Buy another computer and save the bitching for someone who cares.

oh my soec suck anyway. :(

AMD 3000+ (barton)
ATI radeon 9600 pro 256 mb, 128-bit
512 RAM pc3200
180 GB HD 7200 RPM
dvd combo drive 48x24x48x16x
30 GB HD 5200 RPM

If you have been having these problems over a year, it shouldn't be a surprise that it's happening with your HL2 game.

It could be a multitude of problems. If you built it yourself, you should have a general idea of what the performance was like when you played a game on it, for the first time. How was the performance then?

If you are serious about "throwing away" your computer, PM me, I'm more than interested in buying parts off you. Your computer is leaps and bounds better than mine, anyhow.

lol strong graphics... manipulator looks like something out of hl1 :D..glad I have a good pc :)

Btw dont blame valve if its happening to all your games its probably that your pc is made out of mouse droppings.

cool you built your pc with a 3000barton a year ago before it was out..cut the bullshit and tell the truth..because you cant run hl2 on the 266mhz your mum brought you 6 x-mas's ago.

games ran fine for about 8 months and FARCRY was SWEET !!!.

All the sudden it starts to get worse . worse worse , now its unplayable. If I made a video of what it looks like then you guys would want to throw my tower in traffic too.
pfft only games i can really play are cs 1.6, but i still have to wait like 1 minute for the jiddernees to stop.

oh i upgraded the CPU and RAM 2 weeks ago. I only upgraded these because i thought these were my problem .. well i thought wrong.

fair enough, Have you tried defragging and other stuff like that? Also try upgrading your mobo drivers..and install windows again, because sometimes windows sucks and changes stuff that makes your pc suck.

Ive
-defragged 2 weeks ago, for the 4th time.
-Ran 3 anti-virus programs.
-ran ad-aware
-ran spybot search & destroy
-ran PC chillin 2002 twice in ast week
-updated ATI drivers (and tried over 7 different drivers)
-cleaned PC with air can
-last time I re-installed windows was about 9 months ago....hmmm right about when my computer started to get worse.. worse and now unplayable.

Could be an actual hardward problem rather then a software one (you know, as in physically, somethings wrong with one of your components).

I have virtually the exact same specs and most games run fine for me.

Then you know what you have to do...find that installation disk :afro:

can i re-install windows xp home without disrupting any of my game files ?

oh and is there a way i can get my CD-KEY off windows some how cause i stole my aunts and im not going back over there at 4:00 am

sure can...

Go into windows install, when it says there is already an operating system...highlight xp and choose repair install..it replaces all your windows files but your desktop and all that crap stays the same.

i played hl2 with EXACTLY the same specs as you, except my video card is a nine TWO HUNDERED and i managed to get almost everything on high

I don't understand what you're so upset about, the 3000+ barton was released februari or march 2003.

http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030210/index.html

Anyways, let's try solve the problem (in the event that didn't already happen).

Run the stresstest in CS:source.

I'd recommend updating all drivers:mobo,sound,graphics.

Run Hitman pro to get rid of all the spyware and such.

Virus scan after updating.

Defrag your harddrive.

Run the stresstest in CS.

Compare the before/after result.

ok i tried re-installing windows but i got this.

Start>properties>software>SP2 left click it and click remove.

I'd try a complete reformat of your computer rather than just windows and if its still the same in all games then you know there is fault on a piece of hardware because a PC should run as fast as it possibly can after a format.

Try a few things as well like taking the other HDD out and see if the problem persists...take some memory out and swap between them and try each time...if this does'nt work take your computer to a PC specialist if you don't think you can do it and get them to check the hardware on your PC because no games should be running that low on a PC that powerful.

reformatting my computer would be waste of time because the i would have to spend over a month trying get back my files and movies. then i couldnt play hl2 cause of steam. :( I didnt waste 60 bucks to just reformat in a week

That's what I'd do too but he don't wanna do that.

Yet he can burn his save games.

Sorry m8 I got the Dutch version so my "sowtware" is maybe called different but check the image that's what it looks like.

yah I just burn everything I wanna keep than reformat, much easier than just reinstalling windows which will more than likely solve nothing.

um well i have another problem that i kind of put aside for a year to with CD-Drive's ..well no Cd-Drives work in my computer i think its my mobo, cause 4 different drives we tested
-all 4 work on my friends comp and only 1 worked half-way in mine. I still havent found a drive that lets me burn on my comp. :rolling:

So thats the main reason why I dont reformat

If that is the source of the problem then you are screwed. You can't uninstall SP2. Five, six people I know reported their pc got sluggish after installing SP2, with Doom3, Far Cry etc. If this is the problem your best bet is reinstall windows and forget SP2. If you don't already, start getting in the habit of partitioning your disk and install all programs that you don't want to lose on D or E drives. And don't forget to move the "Your Documents" and "Your Images" directories or you will lose those as well when you reinstall (I speak out of personal experience).

