Remorse: a strong feeling of guilt and regret

It's not even for the money that I feel remorse. The time I have spent here b****ing I could have spent making minimum wage somewhere and the game would have been paid by now.

The problem is that, well, I feel remorse. Maybe it is the Steam thing that has ruined the whole experience. I don't know what it is. Maybe I feel remorse because after waiting for 6 years this game was not what I wanted it to be.

Does anyone else feel like this?

no way,

I loved every second of the game, and the six years was worth the wait for me..

The game is incredible! I loved every second of it, and am in the middle of beating a second time. Once I get out of the shock I have been in since November 16, I will start drooling again at the hundreds of mods currently being made out their! And then there is CS:s... another great game. I love VALVe, I love steam, and I think now is great time in the world of video games.

I wonder what it is you were expecting Odysseus? I am not going to say this is the best game ever created by humankind, but it is well up there.

Did you enjoy the original?

There where some parts that dissapointed me. But the part that made me sad was when it actually ended... The game was so awesome in so many ways, then... "Time."

I honestly loved the game. Didnt have so many of those "whoops sudden death" times as HL1. I mean, a bunch of times a scripted event that was ment to kill a headcrab or person, would end up killing me. Like in the begining of the game after things go nuts and you crawl through that little vent into that room and the thingy explodes and falls on the headcrab. That must have killed me a few times in a row, even when I tried to avoid it. HL1 seemed to have had alot of trial and error.

Graphics where dandy, I ran the game in 10x7 res with everything on medium. At times I would dip down into, must have been the 15-20's of FPS but it was fairly smooth for the most part. (i fixed up CS:S and shanked most of the graphics for max preformance, but, i mean, who could ever do that to HL2?) I played the game in DX 8 and the game still looked awesome. I loved the citidel, omfg where those plasma balls cool looking.

The physics? Awesome. I loved messing around with them. From killing with them to killing myself with them. (that spinning fan that breaks in ravenholm? it shot off into the air and i was baffled for a second, only to have it come down on my head and kill me instantly) Paintcans = fun. Same with dog's ball and Saw blades. Gravity gun was a huge source of fun and awesomeness.

Ravenholm. This part was so awesome it deserves a paragraph of it's own. It was spooky, but not overly spooky. Those fast zombies where really what got to me. It was sort of like DooM done right. Dont get me wrong, doom was a good game and I was too wuss to even play it often, but this section was far more fun and even though it was just as creepy, I couldent stop.

AI was awesome. Blocked the door? Chucked gernades in the window. I never saw one stupid momment with the AI, unlike games like farcry. Yeah, that rock where half your body pokes out is an incredible hiding spot. Same goes for that palm tree.

Sounds where cool. Some weapons sounded a tad dinky and weak and I would have liked more music to go on in the heat of the action, but I was pleased here. I liked how you could hear the combine flatline.

ANTLIONS good god, I loved these critters. I dont know why but they where just so awesome. I loved watching them stick by me through all the hard times, and how they loved tearing somebody apart. How they loved to take bullets for me, how they loved to leap 50 feet into the air and cannonball into the water because I chucked some bugbait into the ocean. I thought these where the coolest allies in the game.

Some weird parts. Jumping. Felt like you jumped 1 foot in the air. Sprinting was not needed really since bunnyhoppping about doubled your speed. (damn did you move fast sprinting and hopping though) Weapons. Kind of lacking, I was expecting some more... I really was. Accuracy was a bit off with weapons, made it hard to kill somebody way in the distance with anything other than a crossbow or RPG. I mean, it would take maybe a 100+ shots because they spread out so much, and I thought the SMG in HL1 was bad...

Anyway, I loved the game. It was everything I had hoped for. Now im playing through HL2 on hard and im having just as much fun as the first time through. (except im not going through the entire game in 2 sittings :O)

The best FPS single player I have ever played, Period.

I loved the game. I just wish it was a little bit more trickier...But the MOD community and CS:S is what will keep this game alive.

