I was watching the DX9 effects video for HL2 and i got to thinking the question that is this thread's title.

I am more interested in if there has been any screenshots of HL2 running on a <DX9 GPU and maybe even a video clip.

I find it very unlikely that there are any videos or screenshots since Valve wouldn't want to show their game at it's worst. But they do say HL2 will run on a <DX9 GPU, but that doesn't mean the game will look good ofcourse. So just how will HL2 look on a less than DX9GPU?

I'm guessing it'll look like HL1 on a DX6 card. That'd be wierd.

Well, since it appears that there will be no HDR in HL2 I doubt you'll even be able to tell a difference between a DX8 and a DX9 card, besides a performance increase of course.

Execpt for the whole HDR demo they did, showing all the HDR lighting bloom effects. If you close your eyes while playing there won't be any HDR... but not otherwise.

Actually VALVe did most people a favour by delaying HL-2. All those (or quite a few) with DX-8 cards back in September will be able to get a bran spanking new DX-9 card for the HL-2 release this summer.

VALVE did me a favor by waiting until i could upgrade :) Thanks Valve!

What do you mean waiting until you can upgrade? You would wait anyway even if they released it or not so foad.

i know of a person called Foad. But who cares 'part from him...

He got what he deserved, for being happy that the game was delayed... what a newb.

yeah, Asus posted that link a week ago or so.. and while its helpful in pointing out what will be available with different DirectX cards, its still going to be different actually seeing it..

i wish there were some side by side screen shot pics in different DirectX version cards so we can see the differences.. and those of us without a DX9 card can see the fancy stuff..

Yeah I also. Wait i do have a DX9 card why am I so interested?!

Oh yeah, i want to see if Valve can actually pull it off. HL2 on a DX6 card and still looking good? I really doubt it. It's good that they've tried to offer HL2 to a wider variety of gamers though. Very good.

we're see the basic things, the facial animations etc... just on 64mg cards, the textures will be on Low to get decent frame rates in battles... have you tried playing Far Cry on its lowest settings... i hope HL2 dont look That bad ! :(

True. :(

But then the picture is static - when it's in motion, we see all those sheens, and reflective surfaces.

in the DirectX 9, the water has correct light on it ? thats the only visible difference.

I'm going to try that right now. Can't imagine it being 'That bad !'. Interesting

Nice one lans. I see the major (if only) difference between 8.1 and 9 being the water, lighting and reflection effects.

When did VALVe say that HL2 in DX6 would still look good?

Also, I'm pretty sure that most of what we've seen is DX 8.1 stuff, or at least, stuff that could be done in DX8.1. Most of the DX9 stuff was probably in the DX9 vid...

Stuff you won't get on your DX8 card:

- Soft shadowing
- Character/entity bumpmapping
- Improved FSAA
- And if it's still there: HDR

And the shaders are just better in general on DX9

I upgraded for HL2 last year, (stupidly believing the sept 30th release date) so I bought a 9800pro... the card won't even run half-life2 because i'm getting an X800 XT Platinum Edition in a week... Thanks valve. :/

Who said the 9800pro would not run the game? Not everyone can afford the X800, heck people still have Voodoo 3 and other Dx.6 cards that should be minimum limit, even though they are obsolete. Valve would lose a heck lot of customers if HL2 could only run on a X800. Or were you saying that that was the intial reason for which you bought your 9800pro and didn't get to play hl2.

Or you just posted that to show off that you are buying a X800? :P

Yah man, it will run on 9800 Pro... :P I have one, but I'm not buying a new card for a long time.

I tried it this morning - 640x480, all other settings on low. Looked a bit like a cartoon.

That guy said that HL2 won't run on his 9800pro, because it probably isn't in his system anymore/won't be in his system when he gets HL2, so HL2 will not run on that card. But if the card was installed HL2 would run.

O, and yes he is just showing off. The showoff.

You can see that the rocks in the background of the DX9 shot have darker shadows - but yeh i had to look damn hard. They don't improve or detract from the scene much really, maybe a different shot would reveal more.

Wait maybe i was wrong - i checked quickly with photoshop - here's the actual difference from the pics.

if you cant see a blatant difference in the refraction of the light in the water, you must have shit in your eyes.

fullscreen both pics then quickly alternate between them... look at the water. its obvious.

i dont thik effects on textures and stuff is going to be that noticable, but its probably mainly performance increases.

You deserve it, for being so rich. I still have my 9700pro. It'll run Half-Life 2 fine, I hope. You don't see me whining. I don't have the money to get a new video card everytime they come out. Be happy.

it got a 9600 pro running on mine and i only have far cry as an uber game to match benchmark and it ran that game on highest settings fine (granted the rest of my comp is running 3.0 gigs and 1.0 gig ram) so the compensation is sweet. plus new card? now? ya right they are cranking new models out so fast now that there is no point to invest in one cause another new one will come out the second you get yours out of the box. shitty. too bad there are no cool games to play..
god damn it all those developers and nothing NOTHing worth the money to go and buy it. that just burns me up so much money and no freakin talent in most of the games.

Valve said HDR probably won't be in it. I hope it is though. Read the info from valve thread, gabe or whoever talks about it there.

VALVe mentioned several times about updating Half-Life 2's graphics in patches so most likely one of em will include HDR. I'd really like to see comparison screenshots of Dx6,7,8,9. They've never shown Half-Life 2 on a near minimum spec computer.

On more than a DX9 card with high res it will be so real your computer will digitize you into the game

oh yeah.........

When I said the card won't run the game, I meant the card I bought for Half-Life 2 won't be running Half-Life 2 on my machine because i'll have the X800 XT installed before I even get HL2. I didn't mean that a 9800 pro won't run HL2 (obviously).

I'm just annoyed that I upgraded when I didn't have to. I'm not rich either.

Why would you not see character bumpmapping on a dx8 card? I can see bumpmaps just fine on my dx8 card.
