created”. It is very large and doesn’t seem to be able to move around. Though shows no evidence of itself having been modified it does have a vast array of equipment latched around it. It has a mask / breathing apparatus on it’s what you would call a face. A camera like object is attached to the left hand side of its front end. It has some form of writing on its collar. It has what seem to be mechanical fins under it; this may suggest an aquatic environment. It also has what appears to be some form of thrusters on its back. This would support the theory that it can no longer move about by itself. It also may be physic as Breen talks to it but you never hear it answering him although he then responds to seemingly nothing.
Alien Controller
Tiny Nihilanths. They have a third arm, two fingered hands, a large eye and had a large head like Nihilanth’s. They wore a loincloth and had a large hole in their heads; this may have something to do with how they float. They and Nihilanth were the leaders of Xen. Nihilanth was like the king of them. They took control of the vortigaunts and remained loyal to Nihilanth. Like Nihilanth they had powers of teleportation, though not as great as Nihilanth’s.
Alien Grunt
There are not normal beings but were built by alien slaves in the Xen factories. They, like the vortigaunts have a third arm and a very large eye. Their weapon, the hive hand, has a symbiotic nature with its host. It produces “bees” which upon leaving the hand hive search for something to attack. Due to an absence of slaves the grunts have died out.
Alien Slave
Alien slaves were the enslave vortigaunts from Half-Life 1. The Combine invaded Xen and enslaved the vortigaunts, controllers and Nihilanth; the dictator of the vortigaunts. Their slave collars, on their wrists and neck, controlled their group mind. They were made fight in the invasion of Earth. They also built the grunts and gargantuas.
Anti-Mass Spectrometer
A mass spectrometer is a device designed to produce a mass spectrum of a sample to find out its composition, i.e. to see what something is made of. I assume that anti-mass refers to the crystal. This is normaly done by ionising and separating the ions of different ions. This is where I think things went wrong. I have no evidence for this but it’s just a hunch.
Antlion
Insect species from Xen who have large colonies. Some sort of queen, similar to a termite queen, probably leads these. They have yellow blood and six limbs. They thrive in the sand and they drown quickly in water. Their natural habitat is probably vast desert. Like termites the drones are lead by pheromones. They also have large mounds like termites.
Antlion Drones
In this section I shall refer to the basic antlion you fight in the game. I like to refer to these as antlion drones as they are in mass numbers and follow the lead of the guards. They are strange creatures as their most back legs stretch out to the front and their front legs go back behind them. They also have two small legs at the very front of their thorax. These look as if they are used to propel their massive jumps as their other four legs do not seem to be made for jumping. They have five nasty looking teeth. They come in three different colour variations, this may be an indication of different colonies or social status.
Antlion Guard
These are the warriors of a colony. They are specially bread to protect the colonies and command the drones. They have six quite nasty looking teeth. Their middle arms seem to have no visible purpose. They are possibly to do with the use of pheropods.
B
Barnacle
These are another species from Xen. Like the others they have yellow blood. They reproduce asexually. The offspring go through a larval form, eating whatever it can get its hands on. Then they find a good ceiling to hang onto. Once there they begin to fuse with the ceiling. They grow long, sticky tongues and will pull up anything that gets caught on them. They will eat almost anything living but seem to reject zombies as food.
Black Mesa
A secret American research base in Arizona / New Mexico. It had many secret technologies being researched including the gauss gun, gluon gun and teleportation / interdementional travel. Abandoned after the 7-hours war it has now probably gone to waste. Dr. Isaac Kleiner, Dr. Eli Vance, Barney Calhoun, Dr. Gordon Freeman and Dr. Breen all worked there.
Black Mesa East
This is Eli’s lab in City 17. It is named after the original Black Mesa for nostalgia. The equipment was probably taken from Black Mesa.
Black Ops
A special branch of the military that attacked Black Mesa. More highly trained than the marines and with better equipment. They also had the deadly assassins that had stealth technology.
Dr. Breen, Wallace
The administrator of Black Mesa and now hierarch of the remaining humans. He is in contact with the advisor. He insisted on the testing of a sample that caused the resonance cascade. He then surrendered the Earth to the Combine.
