I need suggestions before playing HL2, again

I have played HL2 a handful of times, and I want to play it again. Is there any cool mod I could apply to this game before I get started? Something that would make the game more interesting. Like having more weapons, or more levels, etc.

Substance was fun, but some things got annoying. Like how he placed Striders everywhere.
