My friend just bought a new computer. It's a nice one:
XP 2400+, 512 DDR RAM, GeForceFX 5200 128Mb Ram and 80Gb. But for some strange reason his computer can't handle Halo very well. It runs extremely slow, even on 640x480 and that can't be right....can it?
I've got a XP 1700+, 512DDR RAM and a Geforce3 Ti 128MB Ram and it runs like butter on a pan.
We've tried using the latest patch on Halo, but that doesn't help, we've tried the latest patch on his videocard, but that doesn't help either.
Got any ideas? Please...

ye i heard Halo is like that.***ns shit on new computers..and good on old..strangeee

thats messed...they need to fix a few things then......that sux

He's got a crapier video card than you do. He-he.

Did he instal Windows on the new HDD which he bought, or he just put the old HDD inside the comp without reinstaling windows? Because I saw a few smart-asses who were too lazy and thought they are clever.

The FX 5200 is a crap video card, in the same league as the GF 4 MX series. But it is a Direct X 9 complient card, so Halo may recognise this ( i don't know this, i am just using logic) and run the DX 9 features. Unfortunately, the 5200 can't cope with them in most games.

Halo is just shit anyway, throw the thing away.

Thats not a very nice thing to say dedalus... Btw, isn't it spelled Deadalus?

for the millionth and final time..yes i know how it's spelt (and it's not Deadalus as you say it is). Daedalus is the classic spelling. why have i dropped the a? who gives a crap. i like it as Dedalus, looks a lot better.

and Halo is pretty shit. i don't know how people can still rant and rave about it today. it's showing it's age very badly and Halo 2 just looks the same but with a few nicer textures. hackneyed gameplay, cheesy storylines, and a big **** off crosshair that stops you from seeing what you're shooting. i hate Halo.

why did it even take halo so long to put on PC??...it was already on x-box....i dont get it

I'm guessing the long wait for the PC port was due to Microsoft squeezing out every penny they could from the x-box version. It really isn't a great game anyway, even at release it was just average, nothing special. In fact in the middle of the game things go from average to crap with you just blasting away the same enemies in the same levels over and over again. It's amazing what the hype machine can do for a game.

Well the fun thing is that I don't give a flying rats ****ing ass about what you think of the game. I asked why I runs so extremely poor on a fairly new computer.

I'm running a 9700, and my general specs are beyond your friends computer, yet I had the same problem. My FPS would regularly drop at random times, and it was really irritating.

I'm running on a GeForce 4 MX440 and it runs fine :) Try the video options, there's an option that goes "30FPS/Vsync/No Vsync" or something, change to Vsync OFF and it should run a bit better, I think. Something like that ^^

Hmmm... I have a GeForce 4 Ti 4200 128mb with latest patch and everything and I am running 1028x768 with full detail and it runs like my best friend. Well, I don't know my friend. Very strange.

We've tried that and it doesn't help

As the FX5200 is a directx 9 compliant card (barely...) halo is recognising this and adding loads of pixel shader 2 effects to the game. However the Geforce FX line of cards are not very good at handling the 2.0 Pixel shader and the since the FX5200 is a piss poor slow card, using Pixel shader 2.0 cripples its performance.

DirectX 8 cards like the GF3 and GF4 however only support version 1.1 and 1.4 of the pixel shader standard depending now how old they are so halo only uses the graphics coded by bungie for the Xbox which also uses version 1 of the Pixel shader....

To force your card to use version 1.4 of the Pixel shader add -use14 to your short cut. If you wish to increase the games performance a little more then add the -use11 command to your shortcut instead and remove the -use14

hope that helps

Oh and tell your friend to take back that card to the man who sold it him and use it to beat him over the head with it....

Halo will not run good on any computer that exists today. So I'm told.

Yeah I was told it was something to do with Halo being primarily a DX8 game.

I actually forced it into DX8 too...and it still bogged down. (Although I did gain some frames.)

/meh got an 3000Xp w/ 9700 pro and the demo ran as smooth as silk... on the exterior parts of the map at least.

