How are we supposed to help if you don't tell us your PC specs, the game you are trying to run it with, and at least what kind of bloody controller you have.

Try this if you don't understand I'll post a problem, and you try to solve it:

"hey i just got a new vcr, but i dont no how to program the channels or set it to record the powerpuff girls next week

can some one help me please!"

Ready? Annnnndddddd go.

No idea? not enough info?

Exactly.

Come back with some helpfull info, so we can start again.

Way to over-react. This guy basically wants to know how to start going about getting a controller working. That doesn't need full specs and even the controller's brand to be disclosed.

The two answers to the question:
1) Follow this document

2) Unless you have some kind of major physical reason for using a joypad (no desk or space for Mouse / Keyboard), there is really little point in using a Joypad. Mouse and Keyboard is simply better for First Person Shooter games. It just takes a little learning if you're not familiar. The reason why Valve keeps joypad functionality hidden is because people simply don't want it.

Edit: 2) will save you a lot of pain in the long run, because you'll inevitably come up with some question about a problem you have getting the joypad to work and none of us will have the answer, because we all use Mouse and Keyboard.

It does matter. From the tiny amount of info he gave, it doesn't even sound like he has the thing installed, doesn't know how to assign keys to it, or much else for that matter. Some brands (Saitek for example) have software that allows you to assign keys to the joypad (assuming it is a joypad- he didn't even say that) independantly of any game, thus over-riding the keyboard. Advice on how to set up that controller would be different to setting up a different brand, or even a different Saitek model. And there are plenty of other brands that ship with different software, drivers, etc.

If someone posted "help! i cant get my program to run!", you would ask for PC specs, and what bloody program it was, etc wouldn't you? I certainly hope so.

Same thing.

Never heard of POWER WAVE.

Make sure you have installed the drivers though. I never play FPS with a joystick/pad, so someone else will have to help with HL2 controller support for you. At least you have given some usefull info now though.

Look kid, kupoartist already posted a link to a page that will help with your problem. If you post a thread asking for help, the least you can do is read the replys. What you need to do is click on this link (The one kupiartist posted) and read through it. Once you've done that, come back if you have other questions.

sorry i didnt explain myself correcly i used the link given to me but i am still unable to use my controller to its full. in the mouse tab in the options menu in HL2 there is a option saying to enable joystick and i enabled it and all it alows me to do with the analoge that is on my controller is to look around the place but i still cant use any of the other buttons eg. shoot, sprint, zoom etc.

Like I said earlier, your problem now is that no-one has the foggiest idea beyond posting a link to someone else's FAQ what you should do. Joypads and PC First Person Shooters are a totally unknown quantity, because there is no real point to them whatsoever. My advice to you is to give up on the Joypad because even if it was a better way of playing the game, you're never going to come across anyone who actually played it that way.

It's pointless us knowing the make of the controller, because the only help out there for joypads under source is "one-size fits all". The contoller's make gives us no kind of bearing on a question of this kind either. Why do you post in help threads just to shout people down, when it's clear that you have no kind of idea of an answer to a problem even in its most basic state? You don't even have the rudimentary intelligence to google search for a name when someone reveals it to you after you've shouted at them demanding it! By searching instead of shouting, you'll find that a power wave is a PS2 controller-style controller and guess what: knowing this doesn't shed light on an inch of the problem.

Why the hell should I google something for someone else? I just pointed out that giving as much info / specs etc as you can, when you want help with something, is common sense? Are you stupid enough to argue that point too? I never made any claim to be able to (or want to) solve this problem, instead I gave some advice about posting a problem on a forum, and pointed out why.

Some controllers over-ride the keyboard, so if you know what type it is, you can learn how to use the software that came with it to replace things like w,s,a,d (or whatever you want)with buttons on the controller, THEN start your game, and off you go with the controller. But, as you put it "you don't even have the rudimentary intelligence" to grasp the basic concept of this, do you? Software and controllers like this are specifically designed for games that don't support, (or don't have good support) for controllers in any way.

But I'm going to guess that you still won't understand it.

So, did guys hear that U.S. soccer team did make to the World cup (FIFA)?
Wow! That’s good news.

How’s the New Zealand team doing? Never mind, you Beer-Heads play cricket then get drunk and play Rugby.

Rugby, Cricket, and beer, are for men and boys who like to touch other men and boys.

Bourbon, Motorsport, and Ice Hockey are more manly, and far less of a "brokeback mountain" style.

Go Kimi Raikonnen, by the way. He shall decimate all. Eventually. This weekend should hopefully see a return to form.

All very well and good, but in the future, you could try and work on your delivery just a smidgin? You crucify people the minute they step in the door.

Motorsport and ice hockey are more manly than rugby? Have you ever seen rugby? Have you ever seen motorsport or ice hockey come to that? Motorsport is fun and all, but its not what I would call manly. As for ice hockey, its about the most homosexual sport ever made. Every time they have a "fight", what actually happens is that they push each other once and start taking off their clothes.