You've also waited 6 six years for, at last check, 431 (free) mods using the latest and greatest in technology :)

this is the start of a bright future in gaming, at this time, with the tecknology we have, valve and all the creators have done the best , and like to thank them, for a good few weeks of gaming..lol

You cant really count the entire 6 years, we didnt even know of its existance until 18 months ago.

Maybe you feel remorse because you have forgotten that Half Life 2 is just a computer game and you maybe should consider getting a life?

Remorse? You don't know what real remorse is unless you bought Doom 3  (unfortunately, I have ;()

EDIT: the cruel irony of the word 'doom' changing into a big 'BUY IT NOW' advert :)

Edjut: Odysseus See Odysseus
Odysseus: Some lil under-15-years-of-age kid who begged his parents to get him HL2 for months, finally got it, parents bashed the sh*t outta him cause it wasn't wat he proclaimed it to be and now wants to blame Steam n Valve. For further reference, see n00b, cry-baby or delinquent

Personally I love the game and have had zero problems with Steam. As for the stuttering, it only happens from the menu screen when I choose "Load".... stutters about 5 times quickly and thats the end of it., doesnt happen in game (3200+ C0 hammer, DFI UT 250GB, 9800 Pro 128, 1GB Corsair).

While the story raised questions, for the most part I understood the subtle hints left scattered through the game. As for searching for the hints I love that stuff, I love open maps that let you search around.

Like I said, zero problems with Steam. Bought HL2 through Steam, unlocked it at 7AM EST the morning after release, Played it offline, online..... no waiting, no problems. I know Im not the only zero problem person but I also know theyre are people that have had major problems so I can see how Steam might have taken the fun out of the game for some people. I mean Valve has every right to protect their properity... they spent years and tons of cash making it so they should protect it but lets be honest, other then a few morons using a stolen CC or a "special" CD key it really hasnt stopped the majority of the people playing a "steamless" version of HL2. I dont mind jumping through hoops if the end product is worth it but some people dont..... especially when their neighbor is playing the "Steamless" version nightly with less problems then their legal version.

The game has incredible gameplay but is missing serious plot elements. It treats us like we understand what is going on. We start the game having no clue what is going on and little is explained before we are involved with Kleiner and Alex and working with the resistance. They never really connect Half-Life with the sequel, except for some characters from the first. How are they connected? Where did the Combine come from? If Valve advanced the plot a little more, I think the game could have truly been 100%, or much closer, even though some already rate it close.

Odysseus...
This is your second thread saying you didn't like it. Forget about Hl2 and move on. But to answer your question, no i did not regret buying Hl2 at all. I'm on my second playing, and i enjoy it even more than my first.

I agree. You have the right to not like the game, but you don't need to depress and annoy everybody else in the process. Okay, it was disappointing for you, now move on with your life. It'll be okay... ;)

Agreed, I do feel remorse for Doom3. Not HL2, even though I had to start it over right after finishing the Ravencroft level because it would not recognise the saved game after reinstalling Windows XP.

I loved the game AND the ending. It ended exactly how it needed to.

I honestly would have paid double what I paid if that's what they were asking for. Not only do we get a killer game, we also will get countless amazing "FREE" mods from the community.

I've got my eye on this one for now...

I was not trying to annoy or depress anyone! I just can't reconcile the fact that many people say this game was great when in fact it wasn't. I don't care if you can pick a can of paint and throw it against a wall, or kill your enemies with it; if the game doesn't have a good story it won't cut it for me.

Now I know I might be comparing apples to oranges here, but if we are going to judge the game by its graphics alone, aren't the GTA graphics much better than HL's ? GTA looks more impressive to me.

