I normally play HL2 in offline mode. I check forums and steampowered.com for news on updates.
I connect to steam, then let the updates finish then play HL2, only problem is if I leave Steam connected the game is unplayable. The sound is all over the place and the framerate drops to about 1 frame a week.
If I restart the game with steam in offline mode, all is good and speedy.
Does this happen to anyone else?

I do have bradband by the way so I dont think its my connection speed.