Bugbait
Slang for pheropods.
Bullsquid
A species from Xen that is quite a strange sight. They have the strength of a bull and tentacles at their head like a squids, hence their name. Their main attack is spitting venom. They also spin around and attack with their tale if something gets too close. They manage a good balancing act as they only have two legs. Despite this they can run quite fast.
C
Calhoun, Barney
Barney was a security guard from Black Mesa. Barney understandably hates headcrabs, including Lamarr. He infiltrated Civil Protection for the resistance and somehow evaded the brainwashing. If it were not for Barney, Gordon would have become a stalker or trans-human at Nova-Prospekt. Barney gives Gordon his crowbar and claims it is his from Black Mesa, this is either a joke or a connection between the resistance and the g-man.
Citadel
The Citadel in City 17 is one of many. The Citadels materialised in city centres and act as the factories of the Combine. It is where the Combines synths are produced. It is also where Breen holds his “seat of office”. Citadels are massive, stretching many kilometres into the air.
Citizens
The remaining Citizens of Combine towns have been relocated to a few remaining cities, e.g. City 17, City 14
City 17
Dr. Breen’s base of operations. Just like every other Combine city except for Breen’s presence. It is located somewhere in Eastern Europe. It is the main base of the resistance and citizens who wanted to join it went there. That is why the Black Mesa science team are all there.
Civil Protection
Ordinary citizens who volunteer to get better meals, living conditions etc. They are brainwashed and then sent out to police the citizens and keep citizen moral low. They are armed with stun batons for main patrols but will often be geared up with pistols, SMGs and manhacks. They also have helicopters and APCs under their belt.
Combine
An intergalactic race of conquering aliens. These are very powerful and control many worlds. It is unknown as to the true appearance of the Combine but may be similar to the advisor. They have conquered the Xenians, Synths and Humans and probably many more.
Crab Synth
One of the very dangerous Synths. These are only seen at the end of the. They were one of the main attack forces of the 7-hour war. They have machine guns and a brutal charge attack.
Cl. Cubbage, Odessa
Little is known about Cubbage. He is seen talking to the g-man through a telescope in Highway 17. The g-man may have provided him with the RPG launcher and warned him about the gunship.
D
Dark Energy
This is the Combines main source of power. It also has something to with their teleporters “They failed to factor in the dark energy equations”. It also is responsible for supercharging the manipulator.
Dog
Alyx’s pet. Dog is a large robot built by Eli to protect Alyx. Alyx made many additions to him and he is now taller than a person. Dog is very intelligent and loyal, he even has the lambda symbol on his back. He has very few recognisable parts, he has what seems to be a scanners head and a manipulator built into his right arm.
Dropship
On of the Combine dreaded syths. They are used to transport troops, striders and supplies to where ever they need to be. Seemingly aquatic based before assimilation as its shape is not very aerodynamically and they do not seem suited to land either.

F
Fast Headcrab
A new headcrab in Half-Life 2. Strangely they do not posses beaks. This must mean that their jaws are so strong that they can latch on to someone and take control of their host without using the neurotoxins that normal headcrabs use to pacify their victims. This must mean that fast headcrab ‘zombiefacation’ must be must more torturous to the host. Fast headcrabs probably come from the same hive and gonarch as normal headcrabs but have a different role than the normal. The fast headcrabs’ purpose is to defend the hive. Their mawmen are a sight more gruesome than the normal headcrab’s, the they slowly digest themselves leaving nothing but muscle and bone, these must not live long as they do not have any evident way of eating and are used to defend the hive until they perish. When separated from a hive it will become very aggressive and destroy anything it feels is a threat.
