15 seconds infact, and it came out pretty bad.
(brag alert) Since I got my new computer, I wanted to record me playing HL2 without lag. And I did slightly, but WMM made it all blurry and horrid and minging and disgusting and rank and smelly.

Full of win.

Is it normal that I use the exact same tactics when going through that part of the game?

Use Source recorder for all Source games, of course. No doubt about it.

I used the Windows Movie Maker given on Windows XP SP1, do you think that is what caused the quality to be so bad?
Oh, and about the win, it was sarcasm.

youtube is what made the quality bad. i bet if u go run the original video file using windows media player it will look at least 10 times better than the youtube version.

he either needs to lower the resolution of the video or change the file type.

I always destroy that barrel (since about 3rd playthrough), I use the same tactic when they use explosives to destroy the door at the top of the staircase in Ep. 1. Always tugs my heart-strings:upstare:

Sadly, it was like that when I did run it in Windows Media Player. YouTube just made it worst.

it's not youtube, its microsofts wm MAKER!!

Yes, we are well aware that Microsoft made Windows Movie Maker. He was just saying how uploading it to YouTube made it even worst.

There should be rendering options in whatever editing software you're using, from very low quality settings to very high. If you selected .avi output (with essentially lossless render) it would look a lot better.

I've never used the Source recorder so I don't know if that contributed to the quality, but a good workaround for any video recording, assuming you have a video card with a second video out cable, is to connect to a camcorder or some other device (via S-Video, for example), then in turn capture that video in MovieMaker. The resulting video should be very high quality.

The involvement of YouTube though is, as others have stated, a whole different problem. ;)

To my knowledge you don't actually record anything in .bik format, just convert to it from other file formats. For example, you can record an .avi video by whatever means, convert it to .bik without compression, and have a very high quality resulting BINK video. The file size would be very large however, typically one MB for every two seconds of video.
