HL2 - New species of headcrab

Primal fears? Damn right I'm scared of a hideous crab-goatse hybrid leaping at my face from a corner of a darkened room.

i think the more variety the better. im not sure about the gonome aproach though. i liked how they were hard, but the slower moving creepier regular versions were much cooler i think. the zombies were my favorite enemies, and the ones we have seen from hl2 look even more fun. id like to see different kinds of zombies that resulted from the different types of headcrabs, but id prefer them not to be the gonome. they tried too hard to make them scary by just making them faster.

The gonome wasn't a different kind of zombie, it was the further mutation of the normal zombie. And those things scared the **** out of me when i first encountered them. HL2 will have the next step, I'm sure they've got something nice in store for us.

I would like to see fast head crabs and perhaps some more clever ones, that hunt in packs.

SSHSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.................

**

Basicly there are...........

**

Bit obvious, that. I mean, I didn't even need to highlight. Luckily, I don't care about a teensy spoiler like that ;)

yeah, im glad it wasnt too shocking, b/c despite all my efforts to not highlight where people put spoiler stuff, most of the time i do highlight at least part of it.

I really hope the Genome or whatever that "further stage" of zombie was called. It was utterly sh*t.

Well...the Genome's weren't the work of Valve........those things were Gearboxes' stupid little creation.

It was a nice idea......but they didn't put it out very well. The way those things ran at you was just stupid looking. And its hard to see how the zombie could go from being a skinny shell of a human, to a big bulky strong thing.

Thankfully Valve knows how to make some freakn' awsome and scary zombies.....

HL2 is going to scare the crap out of me and I'm going to love it soooo much.

i think so too. maybe their new versions of zombies arent going off of gearboxes, which is what i hope to be true.

They aren't going off of gearboxes zombies. Its all just Valves stuff.

Believe me........its good.

Good lord is it good..........

Are we speaking from beta experience, dear boy?
I do hope you know what you're talking about 'cause the genomes were sh*t.

Not experience.........but I've seen what they look like.................and like I said........................... good lord.......... IT IS GOOD.

And there are some other things that aren't zombies, but look 1000x scaryer.

The kind of thing that you know will give you nightmares. Seriously.

And this is just from pictures............I cant imagin what its like to see these things in action going after you.

Nothing like OP4 and all the stupid crap Gearbox made up.
Gearbox sucks..................they screwed up Halo for the pc too........ bastards.

you give me hope with you zombie annd other talk. i loved the zombies, and if theres going to be even creepier enemies thats a good thing

Damn all of the sudden it seems I'm the only one who liked the gonomes. I feel left out now, although that run was pretty gay I'll admit, and I think it would've been better if they vomitted acid on you or something instead of throwing it at you.

agreed. i just didnt like how they were so dramatically different from such a cool enemy to begin with.

OP4 Was an ok game...........but compaired to HL1......It just didn't cut it.

Some of their "new features".....weren't all that great.
I'll list my complaints........... (because I'm bored.... :( )

1. The Ropes.......Yay.....you can climb and swing on ropes......that makes this a whole different game . Not a usefull feature.

2. "Commanding" Your army buddies. A neat idea.....but it was done horribly. The welder could get through locked doors....... And it wasn't ever a big deal to get him to it.....because he was always like one room away from it. The medic could heal you......but so could the scientists in HL1. The army guys only seemed usefull in very small areas. Then you just left them behind. Or they died because of how much they sucked at shooting things 2 feet from them.....or their poor navagation ability. Or the fact that sometimes they just wouldnt move.....

3. I know they were doing the whole "this guy you are dosn't know anything, so you don't know anything" kind of thing. But here you have this whole other alien race for NO freaking reason......why the hell couldn't we have fought the aliens that were there in the first game......like all the other army guys were fighting.....
I'll admit it could have gotten boring seeing the same bad guys over and over.......but this wasn't a new game......it was just an add on..........and they were trying to use the same HL story.
I seriously hope none of OP4's story comes to play in HL2.

The one good thing about OP4 was the weapons.
You got a real sniper rifle. The barnical.....not all that usefull all the time....but still cool.
And they had alot of the HL weapons.......which was GOOD.
It made for a pretty good DM. I still like HLDM more though.
I'm pretty millitant when it comes to how I like my games.

