I uninstalled my AVG antivirus.

Hope this helps anyone else with the same issues (game hangs either on load (Retreiving server information) or mid game with steam.exe taking up 99% cpu).

Hm sounds interesting I got crashes on load and some random and I got AVG
Ok i will try to uninstal it :)
If it's work, Big thanks mate

Woah...I have AVG too, and I'll try playing with it off(ie shutting down all the relates processes in the Task Manager). If that works I'll uninstall it.

But since I'll be AV-less, does anyone know what's another good free antivirus program?

Please, if it works for you, submit a bug report so valve can fix this collision.

Correct. Losing your Anti Virus isn't a solution, it's a work around. Without Anti Virus..well, you know. Submit a bug report, and try to get another Anti-Virus ASAP. I hear Bit Defender is OK...but I only use AVG...

I shut down avg, same 'retrieving server info' system hang and same sound looping crash happening...

Deleting AVG worked for my crashes

I tried shutting down AVG with no success. I tried stop all processes related to AVG, still with no success. It wasn't until I deleted AVG did the crashes stop. Funny thing is I never had any problems with other steam products. Everything is working 100%. Now I have to choose another anti-virus program. Thanks for the suggestion.

as long as your not retarded you wont get a virus..
im at about 6 years running so far no problems.

How do you know?

Indeed, how do you know if you haven't scanned for viruses?

Also, I just realised something. When my brother use to own my computer, he didn't have AVG installed, and I experienced no crashes (except when someone spoke to me, it would crash the game but thats all fixed). And so when I bought his computer, I installed AVG and the crashes happened.

I hope this fixes it.

You have to UNINSTALL AVG! Closing it down and closing its processes doesn't stop its system services that are running. The services are what helps cause crashes. Believe me, I tried just disabling AVG, but it wasn't until I uninstalled it and switched to McAfee that my crashes stopped. (I also increased the paged pool size in the registry to fix the crashes).

Don't believe me? Here's the official Steam forum release about AVG:

If you aimed that at me, then I am well aware you have to uninstall it. I was just saying...

Sorry if that came off strong, but I was just trying to get the idea across to everyone.

Uninstalling is the only solution for the AVG problem.

I get all the hangs you discribe+ a hang after exiting the game but WTF is "sound loop"?

Anyway uninstallan'

omg.......why do you have to revive a thread??

do you not realize that this was problem in the beta before the game was released. does anyone pay attention to post dates anymore?

Sorry I fallowed a link to it! XD

Still a problem though because as soon as I switched to avast TF2 runs 100X better!