Get it indoors and once the plasma starts flying the framerate starts to visibly stutter. I can only think Gearbox slapped flash shaders on *all* the walls without considering the consequences. That combined with some really boring interior level design made me give up the idea of getting the full thing. Chrome meanwhile, looks twice as pretty and runs smooth as.

Which brings me onto a second rant: one thing I'd love to see in futuristic FPSs is decent assault rifles -- generally they get reduced to useless short range burst effect weapons in the game we've seen. Halo, HL, Chrome, Deus Ex -- all feature assault rifles that are out-ranged and out-performed by today's guns. Makes you wonder why Gordon, the Master Chief, et al. aren't using the AKs and so on found in OpFlash instead of the crap they have forced on them. I know it gets done in the name of balancing the weapon options but it is a fairly stupid idea; that in the future weapon designers will have less clue than they do today...

Halo sucks. The only reason I'd want it on my computer is to kick everyones asses who thinks xbox is superior....but I guess that would be stooping to their level. Actually I don't knwo if the PC version can connect to an Xbox.

runs silkysmooth on my PC even on the indoor sections.... but then again i do have the fastest directx 8 based card ever made the ti4600. :E

Guys, why waisting money on Halo, Go and buy COD.

Download Halo now for free from Bittorrent sites. or IRC Sites.

I can't believe your buddy is even able to run Halo with only 128mb of RAM. His comp has got to be page-filing like crazy. If he's only got one stick of RAM he's not even running DDR would also seriously hindering his performance. I'd recommend getting a second stick of identicle 128mb RAM and running it in DDR mode with the first stick.

It's his geforce that has 128mb. Take a look at that first post again. He has 512DDR ram.
I'm up there with the guys blaming the Directx9 effects. nVidia really screwed up with their latest generation of cards. The FX series is crap. I'm still using my Ti4200, and the demo runs fine. And I only have 128Mb of ram on a 1.5ghz processor, way below frank's specs. Frank, if you read this, use the shortcut parameter they gave you. It should work.

Ehm...it's his videocard that's got 128Mb ram :)

Thanks! I'll tell right now!

Im running halo on a Barton 2500+, 512Megs of ram and a Sapphire Radeon 9800 nonpro. I used the -run20 command in the shortcut, and in lan when i'm alone, i manage about 50 fps. Before that, i tried -run 11 and 14 without any perfomance gain. Kinda low. Haven't tried it in singleplayer, but according to my setup it should run like water. Like every other game i've played. BTW, is the fps higher in singleplayer than in lan? I turned off Vsync.

heheh. Halo doesent have the problem with all new computers.
Mine runs it without fault

~But then I aint really supprised.
It is a 3.2ghz, 1024mb DDR ram, 9800 pro TANK of a machine!

Yes that was shameless showing off. But I don't care. Because I love this PC. Its teh shizzle!!!

Like this?
If "yes", well then all I can say is that it doesn't work. According to him it's still the same.

I don't have the full version, but the demo used to lag. Then I realized it was trying to run my monitor at a higher refresh rate than it actually can, so I changed that option, now it's just dandy most of the time.

Runs fine on my 9800XT... Halo is NOT processor dependant. I've got a godlike video card, yet my proc is only 1.53. (AMD 1800+) and an old ass 512 stick of PC2100. Halo is video card dependant from what I see.

I liked halo...and got awsome FPS, 60-100 at max details, 1280x960 res.

768MB DDR PC 2100, Radeon 9800np, 2.0ghz XP 2600+

Best soulutions I've found to maintaining a stable framerate for this Classic is:

Add to the command line -use 14 (massive performace increase) Lower your screen depth to 16bit and play in 800 x 600.

I see you've made a space between "use" and "14".... it that the way it's suppose to be or what?
C:\Games\Halo\halo.exe -use14 = wrong?
C:\Games\Halo\halo.exe -use 14 = right?

no space

and try -use11

also try buying a fkin decent card because as ive said before and i will say it again.... the FX5200 is an utter test tube full of dog wank juice....