I really like that Star Wars, kind of thing where.......there are TONS of games and TONS of books that deal with side stories and stuff.........but it all has to go through Lucas to be sure it follows the story corectly.
I hope to work on a single player game for HL2 that I want to really really go with the story.
But I can't really do much yet since HL2 isn't out............and I need the info from that :( .

I just didn't much like what Gearbox did with the HL story. That and the mechanics of their game.......the way levels were put together......how they set things up.....it was just way way to predictible.........you knew something was going to be right around the corner, or that you had to do this in order to get to the next area.
And the fact that it was half the length of HL.

Thats my late night ramblings....... good luck finding the point in all that.
Now I wanna play op4.......

and hl2 :(

Well, PCGamer said the Barnacle grappling hook thingy is back, so I actually think that there is going to be some OP4 references in there...

And I liked the Gonomes, so :P.

I mean, heck, they turned bulky by eating dead bodies... the food gave them the fuel to begin metamorphosing...

I loved Op4. there were some major gripes about it, but overall it was fantastic.
I thought the ropes were quite a good idea really. It's true that the squad/buddy AI could have been improved (ESPECIALLY concerning "friendly fire"), but it was lots of fun.
The new male assassins were a bit disappointing (Oh, right, you're marines with gimp costumes... 'kay)
Race-X were there because, as more dimensional ruptures or portals or whatever, things became more unstable, and this other race of aliens were able to come through too. The reason that towards the end there were bits of Xen-esque archtiecture in BMRF was for the same reason. I wasn't a huge fan of them, mainly the Vortigaunt. And the final boss bit was really underwhelming. Towards the end, the Xen aliens stopped appearing and that was, I assume, because Gordon had killed Nihilanth and thus destroyed their ability to teleport, but not Race-X's.
The new weapons were veeery cool and I loved some of the new soldiers (especially the black guy with the M-249 and the welder)
The set-pieces were generally just as good as HL's (the beginning was fantastic)
And in fairness, the reason it was half the length of HL1 was because it was an expansion, not a whole new game.

Brian's right about the Barnacle weapon (although apparently it's going to be all spruced up and different... Hmmm.) However he's wrong about the genomes. They were sh*t. It's a scientific fact.

I also liked OpFor, even if Race X wasn't explained very well. Only thing I didn't understand was the last boss...that made absolutely no sense to me, at all. So, every alien race has to have one seriously big monster that can apparently create teleportation holes at will? :| Other than that, I had no problems with commanding my fellow soldiers, and I felt the story added to the HL experience.

I neither hated nor liked the Gonomes, but they make sense to me. They start bulking up as they eat, like Brian said, and they also begin to get faster and have the ability to throw acid from their chest maw. I think the reason they're faster is because they've probably made more of a 'connection' with their human host's body, which allows them to utilize a standard human's speed. And I think the acid thing is due to them evolving towards becoming a Gonarch. So whether stupid or not, they make sense.

What is thier "chest maw"????????

I seriously remember a long time ago..........the zombies in HL1 were called Maw Men.......... I never new why....and now no one ever calls them that.

And I really liked the name Maw Man.....it just sounds alot better than zombie.

[edit] WOoooooo!!! Post number 888!!!!!! The mark of the very rounded beast!!!!!!!!!! [/edit]

Maw = mouth.

That big gaping wound that's really a mouth on their chest. Hence, chest maw/maw men. :)

Cool...that makes sense....

I'm going to try and find out where it was called that.

Yes, I remember that too... Mawmen...

I also remember seeing them eating a dead body at some point in HL... they were making scooping motions with their claws towards their "maw", so they must be able to digest things...

The "making a better connection with the host body" idea makes sense, too...

I personally think that the acid thing might be because they can reach directly into their stomachs (Ick!)...

And people seem to be of two opinions about whether they can evolve into Gonarchs... I reckon they can, otherwise what's the point? If they can mutate hands into claws and chests and ribcages into mouths, them they can certainly mutate legs and arms into the gonarchs huge chitinous claws...

Okay, I've gone and found the original GameSpy info that I believe may have started this discussion about multiple headcrab species...

Mods: If this is against the rules, I won't complain if you take it down. It's less than 5% of the Gamespy article, I'm pretty sure...

