I *HATE* doing outside scenes because it means making buildings and stuff to put around my people and i'm out of ideas of how to make it look good and not just desperate. How do other people manage to fill the space to stop the players from seeing past the map and to stop them from seeing the sky at ground level?

I need ideas and inspiration.

Thanks!

Yeah but it looks pretty dumb if the skybox is below the people.

I know. I've seen both of those pages before. What i want to know is what YOU people do to fill in background space. Screenshots and stuff would be appreciated too.

Just make a rock or wood wall at the edge of the map so you don't see the sky on the ground.

Buildings, large rocks, changes in elevation, vegetation, gates/walls, vehicles, debris. I think a good thing to keep in mind is that where the player can go and where the level ends are two different things. Adding little details outside the playable area of the level can add a nice layer of polish to your map. It helps immersion by making it feel more like a real place than a fenced in area to kill each other.

Get visual architectural references from Flickr.com, Google image search, etc. When you have references that you like the style of, reproduce the references in 3D.