Dr. Freeman, Gordon
A graduate of MIT and a physicist at the Anonymous Materials lab in Black Mesa. Gordon was a prodigy, athletic and scientific “I heard about you long before the Black Mesa Incident”. Gordon was seen by the g-man’s race as possibly useful (or a threat) because of his skills. Gordon’s clearance was shut down before the resonance cascade because the g-man’s race new he could do real damage and spark off a war between Xen and Earth, and eventually between Earth and the Combine. Unfortunately he succeeded. The g-man then captured Gordon and put him in stasis as, although he would useful as he proved himself by defeating Nihilanth, he had no chance of turning the tide of the war that was to come “all the effort in the world would have gone to waste…” Gordon became a hero among the remaining humans, the resistance in particular. They even adopted the lambda symbol on the HEV suit as their own. It is unknown how the word spread of Gordon’s triumph but the g-man’s race may have had something to do with it. The g-man then released him in City 17 when things were calm enough and the resistance was strong enough for the perfect tactile opportunity. Gordon has been put back into stasis and is awaiting his contract to be settled. The g-man knows Gordon has done what he has done to save mankind and knows Gordon will refuse to work for some aliens but the g-man is using the belief that Gordon is a mercenary to gain power through his auction of Gordon’ services.
G
Gargantua
The Combines handy work on Xen. These like the grunts are manufactured in the Xen factories. They are massive beasts with flamethrowers for hand.
The G-Man
His race is one that conquers other worlds like the Combine. They saw Earth, and opportunity. They had never seen a world before in this state; this “government” intrigued them. They infiltrated it and manipulated it as they saw fit. Many of them took human form, either by assimilation or host bodies. One of these was the g-man. A g-man is a government agent for those of you who do not know. In his infamous briefcase are his briefing, a gun and his agent ID. When the pure sample was found and Breen pushed forward the pure samples testing the g-man’s race tried to stop it but could not without jeopardising their operations. They hacked the Black Mesa system and got rid of Gordon’s clearance for the retinal scanners etc so that Gordon could do minimal damage. After Gordon defeated Nihilanth the g-man realised that Gordon could be of use, he detained Gordon in stasis as he new he could not survive the portal storms and the 7-hour war. When the time was right the g-man released Gordon on City 17. He now seems to think of Gordon as passed his usefulness. He has put Gordon up for hire to the highest bidder. He knows that Gordon will not work for just an alien as what he has done he has done for the good of mankind. Through this the g-man is getting rid off, what he believes, is an asset that is of no further use and gaining more power. The g-man seems to be in contact with the higher-ranking resistance members e.g. Odessa, Isaac, Barney, Alyx and Eli. He is seen talking with Odessa, possibly telling him about Gordon coming, the gunship and possibly giving him the RPG launcher. He seems unsurprised on Gordon’s arrival “I’ll be with you in a moment”. Also he is only then giving instructions about the RPG launcher, which begs the question, why did he not teach them before. The g-man is the one who had Gordon in stasis and had Gordon’s suit, then Isaac seems to have Gordon’s suit. Alyx and Eli have a strange reaction to Breen saying that Gordon is up for hire “Don’t listen to him Gordon”. They do not seemed shocked at all, this indicates that they already knew, possibly the g-man informed them. Barney claims that the crowbar he gives Gordon his one from Black Mesa, this is possibly a link between the resistance and the g-man. Also instead of being surprised by Gordon’s arrival Isaac and Barney are not surprised by Gordon’s arrival, merely that they did not receive warning. So who told them he was coming.
Gonarch
These are the queen bees of headcrabs. They produce headcrabs like crazy and are very strong. It is very powerful and is a force to be reckoned with and will protect its lair fiercely if provoked. Their name also reveals things about their nature. Anything that is ‘gon-’ has to do with reproduction and ‘arch’ means a leader. So a gon-arch is a reproducing leader.
Farther Gregori
A priest that has sworn to lead his ‘congregation’. He trusts in God and will not give up on his people. He is killing the mawmen to release the people from their torment. He knows that they are being controlled against their will “I think no less of thee”. He remembers his people as they were “I remember your true face”. He has been asked by the resistance to leave Ravenholm “They call me crazy”. He is somewhat fanatical and has even self-inflicted a scar on his hand in the shape of a cross.
Gunship
Another one of the Combines synth forces. A powerful force with its machine gun and disintegration laser. Seemingly aquatic before assimilation.