For those that don't know, they're talking about the Zoo, which was a series of demo rooms containing enemies shown off to previewers from mags and sites

Gamespy said:
The first area contained updated versions of some of the alien lifeforms we met during the first Half-Life, including three varieties of headcrabs, three different types of zombies, and an updated bullsquid. Will the dog-like houndeyes return? They weren't on display, and at the moment it looks like they won't be appearing in Half-Life 2. Another important creature in the zoo: the "ant lion," which was shown off during a number of demos throughout the day, and will actually fight on your side in a few areas.

The second area we went through showed off a few other new enemies, starting with a "turret class" camera bot, a flying headcrab and an assassin reminiscent of the female ninjas from Half-Life. We also got to look at some of the City 17 personnel, referred to as Combine soldiers, as well as the mech-like suits that some of them wear.

So: Three varieties of Headcrab and Zombie are confirmed... but did they somehow mistake the manhacks or scanners for the "Flying Headcrabs"?

Note they also mention that some of the Combine have some sort of power armour/mech suits...

It's possible. Although I'm not really sure how they could have; the manhacks don't look a thing like headcrabs. Then again, they were moving so fast in the video that when I was watching it, I couldn't really tell what they were. A friend of mine on IRC thought they were organic, rather than mechanical (as we now know them to be), and took to calling them, "Razor fruits," because he said they looked like some kind of fruit with blades attached. But never did I see them looking like a headcrab, and if this zoo demo just had the creatures on display, I don't assume they'd be buzzing around wildly. They were probably just going through their idle animations behind bars, or glass enclosures, whatever they were in.

As a side note, this thread got stuck in my head last night and I ended up dreaming about headcrabs. :O Not pleasant, but I pictured the flying ones in my head as being normal headcrabs with two translucent wings, like flies, coming out of their backs. And their wings beat hummingbird fast, but every once-in-awhile they'd have to rest, and would drop to the ground to pursue you on foot.

I will be sorely disappointed now if that's not in HL2. :(

Edit: BTW, if anyone's up for discussing more headcrab lifecycle stuff, I'm always up for that. I love that stuff. :)

I seriously doubt they could mistake the Manhack for something else.

You've got a compleatly metal thing....that everyone has seen before......I'm pretty sure they know what they're talking about when they say "flying headcrab"

I'm really happy too.....because there wasn't anything about them in any of the beta stuff I read.......so i'll be surprised :)

I really doubt anyone could mistake a manhack for something else. I mean, a headcrab doesnt even remotely resemble a manhack. Unless the guy who wrote the article was on acid or something, I don't see how you could confuse the 2.

Also about the gonome I agree the reason it is faster and all is because the headcrab has a better handle on the hosts nervous system. The crab is actually fused to the host in this stage, where in the zombie it is only on there with its claws and whatever is in its mouth.

Well... IGN, I believe, mistook the Strider for a giant Headcrab...

And I must say that I'll be somewhat dissapointed if the Gonome doesn't reappear...

If we're seeing the next evolution after the gonome, we'll probably see the gonome.

Any speculation on what it might be? I'm thinking maybe it will develop a tougher exterior, becoming slightly bullet-proof.

Well... the Gonome already had a huge torso... so I'd say that would keep developing...

The mouth had gotten bigger between the Mawman and Gonome stages, hadn't it? That might develop, or maybe even begin inverting into the Gonarch egg-sac...

The skin could get harder, if the Gonome truly is evolving into a Gonarch... as the Gonarch's exoskeleton was mostly bulletproof...

The claws might further develop... and I'd say the clothing, by now, would be ill-fitting and very ragged...

Hadn't the Gonome developed some sort of green blobs on its back? Could they be rudimentary Gonarch eyes?

NO GENOMES!!! THEY WERE CRAP!!! AAAAARRRRRGH!
<dies>

No, just most people. ;)

Flying headcrabs? You have got to be kidding me. I suppose it could be possible to do them well....but...I doubt it somehow.

Brian Damage said:
Not everyone thinks so, el Chi...
Well unfortunately those people are wrong.
To me, at least, they just seemed so out of place and not as well thought out as most of the other enemies. They were silly and rubbish and just seemed out of place compared to the other beasties. It just seemed like they were trying to out-do Valve's design and cocked up big time.
Meh, I just hope they're not in HL2 because once again all the enemies we've seen seem well thought out. And the genome was crap.
Maybe the three different varieties of zombie are simply three different skins seeing as City 17 would have lots of differet-sized folks to turn into lots of different sizes of zombie. I'm pretty sure I read summat along those lines.