That said, have you checked your Steam/HL2 startup options? I had jittery sound for a while and I fixed it by using this:

-heapsize 512000 +cl_smooth 0 +sv_forcepreload 1 +cl_forcepreload 1 +snd_mixahead 0.4 -console

  • -heapsize: per default the game starts with a heapsize of 64000, which is way too small for most systems. Ideally it should be your physical memory divided by 2. I have 1 Gig, so its 512.
  • -console: cuts down on loading times.
The rest I don't know exactly what they do but they make the game run smoother on my computer.

How to get launch options? Go to Steam -> Play games.
Right-click on "Half-life 2" -> Properties -> Launch Options.

Good luck.

I have the exact same settings in my target line and. no. ALL my games have the same exact effect they run really choppy for about 15 minutes then they ALL the sudden in a split second run perfect. well Hl2 just runs horrible on my computer.
mine is a lot worse then the video from that one guy's glitchiness

Well SP2 is awesome but only if its installed with XP, not after the fact. I have an XP disc that has SP2 already on it, it runs 50x better than. And he's not screwed thats a lie, you can uninstall SP2 simply by going to add/remove programs it should be in there.

More and more starts to look like a bios setup problem to me,if the drives don't work correctly and your speed is under par.

What read out you get when you go to START>properties>system ?

Does it tell you you got the 3000+ running at 2,15 Ghz and is theammount of ram correct?

EDIT: it could be drive setup itself too,if the drives aren't setup like master/slave or cable select (includes hard drive(s) too).

Ive talked to some tech guys at memorex hotline . And i knew more about computers then they did. :(

Ive set everything correctly and ive also tried to take out master HD and set my drive total on master by itsself and no matter how i set them ive gotten the same resolts.

OH and i've also been trying to update my BIOS for 1 1/2 years now. There instructions on thier site our useless, and so i've had the same BIOS they say 2002 on them.
:P

Are you running a motherboard that uses the Nvidia nforce2 chipset?

I got mine at about the same time and couldn't burn any cd's for ages. I discovered that it was a problem with the release of the Nvidia IDE SW drivers, that try to improve the performance of your IDE Bus.

One way of telling this is to go into the device manager and check what your HDD's/CD/DVD drives are listed as. If they are down as SCSI devices and you know they are not, then it's a good chance that this is causing your problems.

If you are, recommend going to www.nvidia.com and downloading the latest nforce drivers.

Just in case you're unsure:

Go to the Nvidia website
Click on Download Drivers at the top
select Platform / nForce Drivers in the first menu
Unified Driver in the second
Then Windows XP / 2000 / ME / 98Se in the third.
When I updated these it solved no end of drive related problems.

Best of Luck!

I would put in new drivers for motherboard (you got a SIS748 chip on it),graphics (catalyst 4.11) and check out how it runs.

I will not harm anyways so got nothing to loose.

what drivers ?

i got the newest ones from my mobo site.

do you mean look for SIS748 chipset drivers ?

you could load up windows with windows disk in > boot from disk > fresh install > delete old installation and reinstall windows which will keep everything on C: bar windows folder.
Itll delete my documents aswell and itll will be like you just brought home a new computer...but with all your junk on the C:.

If you do this to access your games/programs you will have to reinstall them or go searching for where you installed them and make a shortcut onto desktop or sommin, and it would be wise to reinstall drivers and crap :)

gpu problem.........

it could be you have a dodgy video card. i had those exact problems at christmas wen i got a new pc.for like a month my games where all jumpy and shit and i had to wait for bout 5 mins before they were even playablel. at first i jus thought it was my shitty cheap gfx card (fx5200) but wen i got that replaced with a new fx5200 i cud run games perfect i cudent before like ut2003 on highest details. and i only had an athlon2600+. try testing a friends video card in ur system to see if it makes any difference

well heres an update on my computer.

Im on my dads dell right now and well i put the windows CD in and enter CD-KEY, and did re-install,but have it keep my files on drive.

Then i began to think DAMN my CD-DRIVES work half the time, "hope it doesnt screw up"

It restarted my comp and began the contdown for instalation at 39 minutes, so i waited for 10 and the time was the same so i said DAMN i ****ed it UP. "DAMN YOU CD-DRIVES".
All the sudden it started to go and at 34 minutes left my screen turned off and on like 6 times and it says "can not complete instalation with windows xp, missing file RadLinker".

I have destroyed my comp . :(