I loved the game. I am not lying when I say this is/was the most wanted thing for me this century. (I just turned 19 in November) When I noticed an amazon.com box outside on my porch (mailbox is too small) I tore open the box, ran inside leaving my dog outside. delicately, yet speedily cut the sticker holding the game box closed. put in CD1 of install. Started installing it. After that, I went out and got the dog which ended up in the neighbors yard, and picked open the shipping box which I tor open with my teeth and hands. after defragging, tweaking, more tweaking, registry cleaning, and a couple other things... I played. Iplay and played and played. 14 hours in one day. 11AM to 4AM (that's 17hrs, but I did do housework, and ate). I spent nine hours on it the next day. Done. After the ending. I felt no victory. I beat it, and I was ecstatic, but I felt no joy or happiness for completing it. more like "wow. it's over. That was great. wow. just wow." then like five minutes of dead silence, my mind taking it all in again. So many holes. So many questions. It sounds so noobish, but I wanted to look for more files inside the *.pak's or whatever to see if they left any clues behind. Dissapointed? No. more like an empty void in my chest due to a..........(trying to find a word).......... a lack of gratification (even this can't describe it) I do love the game. I enjoy it. (going through second time now) but I almost feel like I haven't learned anything new in a sense.... Whatever. I will keep this one around for my kids to play in ten years or whatever.

Don't you mean... Dim 3?

I felt absolutely no remorse about purchasing Half-Life 2, and I spent $100 on the Gold edition from Steam. This game has been a true religious experience for me, and I loved every second. It's the greatest game ever created, in my opinion and in many others, and I will play it again and again and again.

I think the problem for a lot of people is that it's so much better than other games that people find themselves comparing it to real life and movies without realizing it, thus making it seem worse.

It's incredible.

Well, it took me 3 sittings to complete the game. I guess I am not a hardcore gamer like yourself ;)

Done. After the ending. I felt no victory. I beat it, and I was ecstatic, but I felt no joy or happiness for completing it....more like an empty void in my chest due to a..........(trying to find a word).......... a lack of gratification

Yeah I guess that's how I felt too, but in my case, the bad ending (among other things) ruined the whole experience. You give me a better ending and perhaps I wouldn't be so negative about this game.

That's really too bad... but it's still worth the money for all the mods.

Ok people, lets stop playing Hl2 right now. Hl2 sucks, it has now become a fact.

Yeah i agree. I must also say, Super Mario Bros has better shadows then Doom 3.

I don't understand why you peepz keep talking about the mods.

I remember this SS Darkstar mod or whatever and it sucked big time, and it was supposed to one of the best mods... If I wanted to play crappy games I would be playing Soldier of Fortune...

Yeah i agree. I must also say, Super Mario Bros has better shadows then Doom 3.

Half Life 2 has the best lighting/shadows ever! Therefore, HL2 is my favorite game ever!

I'm a little... I don't know, set back that I could get just as good, if not even better textures in Half-Life 1 (at a slower FPS rate, of course).
It feels like the old engine, just more advanced. GRaphics and how the maps are are pretty much old school.

I think it's gonna take a while until someone dishes out a game with a better graphics engine than DooM 3, bu then again, DooM 3 lags INDOORS at 640x480, whereas I can play HL2 outdoors with little to no FPS reduction at 1200x900.

The game lives up to today's video card standards, while DooM 3 is more of a step in the future.

But still, DooM 3 wont spawn as many games as Half-Life 2 will, which is why I bought HL2 in the first play. Never expected anything from HL2 itself as a game.

Same here. Best game of all time.

Odysseus... seriously, why do you even post here? Please i beg to know.

We're talking about them because a half-life 1 mod became the most popular online FPS game of all time and i've been playing it constantly for the last 4 years. IF a Hl2 mod can me something close to that it's going to be awesome

As for Half-life 2 i absolutely loved it. It gave me so much more than all the other FPS games over the last 6 years. Now that Valve have set a new standard everyone will have to match it. Simple yet awesome ideas like the gravity gun will become standard feature in games soon. Already iD-wemakegameengines-software is copying the idea directly.

We'll see more FPS games using physics for gameplay puzzles/features
We'll see far more devotion to character facial animation and interaction.

Yes indeed. Those sort of things could have easily been in Far Cry, Doom3, Painkiller but for some reason the developers just show a little too much hesistancy in trying different things, unfortunately!! Valve is the only company really pushing the boundaries of the FPS experience.

This is a matter of opinion. You are coming off very arrogant.

As for your second claim.. if you think GTA has better graphics than HL2, then I think you are a troll. Compare the two below.. it isn't even close. Of course, I love the GTA games, because graphics aren't that important to me.

HL2 = http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2004/reviews/914642_20041112_screen085.jpg
