This is a group i have been following for many years now. They have been developing a new game engine based around the principle of procedural generation. The blog post shows some current screenshots of their engine which shows some really awesome landscapes. The entire planet (terrain and textures) are procedurally generate. The engine allows you to create massive high detailed environments to the scale of solar systems, and theoretically galaxies with very little premade assets which means it takes up very little disk space. The link above shows a video and some screenshots of the engine in action.

Here Some history on the project: It started off as a Open world Space MMO simulator called "Infinity: The Quest for Earth" where players could explore a galaxy. Procedural generation would have allowed them to create a full galaxy to scale with unique stars and planets inhabiting it. However the progress on the game was slow so they eventually set it aside so they could focus their attention on developing this engine. My hopes is that they will some day bring the original game back to life when they finish the engine. For the time being, they have announced that next year they will start a crowd sourcing campaign to develop a smaller scale space game. I believe that game will be a space combat simulator set within a solar system.
